Tortola dining..

Boy..we have lost Scaramouche..The Clubhouse ( with Paul as owner)..Palm's Delight..Coco Plum's and Gene's has moved to the other side of the island. We still have Bananakeet which has managed to keep up the high standard in food set by the late, much beloved Chris..sadly service can be beyond slow. Thank goodness The Sugar Mill has become a terrific dining experience with a major overhaul and cleanup courtesy of Mary and Dennis. D Coal Pot is moving to the old "Palm's Delight" location in a new building..we are hoping for a pleasant surprise there ( many love the old D Coal Pot..we were not so charmed).Sebastian's has upped their dinner game..and their prices.. Off to Omar's D Best Cup for a late breakfast that is always great..

Sad to lose Scaramouche. I really enjoyed their food.

You didn't always have to "luv" the food... but the "fun" was always there...

You haven't lived if you didn't do dinner at Mrs Scatliffe's house...with the whole family watching.

On JVD I like Alibabas. Tortola, I agree withMal on Gene's and actually Myett's does a pretty fair Roti too.

Our favorite was the Fat Virgin. Gene would call on the radio and then pick them up. Great leftovers the next day. Must have called them one year 3 nights in a row. Bad weather but good husband. I wish I knew how to make them.

I thought I saw that D'Coal Pot was serving Ginger Wine Chicken and making it like Palm Delight did.

Going 1st week of August. Remember D Coal Pot from a few years ago across from ball field. Anyone know if they'll be open in August & where?

I tried one sample of D Coal Pot's version of ginger wine chicken and it did not make the grade ( being kind). Hoping in the new locale with Iona right across the street they might get it right..As for rotis I agree that Myett's is good and Sebastian's surprisingly so but usually too much casing and too little stuffing..

Walkers recipe for ginger wine chicken is pretty spot on from what I remember....my one attempt at recreating was in 6ft seas aboard Jeannius going down island, probably wasn't the best time to saute chicken, thank god for gimbled stoves <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Cheers.gif" alt="" />

I never had the opportunity - but I understand, it was always memorable, and came with live entertainment, and the menu consisted of whatever was cooking that day...
But - that was in the early 90's... no idea when that ended

Walker's recipe is 100% correct..came via Cuz Robin from the great Warren Mc Kenna who created the dish at " Skyworld" back in the 80's where Iona was the chef. When he sold ":Skyworld"..that has suffered ever since..Iona opened " Palm's Delight" and. with Rev Warrens's blessing recreated Ginger Wine Chicken. Warren gave Robin the recipe. Walker and Nancy came to Sonoma and cooked it for all of us..great times,great friends and great memories..much love Warren Mc Kenna..

It does take some practice to get it right. You have to be careful not to burn the flour bits left from the chicken, reduce the ginger wine correctly and carefully simmer once the cream is added or the sauce will not thicken properly.

A lot of the time on the boat, we couldn't find cream and just reduced extra ginger wine. We liked it both ways.

RIGHT. The d'Coal Pot folks are relatives of the old Palms Delight owner. They promised not to do the Ginger Wine Chicken until Palms Delight closed. Now that it is closed it is on D' Coal Pot menu. At least that is what I was told at the restaurant in March when I had it and it was very good. Needs some work but coming along.

Shell Museum can be a fun and interesting food experience. Rhymer's breakfast is the best and a Malcolm Double Dog at Tony"s is a staple for lunch. Their salmon sandwich rocks too. Had a few nice dishes from the new local chef at Paradise. Rivals Myett's cracked conch. (Myett's cracked conch may be best I ever had ANYWHERE) #1 on the North Shore is Sugar Mill (from someone who wrote a terrible review about three years ago) Bravo Dennis and Mary for saving an icon.

Yes yes yes! Now I don't go to Tortola for the fine dining, but we are both looking forward to this next week!

Does anyone know when D' Coal Pot is moving to their new location? They've been working on a beautiful new building for almost two years now. We had hoped that location would be open when we were there in February, but no such luck.

About 7 or 8 years ago I was managing a villa and one week the guests were a couple who hadn't been back to Tortola since they had gotten engaged on Long Bay Beach 15 years earlier. They were back with their two young teenage children and they requested a private chef for a night to make a "great local style meal" so I enlisted Johnny Smith, Mrs. Scatliffe's grandson and a good friend, and I acted as his sous chef. As we were preparing their meal in the villa's kitchen, the wife who was renting regaled us with a story about going to Mrs. Scatliffe's for dinner 15 years earlier and having Mrs. Scatliffe's "adorable" 12 or 13 year old young grandson as their waiter. Johnny looked up from the stove and said "that was me!" What a great night that was!

Red Rock in East End is under new management. Fantastic. They will pick you up in Trellis or Fat Hogs if you call. Have summer menu starting July 15.

I second the Red Rock recommendation. We had our boat "Goose" moored at Penn's Landing last Feb and ate at the Red Rock several times. Fantastic and great service!
