Bushwhacker shortage!

Bushwhacker shortage! - 04/01/2016 11:56 PM

Just kidding ....sort of.
Dinner tonight at Scrub Island (staying here 2 night's pre charter).
Ordered a Bushwhacker for dessert only to be told "we're out of the ingredients for those" Wow. Last night they're out of shrimp.
Loving the rooms - food not so much.

Wow is right, looks like they are not paying attention.

When we were there around New Year's they couldn't make a mojito. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />
Going back to Marina Cay next time, it's gotten kind of pitiful.

Paul Mason, ex of The Clubhouse, has taken over a major part of running "Pussers" and his wife Cindy is managing Marina Cay now..looking forward to checking it out but I hear things are a lot better..and I'm sure she can rustle up a killer Mojito!

This is great news....have never been a scrub fan....I can go to Palm Springs for that <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Laugh.gif" alt="" />

Yup let's stop at Marina Cay after Anegada maybe....didn't get to snorkel Diamond reef this time so looking forward to it in June

Re: Bushwhacker shortage! - 04/02/2016 02:01 PM

That's great to hear, will definitely head to Marina Cay!

Bridget, if a Palm Springs establishment was run like Scrub, it wouldn't last a month! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Yikes.gif" alt="" /> After 5 years it's just a few steps further along than that Trump resort in Baja that never quite made it! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Tonguea.gif" alt="" />

I do hope that their new round of funding came with a better management team- but if not I suppose it will eventually sell cheaply enough for someone to get it right! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

Actually, Scrub was not the only place with a Mojito shortage. When we were there in late February there was a major mint shortage. Mojitos are normally our go to for onboard happy hour, but this trip there was no mint to be bought at any store in Road Town! We tried to order Mojitos at Peter Is., Marina Cay, and Saba Rock, but no one could make them. No solution until reaching Cow Wreck, where Bell sold us some mint from her herb garden. It was a different mint than I'm used to, more of an Asian style, small leaf with a basil flavor, but our onboard bar was functional again, at least for a couple of nights. Another problem solved by a trip to Cow Wreck!

Scrub hasn't been the same since they let Martin go.

Oh for crying out loud... Mint is a WEED & will grow uncontrollably pretty much anywhere! No excuse for that!

I should clarify- Scrub DID make me something with mint syrup quite akin to Scope in color & flavor, but it was so utterly gross no one could consider actually consuming it.

For an investment of less than $10 all of those places could have sold hundreds of dollars worth of mojitos! Sigh. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

Mint syrup DOES NOT count. Muddled or spanked, good mint makes the mojito!

I know! And it was gross!

I'm allergic to bushwhackers so I'm not sure what else goes into them but it certainly seems that running out of ingredients to make the most common drinks & cocktails is the poorest of bar management.

I couldn't get a Pimm's Cup last time we were in Bermuda, either- after the Dark n Stormy it's about the most popular drink in the country- how does a manager let this happen? <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

It was coco Lopez they were out of. I mean really?
Best deal at scrub is a big sausage egg and cheese sandwich on a croissant from the deli - for $8

Ok now that's completely ridiculous. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/titanic.gif" alt="" />

While I'm not defending Scrub, or any other establishment that "ran" out of something, you have to consider that it might be the purveyor's fault.

Years ago I was managing a well-known beach bar in the BVI, and one of my evening employees worked days at TICO. They told me to buy all the Coco Lopez I could, as there would soon be an island-wide shortage. So I cleaned out the shelves in my local RiteWay, and was able to continue making pina coladas, etc, while everyone couldn't.

Another time, over Christmas and New Year's, there was no heavy cream available for three weeks. I never understood that, as it was imported to the island by three different purveyors, and two of them got containers twice a week. Pretty hard to make an alfredo sauce without heavy cream.

The worst for me was when there was no dry cat food on island for several months. My cat was really pissed.

Or, perhaps Scrub is just inept at ordering.

Re: Bushwhacker shortage! - 04/03/2016 08:56 PM

Yes, getting supplies onto any island has a whole other level of challenges attached to it. HOWEVER, the shelf life on that stuff is at least a year, and while a restaurant certainly can't afford to keep TOO much back stock on hand, knowing that the challenges might be there I think I'd have at least a couple extra weeks' worth on hand.

I'm assuming that paying retail for it & ordering it for delivery to STT isn't possible due to some kind of regulations or customs BS.

Even if we give them a pass on the bushwhackers, not having MINT for mojitos? Nope, no pass given on that one. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

Only herbs I've ever seen grown locally (and sold in the stores) are basil and thyme. Aragorn might have mint, but your mojito would cost a LOT more. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />

IMLTHO (in my less than humble opinion) <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" />, any bar with any outdoor space whatsoever is just stupid to not grow mint! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> It's literally an invasive weed that needs little water, doesn't get bugs, & is even happy in a big pot! Why pay for something you can get for nothing? <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Yikes.gif" alt="" />

How much??
Posted By: CottageGirl

Re: Bushwhacker shortage! - 04/05/2016 01:33 PM

2 drinks, 2 bottles of water and 1 quesadilla $34
Posted By: SuburbanDharma

Re: Bushwhacker shortage! - 04/05/2016 01:44 PM

So maybe 10 or 12 bucks for the quesadilla, 4 apiece for the water, and 7 or 8 each for drinks. Pretty average, which is actually surprising to me. I paid $22 for a daiquiri & a beer at another island earlier this season & while I'm ok with paying more for excellence, this caught me a bit off guard!

Re: Bushwhacker shortage! - 04/05/2016 04:17 PM

Sounds reasonable to me..I am getting a little miffed at the prices some places are charging..what happened to the good ol fashioned beach bar with cheap ice cold beer and burgers ( Thanks God for Tony's/Stanley's)..someone on CGB will wise up and drop prices to $3 a beer and clean up...naaaah
