New Eats--Tortola

New Eats--Tortola - 01/10/2016 04:53 PM

OMG, I've been away for less than a year -back FEB.10 for a month--and there have been so many changes. Da Coal Pot closes (I think) and the chef/owner "takes over" Palms Delight. Jean, THANK GOD, reopens on Carrot Bay. Giorgio opens a new restaurant in the old Roti Palace. (Is Karen their mixologist? ). The Sugar Mill has reopened their restaurant to great reviews (long overdue). The Clubhouse has closed. Has it reopened in a new life? The Dove is reborn after Scott and Paloma moved on to an exciting adventure to Peter Island. I would love to hear any other changes and certainly would appreciate some input on all these venues. Looking forward to a gastronomic month starting with Chef George Sears at the Upstairs at Leverick, Coco Maya for Valentines Day and Hog Heaven whenever we need a pork or conch fix. Over to Tortola after the 14th of Feb. Hope to see many joining us. Now back to my diet...

Seems " The Clubhouse" has hobbled along without the amazing Paul Mason and plans are to bring in a new chef..not prepared to try it yet.Likewise" The Dove"is getting "mixed" reviews since Paloma and Scott left..feel that same way. Gene is rocking in Carrot Bay thank goodness, for lunch and dinner and breakfast if she is there. The NEW " Sugar Mill" never ceases to amaze, especially the dinner menu..just great..whole new atmosphere..attitude and food....and "YES" that have all the correct glasses now for cocktails and wine. Dennis, the owner has brought in five containers full of stuff!! We are not "Da Coal Pot" fans though many love the place and I'll let them chime in.Have not been to " Bananakeet" yet but we heard changes were afoot after Chris' tragic passing..dont really see that as good news." Brandywine" is still great at that end of the island..love their Sunday lunch of roast beef and Yorkshire pud.The rest of the eateries are all about the same..some have fans..some not..

Yup ... lots of changes afoot!

Paul from the Clubhouse is now the new Food and Beverage Manager for Pusser's while his wife Cindy has taken over the management position at Marina Cay. Lots of improvements coming relatively soon ... hopefully.

The folks who own Island Roots Cafe in Road Town have taken over at The Clubhouse Restaurant (now called Safran) at Frenchman's Cay.

I had breakfast and lunch at Safran yesterday with my whole family and everything was very good. The owners were thrown into this situation as very last minute replacements for Paul and his staff ... but they have no staff to speak of. One of the owners is attempting to be the server and that's definitely not his forte, though he is trying very hard.

They are still finding their feet, resulting in rather discombobulated service ... to say the least, but I have faith that they will manage to get themselves organized soon. The saving grace is that the food (what I have sampled so far) is pretty good!

We ate at Sugarmill in Nov (2015) and it was amazing!
Also ate at Bananakeet - food was really good and the view is to die for.
