Planning Day Trip to Jost via Ferry from STJ

Planning Day Trip to Jost via Ferry from STJ - 09/18/2016 01:35 AM

Hi Everyone,
First some background: we usually visit St John during the New England schools April break. This year we opted for something different and booked our first bareboat charter out of Tortola. We had a great experience but I still arrived back home wanting to get back to St. John. A few months later, I got wind that a college aged girl in our neighborhood was watching another local teen for an extended period. I reached out to her to see if she would be willing to watch our two for a week and she said she was! I told my very understanding hubby to block his calendar for the last week in September because we were heading back to St. John!
What does this have to do with the BVI's? Well, after that nice long story I told you about wanting so desperately to get back to St John, once I had my week booked, I started thinking about booking a day trip to the BVI's. We had always booked private charters from St John which made sense for 4 of us. However this trip we were doing things off season and inexpensively. So the $$$ for a private charter for 2 just didn't add up. We think we'll try the ferry from St John for a day trip to Jost this time. We've been to White Bay before on charters, but nowhere else, and never by ferry. What do you recommend for an itinerary for the day? We usually have lunch at One Love but are willing to try somewhere different. Any suggestions for an itinerary based around ferry times that would factor in a good lunch spot would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

PS: For those of you that remember my comments about Pink Floyd in my last trip report, I can assure you that I since have downloaded the songs on my phone and play them whenever I'm looking to channel that afternoon in North Sound. Good times...

We really emjoyed Hendo's Hideout -- but if you are going down the last week of September, it might not be a bad idea to check on who is open....lots of places are closed this time of year. Soggy is open.

Are you wanting to only be on White Bay for the day, or interested in checking out other parts of the island? Do you want to be there when it's busy, or quiet? If I were in your situation, I'd go to White Bay when I got to JVD, and enjoy it while it's quiet. Around lunchtime, pack up and head to Foxy's Taboo on the east end of the island for lunch. From there you could catch a dinghy ride to B-Line for the afternoon, or go to the Bubbly Pool. Then taxi back to Great Harbor for a walk around, if you have time. From there you can walk back to the ferry dock to head back to STJ. That's about a 3-day itinerary for me when I'm on Jost, but it's doable in one day, too smile

@ Felix,
We don't need to spend the day on White Bay and are open to exploring other areas. We've heard of the B-Line but know it's accessible by boat only. Where can we catch or rent a dinghy from in order to visit it? We haven't been to Foxy's yet either so that's probably a good stop for us as well.

Thanks for the tips!

If you ask at the bar at Taboo (edited to add: AFTER having lunch or at least a few drinks there), they'll call whoever's working at B-Line and they can usually come pick you up at the dock (and take you back, of course). They might charge $5 a person for this, or they might not, depends on what day it is I guess wink

Have fun!

Thanks Felix! Perhaps we will have lunch AND a few drinks before asking for a call to the B-Line.

Just make sure you check the ferry times.. they vary from day to day.. so some days (sundays) you get longer as the return ferry isn't until 5:30...

I"m partial, but I vote on going and checking out the eastern end of the island by taboo.. I've lived on JVD for several years but am always taken away by the beauty there..

The East End of Jost is the bomb-diggity! (Although I may be a little jaded! ) Lunch at Foxy's Taboo and afternoon games at B-Line is a great way to spend the day.

If you rent a dinghy you can also get out to Sandy Spit and Sandy Cay in the same afternoon.
