St John / South Coast

St John / South Coast - 03/20/2019 11:57 PM

We are chartering with Virgin Island Yacht Charters (Compass Pt Marina, St Thomas) for the second year in April. Loved our overnight stop at Maho Bay last year on the north side of St John and planning to stay there for the last night this year. Would like to explore the south coast - Lameshur and Salt Pond Bay and choose one for our first overnight. Then planning to clear customs at Soper's Hole enroute to Indians, Rhone and overnight at Cooper for 2nd night. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for the Lameshur or Salt Pond Bay stop?

Hey Finn, we have stayed several nights in Great Lameshur bay and loved it. It was very calm and most of the time we was the only boat there, We did pick a ball up in Salt pond bay once but decided to not spend the night just due to the smell of the salt pond. Both bays have great hiking trails.

Three of my favorite anchorages. Only 5 mooring balls at Salt Pond so you can count the number moored boats before bothering to enter the bay (and I've never gotten a bad smell from the pond). In April, you'll get a sundown view to the ocean from the outer balls at Great Lameshur, but it will be obstructed by headlands at the Little Lameshur and SPB moorings. I would pick SPB as having the best snorkeling in terms of reliably seeing sea turtles, eagle rays, and southern stingrays. Great Lameshur beach is cobble. Little Lameshur and SPD are nice sand with generally fewer beachgoers at Little Lameshur.
