It warms my heart to see multi-generational trip reports. I hope we will be able to take our son, future in law and grandkids on trips.

That fruit your kids were eating is called guinep or Spanish lime. They are now in season and are loved by the locals almost as much as mangoes. For more info, go here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melicoccus_bijugatus

I'd forgotten what they were called.
The bartender told us that once you eat the meat you can roast the nut in the middle and eat it like a peanut.
