A Few Questions for Upcoming Charter

A Few Questions for Upcoming Charter - 10/14/2019 01:28 PM

This will be our second charter in the BVI. We'll be on board October 25-November 3.

1. Any hesitations about visiting Cooper Island Beach Club on their opening day?
2. How crowded will Foxy's be on the 26th for the Halloween Catfight? I'm not concerned about Foxy's itself but the mooring field. Do you suspect it will be difficult to get a ball?
3. We've only ever moored, never anchored. Any advice?

Thanks

Great holding in Great Harbor. There is usually room in the front of the mooring field, but could all full due to the Catfight.

I am going to disagree with the great holding in great harbor. Before the moorings balls were put in it was noted as a tough place to get a anchor properly set. It was rare that I could back down on the anchor at my desired RPM and not have it drag. It often took 3 or 4 attempts to get a set I was happy with. The good news is that’s it’s generally well sheltered unless you get a storm generating a strong south wind.

I have to agree with George......whenever I've anchored in GH I've brought out the fenders......I think I have a picture somewhere of our GPS track while trying to get an anchor to hold, looks like something from an Etch-a-Sketch...if anybody remembers those!

Not to pile on but they added mooring balls and squeezed out the eastern anchoring spot. In February I was moored in very most eastern end and a group came in late and tired to anchor east of me...i told the crew either they will throw out enough chain that they will swing out around and hit us or not enough and they will drift. Turned out to be the former. After a "discussion" with the drunk crew member who was passed out on the boat and the group she called back from Foxys they checked their anchor watch and moved away...

My advice would be to go to Long Bay/Diamond Cay or Little Harbour and land taxi over and back

Great Harbour mooring field fills up on Friday - the day before the Cat Fight. The boats that are racing on Saturday lock their dinghies to the ball during the race. I plan to arrive Friday morning to secure a mooring.

With no anchoring experience, keep Little Harbour or Diamond Cay as your backup plan for a mooring ball then taxi to Foxy's.
