G - seems nothing coming out of CGB, nor Sopers
No contacts have checked in since the storm
Some public comments report CGB hit hard, with Myett's & Quito's roof's gone - but, no doubt you have seen this also

I am worried about both, with the way the wind clocked around to the west. Surge into Westend could have been huge.

Bridge to Frenchmans Cay is gone. Have not heard from Island Jim or or Doc Howard who holed up in Howards place north side of Sopers. One report that 80% of CGB gone. Quito's no longer exist. Myetts roof gone. All of White Bay except Hendos and part of Soggy gone. Carrot Bay flooded. All boats sheltered in Paraquita in a big pile in the mangroves. Moorings dock in RT a total desaster. Village Cay Marina the same. Large cat up sideways on the TMM docks.

One piece of good news VHF radio report that Nick and Monica and the staff at Leverick are OK. Not so for the docks and most buildings. Not much else out of VG other than lost roofs.

Reports from most areas are coming in, sadly none of them good. Not a word from Sopers. Hope no news is good news but afraid it's the opposite.

Does anyone have contact with Visar people?
I can't get in touch with the one fellow there that I know

Perhaps, if they have time - they can give some insight

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/07/2017 08:14 PM

Just saw a report on Sopers from Lynn Keneway: All boats have sunk (nichole, branson, pajamas, music, kendall) people are looting harbor market and marine store. Pussers gone. Indigo house looks ok. Inspirado house gone. Blades house roof gone. Sharns travel lift down. All boats on the hard have been damaged knocked over or on top of buildings. Ottertude catamaran is on top of Betito's building.

There is nothing left on JVD. Gertrude medivac'ed out. Peter Sean and Kendall are in a tender heading to JVD to rescue some.

George, I saw a post that referenced Soper's.. Ottertude was upside down, Pussers destroyed, market destroyed..and more.. can't verify, but doesn't sound good.

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/07/2017 08:23 PM

That's sad, the owner of Ottertude is the person reported to have bailed Voyage out financially. I guess if Pussers is gone all the buildings from the shipyard to the market are probably gone. Hope that the main dive shop for Bluewater Divers survived. Sounds like the Sopers location is gone. Keith and his brother built a nice business. I just don't see how many can recover from this. I fear my home away from home will never be the same.

Lots of pics of Tortola and some of cane garden on facebook

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/07/2017 08:27 PM

Yeah, it is going to take a lot to recover. Having seen huge damage in Vermont after Irene, a number of businesses there just never recovered and are no more. I think a lot will depend on insurance coming through, if someone has it.

Any word on the Willy T? If Bomba's made it I'm hoping the WT did also. There has to be something left as inspiration to rebuild. I heard Foxy is still on for his visit/performance at the Foxy's in Maryland. I can't imagine that's true? I'll be donating time and/or money even if I can only swing $50 so looking forward to info on where efforts can be made.

If you consider the many piece of scrap wood and pantys scattered all over Cappoons Bay I suppose you could say, in a manner of speaking, that Bombas still exist. In kit form.

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/07/2017 09:38 PM

I'm afraid Bomba was making a funny. There's no way the Shack is still standing.
On Facebook - "Where the Coconuts Grow" looks to have someone on island posting, and "Windtraveler", who is currently in Chicago, but lives on a sailboat in Tortola and partially owns Aristocat is also posting updates.
Captain Fatty Goodlander is also regularly posting on FB, and has a big following of island friends that will be getting updates.

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/08/2017 12:07 AM

I had my doubts about the Bomba story but I guess at this point I'm desperate for any "good" news. I figured if there was one 2x4 with a piece of plywood attached then you could say Bomba's officially survived. I guess you could also say he expanded all over the BVI.

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/08/2017 12:37 PM

Bomba's did not make it. Saw the picture this morning of CGB, and Quito's was still there, looks like some roof damage & the deck is gone.

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/08/2017 07:21 PM

There are no cell phones or power working in WE -- there are some videos available from: Caribbean Buzz Helicopters on FB. WE ferry terminal is all but gone, the road/bridge to Harbor market is still there, Harbor market is standing but looted, Voyage yachts are all gone -- Ottertude was flipped up on a roof top next to the shipyard, Pussers is gone, Fish n Lime is gone.

