Music and Carry-on

Music and Carry-on - 03/16/2017 03:37 PM

We have our first bareboat trip scheduled for July.
I have a couple of unanswered questions and was looking for a little help.

Music:
I don't own music on I-tunes etc. Normally I play Pandora on my boat, in the house etc.
What are my options in the BVI?
Our boat(Marinemax 484 PC) is supposed to have free WIFI included.

Cary-on Luggage/Food?
We are trying to do carry on only. We had planned to bring a small cooler with some vacuum sealed steaks and fish. Can you bring the cooler of food as carry on?

Thanks in advance!

If you have wifi than Pandora or spotify will work. Boats have FM radios, some have sirus radio.

Food should be checked. Ice and ice packs fall under 3oz fluids from my experiences.

Pandora is not allowed in the BVI...Unless you have good VPN, such as Surfeasy. It will mask your digital address to look as if you are in the US. Pandora will then work like it does at home using your boats wifi. Not sure about a cooler. Food there is awesome. Have a great trip!

If you have a spotify premium account you can "download" music to your device temporarily, therefore not needing access to a network. We will make massive playlists and be able listen without using data.

We were there 2 weeks ago (MM also) and used Spotify - You can get a free premium account for 30 days and download songs to your device which allows you to play them without wifi or data. On Board we connected our iPad to the stereo via a usb/lightning cable. Worked well. As others have indicated Pandora won't work. The digicell wifi works well (except Norman island). We vacuum sealed meat and packed it in a RTIC soft cooler (checked bag) - had to pay $10 duty on entry into Tortola. Our food stayed frozen solid so you may be able to bring as carryon without ice if you have a good cooler.

You can carry on a small cooler. What I do that works fine for up to 48 hours is vacuum seal the meat which is optional and then pack it tightly into a small cooler. I put the entire cooler in my freezer with the lid open and freeze it solid. When we pull it out to leave I fill any unused space with crumpled newspaper. Once past airport security I tape the lid shut to assure no air leaks.

I use Pandora through a VPN. I select a US-based VPN connection and Pandora, and other region restricted apps, work.

We used to bring coolers, but a lot of the time we just pack vacuum packed meats in our carryon. We arrive St. Thomas via connection with frozen food.

If you have Amazon Prime you can use that to download free playlists too.

Bring whatever you want as yes you can get steaks/fish in the BVI's but you never know what/when/where. Those who can't cook simply do to restaurants. Those of us who love to cook bring what we want. I do both, cook some nights go to some great restaurants others

This topic comes up all the time and the answer is each to their own. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/dine.gif" alt="" />

As others have said, Pandora doesn't work in the BVI's. We've always made playlists from downloaded music.
From what I've read in the news recently, Pandora is releasing a new "premium" subscription soon that will work like Spotify in that you can download music to listen to off-line. Might be released before your trip if you want to stick with Pandora.
