Tell me about the north sound .....

Tell me about the north sound ..... - 10/16/2015 02:09 PM

We'll be on a cat next month for a week and we're starting to think about an itinerary. Last spring we stayed in a slip at Leverick one night, rented a car, did the baths, hog heaven and snorkeled Savannah bay. This trip we have 3 newbies who are prob not that into snorkeling and more about the restaurants and beach bars. We definitely want to stay one night at Leverick getting there early enough in the day to explore the north sound for the afternoon/evening. We leave Road Town on a thurs and hope to make Cooper our first stop. That would put us at Leverick on a Friday.
So.....what ideas/suggestions are there for an afternoon and evening in the north sound?

Saba Rock has a good Happy Hour and they feed the Tarpon at 5pm. And you can around to the backside and just chill in the chairs overlooking the reef.

I agree Saba Rock is a fun place to spend some time we also like to dingy over to Prickly Pear to get a couple of drinks. The North Sound is just a nice place to go we usually spend two days there

Nick might jump in with the schedule at Leverick but if they have started the Friday Pig roast with Jumbie dancers that should provide plenty to do!

Definitely do the pig roast and enjoy the Jumby Dancers (reggae dancers on stilts) great fun and photo op.

You should include the Fat Virgin at Biras Creek. Great lunch or dinner and not a bad dinghy ride if you have a good dinghy. I understand the walks at Biras are still available and always worth doing. Say hello to Ester while you are there and don't forget the gift shop.

So maybe we hit Fat Virgin first for lunch on a mooring ball, then grab our slip at Leverick and dingy around to Saba Rock, Prickly Pear for cocktails and back to Leverick for the BBQ and jumbies. Any reason to stop at BEYC? Good bar and/or atmosphere?

BEYC has a nice new beach bar - we stopped there on our dinghy run last year. Check on whether or no Prickly Pear is open as I don't think they are on a daily basis - not sure. Nick will know.

Saba has a free Ferry that will pick you up and bring you back to Leverick.

An alternative is a slip at Saba Rock, perhaps with a room for the night (check out the Sailor's Rates). Then you have all of the North Sound available by the ferry- Bitter End, Gun Creek, Leverick, Prickly Pear... Nothing like hot showers and air conditioning after some gnarly sailing. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" /> Also, the views from the garden at night are wonderful.

Never sure whether Prickly Pear is open then or not, and I have no number to contact them I am afraid

One night at Leverick is not enough for "foodies". I believe George is still chef at the Upstairs Restaurant at Leverick and he does a super job. Hog Heaven is a must and one of the best restaurants in the BVI is Coco Maya (IMHO). Saba is fun but I have been mildly disappointed the past few years.

Damn! Once again we are at Leverick a week too early. Either way, Leverick is a MUST stop for us.

Hey Nick, what time does the bbq and jumbie party start?
Is there a non-pork option on the buffet?
Do we need reservations? (I'll email you shortly to make our slip reservation)

Nick knows better than me, but I have been to the barbacue so many times that I can certainly say that there are a number of other entre offerings. It's a pretty expansive buffet.
As to your original question, there are lots to of great options if you want to either dingy or move your boat down to either Saba or Bitter End for the day and return to the dock at Leverick at night.
At that end of the sound, you have Saba, Bitter End - both have great bars. Biras is temporarily closed (we hope) and Fat Virgin is a great stop. I am also told that the mega yacht marina is a very friendly stop, well worth the effort.
Th best restaurant in North Sound is right at Leverick. The upstairs restaurant never disappoints.

I'm sure Nick will come back with the correct date, I'm guessing Nov. 13th, as the BBQ is always on a Friday.

The buffet is delicious, besides pork you will find chicken and fish. There are many different salads and desert too.

Our favorite Buffet!

You can just radio them and they'll come get you.

No, you can hail them on the VHF or have the Leverick dock guys do it for you.
