Sample Itinerary/Resources

Sample Itinerary/Resources - 07/10/2020 12:21 PM

So, it's starting to look like we've got a crew together and someone can bring Tortuga over from BVI for a week in Aug. Yeah!

Now I need to figure out USVI. Can anyone point out some resources for:
Sample itineraries (I don't believe this trip will bring us to St Croix so really just the St Thomas/St John harbours
Mooring and anchorage info
Additional cruising guide. We have the regular BVI one that has some pages in the back for USVI
Ice/Water options: we have a watermaker but I like to know what Plan B will be
Provisioning/Alcohol.
Any limitations on bringing in frozen food?

I believe the delivery company will bring it to AYH in Red Hook and we'll have 7-8 days aboard

Thanks for any feedback, this will be a fun crash course!

RickG on the forum lives on STJ and is a sailor. He is a great source of info, as is CaptJay.

No problem at all with frozen foods.

On STJ, go to Cruz Bay for provisions as there are three good grocery stores. Cruz Bay has lots of great bars and restaurants as well.

Thanks again! I'm seeing the provisioning options around CA and CYOA. Wondering what the options are near Red Hook?

Would it be better for us to
1) get a cab at the airport
2) ask them to stop on the way at a grocery store

Does anyone deliver there? Same with alcohol? Again, preference is to not be carrying around beer cases and water bottles.

That car rental for a day thing is starting to look like a viable option but we hadn't really planned to hang around that long.

We are chartering out of Compass Point Marina (near Red Hook) on July 26th. After research, we plan on renting a car for 1 day ($100) from the airport through Paradise. And we can leave it at the marina for them to pick up the next morning. We will provision through CostULess (sounds similar to CostCo), which is on the way. You can pre-order on-line and then pick up. I know they have alcohol, but I can't seem to order that on-line, so we will have to select and buy there. Then we will stop by Food Center or Moes in Red Hook to get produce, gourmet, and meats, etc. Fingers crossed, given the governors orders yesterday, that our trips remain on. Good luck!

You can provision across the street from American Yacht Harbor at Moe’s and use the Dock carts to take it to your slip.

That is a particularly unfair characterization of the changes the Governor has announced.
Few of them will affect the sailing travelers for instance in any great way - no sitting at a bar or being on a beach after 4pm Sat/Sun.
Certainly the Covid 19 test required after 7/15 from high infected states may present a problem in timing and availability but:

** total buzz kill **

seems a drastic comment from a forum moderator.

Depends on where they are coming from. If coming from Florida or anywhere else on the high risk list, the test requirements can be a BIG deal..

Luckily PA is not on the state list for testing but honestly if that changes our whole crew is fine to be tested. As for bars after 4, that's not why we're coming. We expect all or most dinners on the boat and any non-boat dinners to be outdoors.

We're coming for the sunshine, sailing, snorkeling, paddleboarding and relaxing. If I have to wear a mask or have them swab my brain to do it I'm fine with that. Swab away.

You are going to LOVE IT.

Buy a $99 countertop ice maker from Home Depot that you can plug in Jay and Debbie have one on board and say it works great.

Ice can for sure be an issue - we stocked up at both Cruz and Coral — you can reprovision groceries at Dolphin Market in both Cruz and Coral Bay. You need to anchor at Coral unless you have a pal with a private mooring - Lime Out was great fun.

We had an amazing trip. I am sure you saw some of our pics on FB.
