Heads-up, FYI! Monster Celebrity "Edge" cruise liner - 12/05/2018 05:26 PM

This is a heads up, FYI only, for those planning your charters/vacations.
HOPEFULLY THIS THREAD WILL NOT TO TURN INTO A PROS/CONS ABOUT CRUISES.

I read today that Celebrity cruise line's new monster high-end cruise liner (an understatement!!) will be docking at Tortola starting Dec 2018.
1004 ft (306m), 10 decks, with 1300+ crew! (https://www.cruisemapper.com/ships/Celebrity-Edge-1588)

https://www.celebritycruises.com/edge/

Can't imagine what the "suites" are priced at!! Gotta have a 7-figure income for those!

Just where are 2900-3300 passengers going to deboard and "play" in Roadtown and surroundings??
Wow, surprised that the Roadtown pier can handle a 1000 footer but looking at what else docks there (Disney, Norwegian with their 3000+ passengers ) on the Ports Authority web site it must fit.

The Baths, Indians, CGB, beaches are going to be swamped even more than with the current "little" Romney cruisers.

Tortola stop will be part of some of the "7-Night Eastern Caribbean Cruise", https://cruiseweb.com/cruise-lines/celebrity-cruises/destination-eastern-caribbean

One has to dig into the itineraries to see it stopping in Tortola. (AND OTHER ITINERARIES/DATES HAVE STOPS IN NEARBY Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas!!!
So day trippers will be swamping Indians, etc then too)
Currently scheduled to dock in Tortola;
Dec 19, 2018, and about every 2 weeks in 2019 (Jan 16, Jan 30, Feb 13, Feb 27, Mar 13, Mar 27, Apr 10, ...) (Whew! Missing our trip by a few days!!)

Will have to monitor the BVI Ports Authority for all the cruise ship schedules. Web site doesn't have 2019 schedules listed yet. (http://bviports.org/cruise-schedule/)

While I'm not a fan of any of the cruise ships, I don't see anything alarming about this particular ship. It holds less passengers than many other ships that stop in Tortola. Norwegian Getaway, Disney Fantasy, Norwegian Bliss, and several others all hold over 4000 passengers.

What exactly are you trying to get at?

Jason
Just providing a heads up to everyone of one more large cruise ship besides the other larger ones already docking in the area for people to be on the alert so can plan their excursions to avoid the day tripper crowds in Roadtown and elsewhere.

Here is the "official" schedule from the Port Authority. The first day Celebrity Edge is in port, her size and passenger count will be dwarfed by Norwegian Bliss at 1,093 feet and 4,990 passengers.

We've sailed on the Celebrity Reflection, maybe not quite as large, but in the same league. It's a beautiful ship inside but IMO butt ugly on the outside. A towering top heavy barge.

That said, we're doing a second trans Atlantic on her this April.....

Jason--correct. To call the Edge a 'monster' these days really isn't correct, not by the current standards of ships..

The Disney Fantasy and the Queen Mary 2, both bigger than the Celebrity Edge, were both docked at Tortola yesterday.

After New Years, Suites are around $5,600. Not what I'd pay but certainly not outrageous.

A very large one just went north up the SFD channel. It must have left Road Town about 3:30. It was the larger of two in port today.
