Private Water Taxi

Private Water Taxi - 08/17/2016 10:04 PM

I think I hijacked a prior post so apologies for that.
Are the private water taxis again allowed to deliver passengers to their final destination? On our last trip, they were unable to proceed past West End, so our party of 12 had to taxi once on Tortola. Has this changed? I hope so....

This was February of 2015 so I'm not sure what current rates are but if I remember correctly, there was a minimum charge for the boat and a fuel surcharge. We had 10 on board, 2 joined us later, and I think it was around 120 per person. Since our base was west of Roadtown, and our planes arrives in STT after the last ferries, I felt this was our best option. It's a LONG cab ride from EIS to Nanny Cay. And they accomodated our schedule for the return back to STT

Foxy's Water Taxi can take you wherever you want to go !!!

We used them to go from STT, check-in at Soper's and then take us on to Sea Cow Bay.

Bvi water taxis can take you beyond west end. Usvi water taxis cannot. At least that's what I understand.

So what's up with the $40/pp "international processing charge" on Foxy's?

They have to pay for the new gas engine and sail drive they are installing on the boat.

Some of the USVI companies are licensed to take you beyond West End. We used Dolphin in April to pick-up a group from Peter Island and drop off our next batch of guests at Scrub Island. I think Ocean Dreams was also licensed when I was looking for companies. Most of the other USVI based companies were not licensed when I checked in March.

ALL of the water taxi companies charge a per person fee for customs processing, not just Foxy's. I've heard many "opinions" on what this money is used for, but the bottom line is, it doesn't really matter much if you value the convenience of a water taxi's services.

So the real question you need to ask is: "Will $40/pp break me?"

The question was not if the "$40/pp will break me?" it was what is it actually for?

Here's a link to a very good explanation from Dolphin Water Taxi:

So the actual fee for BVI departing visitors varies by day of week, time of day. Figures.
