Monkeys on the island? - 08/30/2016 09:44 PM

My wife and I have been going to the island for over 30 years and I was just informed that the is a hidden place that has a pool, chairs and monkeys in the nearby trees. Does anyone know where this is?

Loterie Farm? It's on the road to Pic Paridise. It has a pool and chairs; not sure about the monkeys, lol.

Could it be Loterie Farm? They have a lovely pool with cabanas and comfy chairs, and the trees around the area would make a great place for the monkeys to play.

Along with the kitties, there used to be an occasional visiting monkey at one of the hotels in the Cupecoy area. We never stayed there but used to enjoy the occasional breakfast and just once we actually got to see the monkey come down the stairs and wander out on the pool deck before he departed again. I don't know if this was the norm or just an occasional thing.

Once upon a time there was a restaurant called the Rusty Pellican on Front Street - now known as the Greenhouse - that had their own monkey tethered to one of the big trees (now gone....) in the outer lobby area. They are around the island, for sure.

In almost 15 years of visiting SXM we saw monkeys for the first time on our stay last winter. We saw them 3 times, each time as we were leaving or coming back to Princess Heights where we were staying.

There are hundreds of Monkeys on the Island. They used to live in the hills around Pic Paradis, but now they are everywhere. We have a family of 4-5 on the hill behind our apt. in Grand Case. I have seen 15-20 in one place eating mangos in Dawn Beach. The population has grown so much that some Govt. officials have put out a survey to see what damage people are experiencing. They are trying to get an idea of ways to stop them from producing without harming them. They rarely go near people, but they are definately here to stay!

Loterie Farm's website states they have monkeys on the property. My wife and I went there in February for the first time, but we didn't see any. We really didn't hike around a lot either. Lunch was good!

This is an article from 2014, but Vervet Monkeys have been reported on the Island as far back as 2008. Check out the videos on you tube (Monkeys in Sint Maarten or St. Martin). ..Dawn Beach, Oyster pond etc

"Nature Foundation has been conducting baseline surveys to determine the abundance and level of threat posed by the invasive monkey population. Extensive research on controlling the monkey population is also being conducted and government will receive a report from the foundation.

Experts used to dealing with monkeys and other exotic invasive animals will visit various locations in the country to come up with recommendations on the best way to approach the monkey problem.

Residents have contacted Nature Foundation about large groups of Vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) acting aggressively to residents and pets, overturning garbage bins in numerous districts, destroying gardens and garden furniture and defecating on people’s property. The monkeys have been known to act aggressively if they feel threatened and can also have a negative effect on our local flora and fauna. Monkeys are not picky eaters and will eat anything from bird eggs to ornamental and fruit plants and trees.

Residents are urged by the foundation to not approach these animals."

Definitely at the Lotterie Farm a short walk up the hill below the zip line trail. Sturdy walking shoes recommended,
not flip flops.
Pretty sure they are closing tomorrow for renovations.
Yes they love to eat mangos and drop them on you.
Watch out when the pee.

My parents had a monkey living in their yard (in Colombier) for about a year, eating ALL their mangoes.

He appears to have left sometime in March, but we'll see.

Yes, that would be The Summit. Along with the cats, there was a monkey who would visit. Wild Bill has pictures of him.
BTW, the breakfast was great!!
We stayed there several times when Chloe and Thierry were making the breakfast!!

We saw about two dozen inside Loterie Farm near the left of the entrance in December a couple of years back.
