Not boring food.. - 01/08/2016 07:34 PM

..living most of the year down here you can really get tired of the same old..bar b q..jerk..fried chicken etc. Just had lunch at " Islands" at "The Sugar Mill" and dined on this..a toasted sandwich with melted brie, bacon and cranberry sauce..on home made bread..DEELISH!

For the same reason the Wonky Dog was so welcome. Thanks for the heads up. Only problem is it is a little hard to dingy, anchor to. We tend to at least go to Scaramouche in Sopers, Leverick upstairs, or the Dove and transiting through Village Cay once or twice on our trips.

as a treat we will grab a taxi up to Bananakeet.

Any takers on suggestions that are not ...etc...bbq...grill fish...fried...burger...steak...:island stuff. that are anchorage/slip/mooring friendly?

Brandywine? Good holding for anchoring. Very calm on the couple of occasions I've stayed there. Needs to be settled weather although the entrance is not difficult to negotiate. Road noise not too intrusive.

Haven't been there for a while so maybe someone has more recent info?

Big vote for Brandywine..different from the Davide days but delicious and inventive..terrific Sunday brunch with all lunch and dinner entrees plus roast beef , Yorkshire pudding and roasties for us Brits!

Mal, if your goal is 'not boring food', then there are so MANY great local places...albeit a bit 'hole-in-the-wall-ish'. But you've got the time and the resources, the local connections, and the patience to explore them. I really think that you should dive more deeply into the local joints.

If what you're saying is that there are a limited amount of restaurants where you can look out onto the ocean, be served a nice bottle of wine, and sit in comfortable chairs...well then yes. After about a month...boring as hell.

...and IMHO the Davide days of Brandywine couldn't have been more pretentious and tedious.

I have been to Scaramouche a few times recently and their foods are hardly boring. Had a hardly boring and most tasteful, stomach <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/dine.gif" alt="" /> filling meal last night. If, anything, the plates can be complicated in composition of tastes and textures..jollylou

Interesting observations and comments..I loved Davide and Cele's "Brandywine"..never felt it was "pretentious" just welcoming and with a couple trying to provide an excellent dining experience which they did. I have tried many or most of the local places and like a few of them, but, like I said I get bored with bar b q, fried fish, chicken etc that many love to serve..I dont love conch..I do love good rotis..I love patties and find few "local" places ever making them..but Gene in Carrot Bay has filled that need for me with a terrific patty..also made me a great shepherd's pie tonight..I know none of this would make Atlanta Rick happy but he now has VG to explore for his favorite cuisine..

Wow … My wife and I first met Davide at Brandywine, when he came out of the kitchen and introduced himself to us. We loved the restaurant and the personal attention of the owner/chef. We later dined at Scrub with our crew, and again Davide came to our table to help decant a bottle of wine and discuss the menu with our crew. We recently joined Davide & Cele at their home on Scrub (Wali Nikiti) where both were excellent hosts.

Can anyone update me on the status of Palm Delight. Heard it closed but niece (Jean?) of de coal pot was going to get it going again?...

Re: Not boring food.. - 01/11/2016 03:04 PM

I very much enjoy the new Brandywine and find the chef to be very accommodating. I was never a fan of the original as on my first visit (many years ago), I was made to feel very déclassé because I like my steak pink in the center ... not bloody. I was told the chef would not serve it that way and it was suggested by the server that I choose something else.

The only other items on the menu that night were fish or lamb. I don't eat either, so I opted not to eat while my friend did and she enjoyed her meal immensely.

Davide was very polite when he came out to explain how "overcooking" a filet minon ruins the meat ... but I disagree and believe personal preferences are rather important in any restaurant setting. If the chef is that inflexible, I have no interest in returning.

I really love Davide's other restaurant Capriccio's .. so there you go. In fact my family are here visiting from Toronto and we will most definitely be going to Capriccio's at least once or twice over the next 10 days. They all love the food there.

Chef Bourdon at the new Brandywine prepared a steak for me (which was exactly as I like it) and I enjoyed the meal with my whole family very, very much. We all did.

Yes sadly, Palm's Delight is closed as Iona and Sonny are both retiring.

Evelyn who owns D' Coal Pot (currently located at the bottom of Zion Hill Road) will be taking over that space but will be completely rebuilding as the existing building is well past it's prime.

Evelyn is married to Iona's son and they hope to be moved by June or July this year.

One other plus for "Gene's" (Not Jean's) in Carrot Bay is that she is open on Mondays all day when many places close and closes Tuesdays when everyone else is open..not only a beautiful cook but also a smart business lady!

While on the subject of dining, what became of Jeremy Wright's place on Trellis? Last I heard, his brother was about to reopen it as Jeremy's Kitchen.

Jeremy's place still looked closed yesterday.
