Kevin Campbell again

Kevin Campbell again - 06/15/2015 09:30 PM

I just can't say enough about this fella. Our kids flight was delayed till 4:15 (spirit). the last ferry out was 430 from C&I or 515 from RH. Apparently Kevin called up the company and had the ferry held for 15 minutes so my kids made it on to meet us at the FMP in Trellis. This also saved us and them of them having to overnight in STT.

Later in the trip, Linda and I were walking along side the road and Kevin noticed us and picked us up. Even remembered the type of bags we had at storage at the ferry dock.

Unfortunately, Kevin has never read this forum. I let him know if he ever has a bad day, he should log into the site.

I used him on my last trip and told him about this site as well. He is a great resource to have and know. Honest, trustworthy etc. Having just purchased a boat in Tortola I will be using him every trip along with any of my guests. Pay it forward.

I texted him this morning to be picked up next week and he responded within the hour. Always use Kevin in STT and AC in RT - down in 7.

We are taking some new-to-sailing friends with us in November and I was explaining how we get to the boat etc. told them I'd have "our guy Kevin" meet us at the airport. They said "wait - you've 'got a guy' ? Well .....yeah kinda......

Thanks so much for the recommendation! I just texted him re: our trip in 10 days and he texted back immediately. One more thing off my checklist smile

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 02:45 PM

I ended up randomly riding with Kevin on the trip from the ferry at CA to the airport on Sunday. I asked if he was the "famous Kevin" on TTOL and he smiled and passed me his card. In discussions with him, it is clear the "extra" benefit he can provide is getting you to your destination if/when things go wrong. Kind of like local trip insurance.
I will use him every time in the future. He indicated the best way to pre-coordinate with him is through text messages.

I'm sure you tipped him well for his service.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 03:45 PM

We paid him twice what he asked for for each of our three trips.the kids did the same for each of their two trips.

Worth every penny given he saved the kids an overnight @STT

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 06:23 PM

yes, he even tracked down a buddy of mines bag (Polar Bear Cooler ) that was "lost" and delivered it to Red Hook to Make the west end ferry so they could pick it in sopers....what service when you need it most.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 06:40 PM

We had same experience with him. We had complicated travel plans with different couples departing at different times and he made it all work and was able to also hold spots on Roadtown ferry for us on our going trip. Great guy! Enough cannot be said about him.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 08:51 PM

Held up the ferry? Grrrr..... One of the best decisions ever made in the USVI was to enforce the ferry departure times. The net effect of ferries not running on their published schedules is overwhelmingly negative.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 09:11 PM

"Enforce the ferry departure times????" When the hell did that happen????????
Posted By: sail2wind

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 09:42 PM

seriously, never heard that one
Posted By: theKurp

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 10:11 PM

The ferries in the USVI never ran on time. The practice became so pervasive that locals never showed up at the scheduled times to catch the ferry because they expected it to run late. Same was true of the movie theaters. Finally someone had the good sense to put a stop to it. Ferries in the USVI generally run on time now.

BVI? It's a joke - and an embarrassing one at that for them.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/16/2015 11:23 PM

I disagree, the Red Hook - St. John runs like clockwork. I don't know how you know the locals don't show up on time? And........ who put a stop to what?

I lived in St. Thomas for 20 years. I was there when the ferries never ran on time, and I was there when the decision was made to adhere to the published schedules. Who made the decision? Who cares? It was made.

The ferries from CA to Cruz Bay are occasionally off schedule.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/17/2015 02:41 PM

The fact that one "for hire" guy can influence ferry schedules is symptomatic of one of the most significant ills facing the V.I.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 06/17/2015 03:32 PM

I hope that my "tips" are in return for a service provided. Which is different than paying extra for preferential treatment at the expense of others who are also paying for the same service.

