dog transportation from US to BVI/USVI/PR - 08/16/2018 02:55 AM

Hello All-
Wondering if anyone has experience or knowledge of means of transporting a Labrador Retriever to the BVI or PR or USVI. We do not trust commercial airlines pet cargo transportation. Maybe a charter flight from FLA but that may be cost prohibitive. Is anyone aware of any ocean transportation options for passengers and pets from FLA to the sites mentioned above? I believe Cape Air allows pets to fly but that would only be from PR to BVI or USVI We would stay one to four months in the BVI if we can transport the pooch.
Thanks

A number of our neighbors have brought their dogs. One brought his chocolate lab, Godiva, every year. Some have hitched a ride on private or corporate jets - lucky them! A charter from Florida must cost plenty.

I wouldn’t trust a dog with a connecting flight, but maybe on a direct flight in winter. So if you could get a direct flight to San Juan or St. Thomas, then charter a flight to Beef, you should be okay. I’ve seen quite a few dogs in San Juan airport post-Irma.

Post-María, many "satos" - Puerto Rican street dogs - are being collected and flown to adopters and shelters in the states, so yes, you see more and more dogs in SJU these days

Transportation of dogs via land or sea from the US to the Caribbean was not covered in " ANY DETAIL" or at all in the thread referenced above

That is because there is obviously no way by land and vertually no way by sea other than a private yacht.

I would never put a dog you care about in the baggage hold of a airliner. To many things can go wrong and even if it goes well it’s traumatic for the dog.
The only option is to declare that you are disabled and get a fake ESA certificate to bring the dog in the cabin. Your personal level of integrity will have to guide you on this. So many people have abused this privilege that it may go away soon. Sad for the few that actually needed it.

George--the original post already said they would not put the dog in a commercial cargo hold, which I personally would never do in a million years, for a pleasure trip. I actually have seen some commercial private services that transport dogs, but I'm sure the cost is astronomical. I actually THINK that there are SOME cruise ships that do have facilities for dog kennels onboard, I'm thinking perhaps some of the Cunard ships?? Suggest that the original poster contact a CRUISE ONLY travel agent with that particular question, to see if that is an option. I don't think any cruise ships are yet going to the BVI but they are going to STT by now..

With regard to the fake ESA question, I have a good friend who is involved with dog competitions at a very high level, and he tells me that many people have their performing dogs certified as ESA dogs, so that they can take their Labradors, Belgian Melinois, etc., in the main cabin, for free. Oh, and on a somewhat similar note, the other day I was at the grocery store, and watched three VERY able bodied people hop out of monster of those monster jacked up trucks, parked in a handicapped space. The truck did have a 'hang-tag' handicapped plackard on the mirror. I muttered under my breath that they certainly looked like they NEEDED that handicapped space. (Especially considering I KNOW no legitimately handicapped person could have gotten IN or OUT of that truck!) The woman responded "My mother is handicapped". I seriously considered responding "Where is she??", but figured I didn't want to get pounded into the ground by such trailer park trash. Hopefully there is a fourth circle of Hell for both such types of people...
