Sargassum- which beaches to avoid or go to? - 10/04/2015 01:52 PM

Arriving in 2 weeks, wondering where to go?

So many threads on this, wondering if anyone has a report on which beaches are unaffected...

Thanks in advance

What is current today is likely to be very outdated in 2 weeks. This situation can change daily and that was proven by the most recent posts. Orient had been bad but was reported as clean now. Great Bay was reported as being bad recently so one never knows.

mdjordy,

No promises for sure, but two beaches you might try are the beach at Anse Marcel and Friars Bay. When we were there these two beaches were consistently clean and seaweed free even when other beaches in their locations were not so great.

Perhaps anyone there more recently than us will comment as to their current status.

The seaweed situation changes daily, but places that seem to have had a consistent problem recently are Dawn Beach and French cul de sac (for the boat to Pinel). Otherwise, Orient seems to have a recurrent issue, Mullet occasionally and Simpson Bay beach occasionally. Hard to know what the situation will be like in two weeks.

The French government had earmarked money for clean up at Cul De Sac not to long ago. Must have been a one shot deal and no follow up.

Could probably add Happy Bay and Grand Case beach as safe bets as well.

The French government apparently has an ongoing project for seaweed cleanup, as does the Dutch side. I know they did clean up Cul de Sac, but more reports since then of bad seaweed there.

Looking at the Great Bay web cam some of the vendors cleaned up the sea weed and some didn't. You can tell by the changes in umbrella colors which ones did. Having a ship in port helps the incentive. Not much showing in the surf there this morning.

I am not familiar with the location of any of the SXM beaches, but the south facing beaches on Anguilla (those facing SXM)have been plagued with seaweed since April.

Again today, OB was clear from Bikini all the way to Papagayo. But as has been said repeatedly, no guarantees for tomorrow - and especially weeks from now.