Kevin HAS made disasters minor inconveniences. This guy is tops and goes beyond doing his job. Sometimes tips are just not enough.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/03/2015 10:32 PM

Kevin has saved my [censored] more than once since '07, and those of guests that have come down over the years. It's not about calling to see if a ferry can be held for a few minutes(btw, not something he invented)so that 6-10 people that were delayed due to airline/airport can get there (doing the math at $60-70/pp, the ferry company is usually willing to wait) but it's about a guy that loves people, and is a great salesman for his home. It's about having a friend you can contact that will hook you up with the right people and places, either on St Thomas or in the BVI. Other than his father, I've not had another cab driver that will do ANYTHING remotely close to what Kevin does. theKurp, I so understand your POV, having sat on the 1000 from RT til 1040 on 01 Jul, whatever the reason was...RTFF was broken as was another one, BUT, there was Kevin on the other end reassuring me via texts that he would make sure I'd make my early flight despite the ferry bs. Got me there yet again! RickinAtlanta, that's what pisses me off most about the ferry being held...another beer!! Kevin is all that! One love brother, and I'll see you Monday!

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/06/2015 06:24 PM

Not sure if I ever met Kevin but it seems anyone who is remotely honest and helpful could make a fortune hauling people from the airport to the ferry terminal for $145 each way!!!!!! in a van worth about $2k... really! Seems most of the guys like to stand around and touch your bag for two seconds and ask for money... the classic line "I take care of your bags, you take care of me... he carry's drags them 3 feet and goes to the next guy for a tip.

Personally, I love the guy who wears the "KILLIN IT" hat..

I seem to shed more money from STT to the base in RT than anywhere else LOL

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/07/2015 12:26 AM

145.00 ?? ya got to kidding. You're not going to meet Kevin at the Taxi stand. 40.00 with a generous tip from STT to the ferry is the most we've paid. And you don't wait for the cattle car to fill.

Nice one

But yes... at the ferry stand they charge $9pp to the ferry terminal +$3per small bag and $6per large bag. They wait till they fill the van and dispatch it. So yes, they make between $120 and $160 each way.

So You are saying Kevin is different and his base rate even for 10 adults is $40.00 total ($4 per person including bags) to the Ferry sttn? Saying it this way is actually helpful information to the forum.
Posted By: mayjong1

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/07/2015 07:54 PM

curious about this too. I am only traveling with 2 total, would kevin still charge me $40?
this would be worth it for me, but wouldn't be worth it if the cost is more than that...
what are your experiences?
Posted By: GlennA

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/07/2015 08:00 PM

I don't believe kevin charges any more per head than the airport taxi association. Independent drivers can't solicit business inside the airport area. Kevin is not a member of the association so he can only do airport pickups by pre-aranged call. The difference is his service is so much more personal.
Posted By: AndyPIT

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/07/2015 08:06 PM

Thanks for clarifying Glenn! Also, have you ever finished Rutu? Sorry if you covered this somewhere in that past 10 years... I see someone else has that domain now.
Posted By: CottageGirl

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/08/2015 01:18 PM

Mayjong1 - he charges $40 for 2. He meets us Inside at baggage claim and whisks us into a car. He's actually never driven us - I think he gets busy maybe and subs out to other drivers? It's just great to have it all prearranged and not be scrunched in with a bunch of other folks.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/08/2015 02:21 PM

How about some factual info, what a concept Kevin picked Belinda and I up from the airport yesterday along with our 3 bags and only asked for $20 TOTAL! No one in his van but us. We're using him now and forever! Besides he's a great guy.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/10/2015 12:37 PM

Just used Kevin this week. I highly recommend using his service. Friendly, honest and on-time.

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/10/2015 03:20 PM

We have ridden with Kevin many times..I dont book him because I dont want to tie him up with just two of us..but he always greets us like old friends and charges $10 per head..no bag charge..very fair and great to see that smiling face. We have used him for newbie guests arriving and they have all raved about his service..
Posted By: RickinAtlanta

Re: Kevin Campbell again - 07/10/2015 08:00 PM

Kevin had absolutely no problem with picking just the two of us up as I had texted him weeks prior. His total time with us was less than 20 minutes so he has no concerns. Please DO "book him" as he is a great guy and has ample resources to take care of all travelers no matter the size of the party.
