New Years Eve Week

What can anyone tell me about spending the week after Christmas including NYE. We will be on a bareboat charter with our two sons 15/16. How are the seas? Can we make the passage to Anegada? Where should we rule out for mooring due to the n swells? When should we get to little harbour to get a ball for nye?

Too many questions all at once.

Christmas winds may still be blowing. Notwithstanding, most bareboats should have little difficulty with the trip to anegada.

Use windguru to check on swells. If no swell is running, then no issues.

Cgb and cooper no good in a swell. Worse in a mono than a cat.

I was there for that week in 2014/2015. I was captaining a Voyage 500, and we had a second Voyage 500 in our "fleet", with a total of 17 people.

That all depends on the moment. When we were there they were fairly calm... no problems with the North swell, and we even stayed overnight at White Bay w/o a problem.

Yes. I don't understand why this would be dictated by the time of year... check out the conditions/forecast the day before, and then go if all is good. The passage from North Sound VG to Anegada is fairly well protected from ocean swells due to horseshoe reef. Plus, it's only a two hour sail/motor from cut at Colquhoun Reef(VG).

If the swells are up you want to avoid bays with a northern exposure, of course (e.g. Savannah Bay, CGB, Brewers). Some bays suffer from the swell wrapping around the islands, such as White Bay & Manchioneel. You'll just need to play it by ear, and have a backup plan for your anchorages if the swells come up.

If you want even a chance of getting a mooring ball in the area (Great Harbor, White Bay, Little Harbor, or even Long Bay / Diamond Cay) then you'll have to get there in the morning on the 30th, at least a day and a half before NYE. In all honesty, you should plan to anchor. We anchored both of our Voyage 500s in about 35' of water at the mouth of Great Harbor, arriving mid-morning on the 31st, and didn't have a problem. Despite all of the dire warnings on this forum of disastrous boating and anchoring in GH, we didn't see any shenanigans. There was even a squall that came through at about 3 am (Jan 1) with winds blowing 35+ that caused every boat in Great Harbor to spin more than 90 degrees, and I didn't see a single boat drag or collide with another...

Now, is it worth it to deal with the thousands of people on land, long lines to get small, watered-down drinks, and overall cluter-F that is Old Years Night at Foxy's/GH? Well, that's up to you to decide <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Cheers.gif" alt="" />

And I'll offer up a little secret (if it can be called that);
On New Years Day (Jan 1) wait until the hangover migration begins, some time early to mid-morning. You'll see them headed out of Great Harbor and White Bay, motoring toward Steel Point / West End of Tortola.
When that exodus begins, pull around and grab a ball in White Bay - you'll practically have the place to yourself. We did that on the trip mentioned above, and we had SDB to ourselves until almost noon, including a nice breakfast buffet.