BS Glenn is fine and on target to feeding the kids of Tortola. The less than welcoming feel on both ends of Tortola have harmed many. Anything less than a wide open hussle welcoming people and materials will not be in the best interest of the recovery and next generation.

If you are worried about drugs a couple of small framed females and small talented canines can tell law enforcement who to follow up with.

In 2018 never make a visitor wait between the time they land and the taxi. No forms, nothing

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/09/2017 02:05 AM

I see nothing wrong with Glenn's quip
I could share a few myself to lighten the mood.. except for concern of getting flamed like he just got.

All being said - via video from CBH... my place above the ferry terminal was on the video
Sadly.. wind must have got under the 2nd floor balcony overhang - tore that off - taking half the roof with it

Let's see... are we allowed to pack hammers'n'saws in carry-on ?
((sigh))

what the people on Tortola need right now is heavy equipment and construction workers to rebuild. I am a carpenter from New York and would throw my hat into the ring if I knew which hat to throw it into. Don't know what to do help out. Maybe give money.

I had a corkscrew confiscated by TSA a few weeks ago that I forgot was in carryon. We sat in first class where they gave me a 6 inch metal knife with lunch. Don't think your tools would pass.

Glad you want to help!

I will pile on.

They need unlimited and unthreatened water. If that means bottles Walmart will do it better than anyone else.

Then need basic food supply again Walmart.

The debris must dissapear. Contractors and equipment. It must be gone to a new near shore reef or off the North Drop. Do it NOW.

Then a cruise ship to house the help.

Mr. Carpenter while there is talent on the islands and more that can learn...

Massivw square meters of stripped blue toof must be laid.

Only then can the long term recovery start:

Food and Sheltee then we move forward just like any migrant in history.

I have spent 3 days searching for news of friends trappeed in a diaster of biblical proportion and seen to many pictures of the remains of places of which I have fond memories all the while in fear that a dear frind's home lo longer exist. If one cannot find a bit of humor in this chaos depression would be the result and at a time like this depression is our worst enemy.

I have lived through many difficult times in life myself, cancer, divorce, loss of a child to a drunk driver. it's good to grieve, but then I need to find some humor to survive. If you can't laugh, you're going to cry.

Amen to some humor.
I was in surgery (I am a surgeon) as eye of Irma went thru... we play music during surgery..

Me "Alexa, play "Eye of the Tiger" and "Alexa, order me "Gone with the Wind"

After seeing boats(mine?) : "Alexa, play "Buy me a Boat"

to this end (gallows humour) ... at least Mal won't be complaining about CGB being packed with cruise ship tourists for a while.....

On a serious note - all this volunteering has me thinking
Chicken or egg situation...
Where would the volunteers be housed ?
Shelter is short for locals, much less do-good visitors
Then there is food shortage, and have you noticed how many vehicles are destroyed....
Not sure how something like this plays out best

Seems a bit of basic infrastructure must first come back before the volume of helping hands arrives

Probably a good thing... with a hammer in my hands...
Likely start thinking the window is out of alignment.. and just a tiny tap should fix it...

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/13/2017 01:39 AM

I've seen posts that it was sunk, but the most recent post said it was up on land somewhere not too far away but the top half pretty much destroyed.

Both locations sustained catastrophic damage. The Red Box & Fuel Dock on Marina Cay are completely gone. I don't have any of the West End photos on this computer - but have seen them on the Facebook BVI Hurricane Irma Page and they are terrible.

While I hate to be the bearer of bad news, I figured you'd want to see these photos.

The most important thing is that the employees have been accounted for and are safe. Paul Mason, manager of Marina Cay took these photos - except for the first one of the 'before' status of the Red Box.

I'km including a link to the Pusser's Hurricane Irma Disaster Relief Fund - for those of you who are able to donate.

Re: Westend/Sopers and Cane Garden Bay. - 09/21/2017 12:55 PM

That's worse than I expected. Still it could be rebuilt quickly if the money and the will is there. I suspect however that many don't have insurance. It just gets sadder each day. So much in the BVI I wanted to share with my grandkids. I still have hopes things will come back faster than we think at the moment.
Still no good overall pictures of West End. Anyone found anything online? Can't get over the Pussers webcam showing at least 4 boats sitting at anchor with no hurricane prep hours before the storm hit.
