Feb Trip - 01/15/2018 09:23 PM

Hi Friends,
First post! Headed to the BVI for a bareboat charter for the 3rd time this Feb. Know it will be a different trip- looking for any new/updated info on locations, restaurants, moorings? We have a plan in mind but know it will change as things open.
Thanks for the warm welcome.

We are heading down on Tuesday Feb 27, we were down in December as well. What are you thinking of doing. Are you hoping to eat out at restaurants vs cooking on board? Tell me what you hope is back in operation and I can give you some ideas based on last month and what we’re expecting in February

Re: Feb Trip - 01/16/2018 11:21 AM

Jagmansr,
Thanks- we are expecting some differences for this 6 night trip we’ve typically done the same trip each time Norman, Cooper, North sound, Marina Cay, JVD. But know this will change- is there still moorings in Spanish town? Any ideas about scrub island opening for dinners? Or if Marina cay mooring field is there? We know MC won’t be operational but it’s a beautiful spot.
Finally-we’re veterans of the ‘high season’ and racing to places to get a mooring- were assuming it won’t be as crowded? But not too sure what to expect!

Cooper will not be open until the beginning of April - Leverick is up and running at full steam in the North Sound but both Saba and Bitter End are closed for the season. You could stay at Leverick and rent a car to go to the Baths, etc.

You might consider including Anegada - everything is open there and you can have a great dinner ashore at Wonky Dog - I would plan two nights there and rent a vehicle.

JVD has lots open - Bee Line Beach Bar near Diamond Cay, Foxy's in Great Harbor, Soggy, Hendo's, Coco Loco at White Bay. Pirates is open at Norman.

Scrub stated on their FB page that they should be open by March 1. Not sure about February though. Supposedly, mooring balls are available at Marina Cay.

I would really like to know if there are mooring balls available at Marina Cay. Thinking about staying there last night before returning to Scrub.

Will update after our Trip with what we learn/see!
Any idea about moorings left a peter? We’re in and out of Nanny and that would be a good last night spot (last night aboard!) since we will do Norman first.

Bridget,

Who do we rent a car from on Anegada?

Re: Feb Trip - 01/17/2018 06:05 PM

I just got back on Sunday from a 7 day charter. I am working on a report now. We stayed at
Norman-lots of balls and the restaurant is open.

Jost Van Dyke- Great Harbor and had lunch at Foxy's and a couple other little shops were open there. Across the bay at a green building/dock you can get gas and water.

Little Jost-Stayed at Diamond Cay. Going ashore was very sad as the two buildings/bars there are completely gone. Bubbly pool is there but a completely different experience with all the vegetation there. B-Line said it is open but we were only one of three boats there so it didn't appear to be open when we were there.

Guana Island-All the moorings were full when we stayed there (I think there are around 11 of them). Beautiful beach, atmosphere, and overall a nice evening/afternoon.

Anegada-Stayed two nights here. Got a car from Dean Wheatley dwjeep@hotmail.com Great guy! Flash of Beauty beach/bar was destroyed so we didn't spend much time there. Had lunch at Loblolly and was a great time as usual. Everything looked great. Then off to Cow Wreck where they are already building some new structures but looks just wonderful still.

Leverick-Contacted Nick and got a slip (they now have ice and water) we attended the Friday Night BBQ and was a lot of fun. Nick helped us get a rental car and went to the Baths and no one was there. It was awesome. Driving through Spanish Town and seeing all the boats there was not awesome and very sad.

Stopped at Nanny Cay to fill up on Gas. The pool and beach bar look awesome and inviting. Spent the night at Peter Island. Lots of balls and not many people.

We hear that Oil Nut Bay on Virgin Gorda is welcoming charters to stay at their dock if you eat lunch at the resort. You are welcome to use the facilities as well. We just ran out of time so we weren't able to do it. I wish we would have. A friend got an email about Oil Nut Bay from a charter captain down there. I could do some searching to find it if it would be of help.

Saw people on the balls at Marina Cay, Trellis, and Cooper.

The mooring balls are still there at MC but I didn't check how many had pendants. I did see boats moored there last week.

Note that all the mooring pendants at BEYC (except for 3 large private balls) have been removed.

Great to know- that may be our last night on our Feb charter.

First I've heard of water at Great Harbor since Irma- is that the old customs dock you are referring to?

The destroyed building- was that Foxy's Taboo? So many good memories. And we were at B-Line as they were just building out and getting started last summer- soooo hoping to find them back open and Chicken behind the bar!

Are you talking about White Bay, Guana Island, or Monkey Point? It's been some years, but last time we were at Guana, there was only anchoring at White Bay and moorings only at Monkey Point.

So sorry to hear about Flash of Beauty. But we will definitely be back to Big Bamboo. And of course we will have to return to Cow Wreck- the only other time we've been there they were out of burgers!!

We have basically built our trip to begin at Leverick with Michael Beans. Thank you Beans and Nick!!

Peter might also be our last night. Should we expect nothing open yet?

We are still a month out and thinking of saving a night for Trellis. Any prospects on what might be open by mid to late February?

Thanks again Jlars and looking forward to your report!

Re: Feb Trip - 01/19/2018 05:37 PM

Is anyone collecting mooring fees at Marina Cay, Trellis and Cooper? Just curious... we don't mind paying them, just want to be sure that the collector is legit.

Re: Feb Trip - 01/19/2018 08:56 PM

I'm not sure if it is the old customs dock on Jost or not, but you can't miss it with the green building.

Yes, it was Foxy's Taboo that is destroyed in Diamond Cay. The B line looked like it was back up and looking good from the water, we just didn't physically go up on shore to see it.

White Bay Guana Island has about 11 mooring balls. Monkey Point which is just south of there had some mooring balls for snorkeling/day use but not overnight there.

We were going to dock at the resort on Peter Island but nothing is open there so we stayed in Great Harbor on Peter Island instead. There used to be a little beach bar and water toys to rent. Surprisingly, the structure of the beach bar looks like it survived but the dock and area around the beach bar is a mess.

No one came to collect mooring ball money at Diamond Cay, Guana, or Peter Island.

Re: Feb Trip - 02/04/2018 04:27 PM

I had heard that Bitter End and Saba removed the pennants from mooring balls. Can anyone confirm?

Re: Feb Trip - 02/04/2018 05:17 PM

BEYC pendants are removed on all but 3 large mooring ball that look to be marked private.

Several Biras Creek moorings have their pendants. As of 2 weeks ago, there was an overturned power boat still tied to a mooring in the middle of the bay.

I'd heard that as well about Bitter End mooring pennants (confirmed by forum member Christo), but I had not heard that about Saba moorings. Anyone?

Re: Feb Trip - 02/04/2018 09:39 PM

Saba mooring balls all had pennants (as of 20th Jan). We motored through the mooring field to confirm this.

Marina Cay balls all had pennants (as of 20th Jan). Ideal, as Diamond Reef was an amazing snorkel, no damage from Irma/Maria.

Nobody collecting fees at Saba or BEYC. But they did come out at Marina Cay and at Cooper...Norman...Jost GH...Anegada...

I'd look into Oil Nut Bay, we found it a great addition. PM if you want any specifics or contact details.

This morning, it looked like Trellis bay moorings had pennants. There were at least 5 or 6 boats moored or anchored there.

Great news about Trellis Bay Jason! Any news on openings? Last Resort?

The only things I saw open were the Trellis Bay Market and Aragon's.

If you're planning to boat into Trellis, I would exercise caution. Based on the amount of debris on the beach, I would expect there are a lot of hazards in the water.
