Car rentals + credit card

Car rentals + credit card - 03/11/2015 03:17 PM

We're renting a car from L&S rentals at Leverick, as well as Dean Whitley on Anegada. Does anyone know if either of them take credit cards?
TWO. MORE. DAYS. TILL. WE. LEAVE! (i'm just a little excited)
Thanks!

Thanks - we are doing the same thing! Do you know how much they charge at each place? I think I read $75 at Leverick. I asked Dean but didn't hear back. We are getting the safari truck.

I believe the truck is $90 per day and takes at least 8..

Thank you! I told them we have 10 (6 are kids though) and they said we would fit.

We always fit 10 adults in the safari truck with no problems.

I was told at a marina 30 years ago that AMEX was the slowest card to pay the merchant and had the highest fees.
It's a wonder they are still in business.

As a former small business owner, when I accepted credit cards AMEX does have the highest fees. Years and years ago, it was great to have an AMEX because they were the only ones offering frequent flier miles tied to purchases. Now, there are so many other cards with much better perks and no annual fees. We haven't used an AMEX card in years. It's no wonder Costco is now partnering with Visa.

Make sure you take the time to look at Hennies' pottery when checking in at DW! She's a wonderful artist.

My group of 8 was going to rent 2 vehicles while in Leverick next week. They actually have a Safari Truck you can rent that seats 8 people? That's awesome if they do.

When my daughters backpack was stolen in Amsterdam with her passport, cc's and Eurorail pass I called my AMEX office here and they had a rep from Amsterdam call me in STT - he sent a car for her, got her a hotel room and got everything replaced in under 24 hrs. It is their International service that keeps them in business - try calling your Visa/MC/Discover/Capitol One rep for that kind of help.

Don’t get me wrong LocalSailor the fact that Amex helped your daughter is fantastic. The issue arises among merchants. Years ago we took Amex and have since discontinued that practice. While fantastic for the card holder not so much for the merchant. We as a business would need to raise our prices to absorb the ridicules discount rates charged by them. Nothing comes without cost.

We rented a safari truck at Leverick from L&S arranged by Nick. It was $70 for 24 hours. We were 8 adults, 2 in the cab 6 in the bed. We could have easily fit more people in the bed. I paid with a VIsa Credit Card, ez Pz.

It helps to have person riding shotgun to remind you to stay left and point out speed bumps and dips. If you see a few cars on your six, pull to the side when possible and flag them to pass you if it's clear ahead.

Cheers,

Tony

Re kids in a Safari - make sure they are told to stay seated - I've seen kids almost get bounced out of those.

I have had mixed success with AMEX cards in the BVI. I don't recall ever using AMEX to rent a car in Tortola except with the major chains at the airport. Typically I use Jerry and he does not take AMEX but he takes my VISA every time. Dean in Anegada doesn't accept AMEX but other cards are OK. Don't remember what I have charged in Virgin Gorda, but some kind of card is OK. Still, I never travel without AMEX. The airlines take it for tickets and in-flight charges and whatever else. Native Son ferry uses AMEX for the boat ride. Pusser's West End, Sugar Mill, and Rhymer's in CGB all accept AMEX. Bobby's Market accepts VISA but not AMEX, same for Red Rock restaurant and Bananakeet, just off the top of my head. Most merchants I know hate AMEX.

Trying to find related thread about what is best to use while in BVI cash, credit cards or debit cards. Help please! Can't remember what we did while there in 2006. Four more weeks until sunshine, relaxation and painkillers!

Re: Car rentals + credit card - 03/14/2015 03:35 PM

Many disagree, but we never use debit cards, except to changing foreign currency at ATMs, which is a non issue in BVI. We are all about Capital One and the mileage, 90% CC 10% cash for incidentals. .

Tortola is one of the few places on this planet - where I prefer a rental to come "the more scratched up the better"
Makes for far less stress when handing the car back.
... and it ain't "my" (lack) of driving skills that makes me say that...LOL
...although - there IS something to be said for that also....
...gotta luv this place...otherwise...whew, you're in trouble
