North Sound Moorings - 05/06/2019 01:55 AM

Hi all,

It’s been about five years since last I was in the BVI’s. We’ve usually spent an overnight at either Saba or BEYC...understand they are not operating yet. But at there still moorings available there or are the only moorings at Leverick? Any tips on where to grab a ball up round those parts for one night?

Leverick might be your best bet. Early would be a good plan.

Saba and BEYC are still in the rebuilding process .

As far as we know, the moorings there at Saba and BEYC, the moorings may not have been maintained.

You can reserve boaty ball moorings, at Leverick, or cooper, it is a new company, check out the huge long thread on this forum or their website..

Also, we are going to check out the moorings at vixen point, and see if the Sandbox has reopened.

Will be posting a trip report around June 2nd or 3rd and have the latest scoops on what we observe.

Also, your chart briefer with what ever bare boat charter company you are with, will have the latest updates as well.

We anchored at Leverick last week for the Michael Bean show as all moorings were taken. The next day we went up to Saba Rock and picked up a mooring to explore the area by dinghy for a few hours but did not spend the night. The mooring line seemed OK and I backed down on it at 2500 RPM's but not sure I would trust for an overnight if the wind was howling. Saba is still under construction and looks like it will be for some time. There were many balls in front of what was the Bitter End which basically does not exist anymore. They torn down every building and all old foundations and seem to be building new from scratch. There were also balls in Biras Creek that some boats were on. The Sandbox is still under construction and it did not look like it would be opening soon either but there are mooring balls off their beach that other boats were on. So in a nut shell Leverick is the only place open in North Sound and looks like it will be that way for quite some time.

We were at Leverick this week. Highly recommend not being late on arrival, we got there around 3pm and were lucky to find a ball but it was basically the last one. The other boat in our group wasn’t as lucky so they ended up over near Bitter End & Biras Creek and there were a handful of boats and several more balls available. Seems like a good backup spot if leverick is full when you arrive.

There are plenty of spots near Leverick to anchor. The holding is excellent.
