We haven't eaten at Mark's in years so want to give it a try this trip.

A good variety of reasonably priced and well prepared food. Lots of local business and a brisk carry-out business most of the time also.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/26/2016 05:40 PM

We have eaten at Mark's Place on lots of Sundays in February. If he's closed now, it doesn't say so on his website. I would definitely call there to check it out.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/26/2016 05:46 PM

Possibly a low season thing to be closed on Sunday?

Re: Mark's Place - 10/26/2016 05:55 PM

They provide good food, and usually a lot of it, at a very reasonable price. I usually end up with their chicken alfredo, which they call 'garlic chicken' or something like that, and always have enough left over for at least one meal, sometimes more!

Re: Mark's Place - 10/26/2016 06:26 PM

When I read about them being closed on Sundays I was surprised, too. I know we've eaten there on numerous Sundays but not sure if they were in December or April. We love to go there for lunch on Sundays and see all the island families coming in after church all dressed up and looking great as we sit there in our more casual attire.

Still haven't gotten there after 16 trips. What is good besides ribs? This will be the year. We will have four weeks to get there.

They are open on Sundays in April/May. Not sure about right now through.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/26/2016 07:40 PM

We eat there each trip and was just there a week & a 1/2 ago. Always consistent and always good. I don't know about Sundays.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/26/2016 08:15 PM

I'm not a fan of them myself, but many people have said the mussels are very good. Otherwise, it's burgers, as I said, alfredo chicken, sandwiches, comfort food. Great garlic bread too..

Re: Mark's Place - 10/26/2016 08:33 PM

They serve French fries with the mussels. We always sub pasta for the fries. Now that's a meal.

We always love the Chicken Creole.

EVERYTHING that they put out is delicious. I have had some of the Italian food there...lasagna, veal parm, etc...and it is BETTER than most of the fancy Italian restaurants mentioned here often....but priced under 15 bucks...and twice the size portions!!!!! Mark's Place, hands down, is probably one of the island's best kept secrets. Very casual.....inexpensive.....and GREAT service go a long way!!!!! They do a tremendous take out business also with the locals. A true hidden gem.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/27/2016 11:39 AM

We thought their lasagna & Chicken parm was far superior to Izi restaurant in Simpson Bay.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/27/2016 11:43 AM

We had take out from there this past Sunday which is the day they have their spinach mashed potatoes.

You mentioned this about two years ago here on TTOL and I took your suggestion and ordered the Veal Parm. BIG MISTAKE as it was awful. Worst meal of the trip. Everyone's tastes are different and I respect that but to say that Mark's is better than most of the Italian Restaurants on the island is incredulous .
Now I like Mark's Place for most of their menu items and will dine there again in a couple of weeks but NOT the Veal Parm.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/27/2016 07:08 PM

Sorry you had a bad meal. It wasn't me who mentioned it 2 years ago but someone else did here and I took their advice.

We live so close to the best Italian food in NE that we seldom eat Italian while on vacation. Locally, hubby has a specific place for Bolognase, another for Parm and so on. He had the Parm and said it was very good. I had the Lasagna which was far better than Izi's. At Izi's the sauce tasted like Campbells tomato soup.

only been to sxm about 5 times, have never seen Marks place,,,we are staying at Royal Palm,,,do I head towards Phillipsburg and possibly see it before going up the hill? Sorry I am not sure what people mean when they say the Cul-de-sac? Still getting to know the streets, etc. but sounds like a place I would like to try. Thanks

Re: Mark's Place - 10/27/2016 10:25 PM

No, if you're going toward P'burg, you go UP the hill and DOWN the hill, going sort of straight through the roundabout at the top of the hill (as opposed to turning right to go down into P'burg proper) and Mark's is at the roundabout at the bottom of the hill, right there by the Grand Marche.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/27/2016 10:36 PM

Actually, Meg - its in the Grand Marche parking lot and a part of the same building, I think..........

Totally separate building from Grand Marche, although it is at the end of a "strip mall" and share the parking lot.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/27/2016 11:45 PM

Thanx, Naked. I know exactly where it is but I couldn't recall if it was a seperate building or a part of the same one. Hi Carol,

Edie and I are doing well. We only get down to SXM once a year or so but still enjoy it. After spending 3 months in Florida each year, Edie like to enjoy our time at home as much as possible. It's hard to believe it's been 27 years and about 48 trips to SXM. A lot of good friend and good memories!

Anyone remember the old location in Cul de Sac? Is it still the same owner? Back then we would be there twice a week at least in January.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/28/2016 01:10 AM

Just got back from SXM and went to Mark's Place 3 times. Love the food , atmosphere, and the prices. Parking can be tricky but always find a spot.

Yes, I do remember, and yes it is the same owner.

O goodness - I sure do remember the original Marks Place but my question is: how did we ever find it in the first place? The roads and the signage were all so very bad.......and I remember making a reservation that first time - by getting out of the car and writing our names and preferred time and date in their reservation pad......those really were the days, my friends!

Oh, Yes! Our first experience with Mark's Place was on the French side!

Re: Mark's Place - 10/28/2016 11:31 AM

Hate to make this thread any longer but since Mark's Place has become our default restaurant when we are deciding where to eat, I will add that everything we have had there has been very good. Lisa plans to order the goat stew that others have raved about. I will pass on that and stick with a good steak or ribs.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/28/2016 12:01 PM

I have had a really good burger at Mark's also.

Re: Mark's Place - 10/28/2016 01:36 PM

How late are they open?

Is it open air or enclosed?

Thanks!

It is open air. As far as how late they are open, not super late, maybe 9:30 or 10?

Re: Mark's Place - 11/08/2016 05:37 PM

We have stayed at the Belair for almost 25 years for two weeks at a time, and just cant see going their because its attached to the Grand Marche parking lot...
Posted By: ruralcarrier

Re: Mark's Place - 11/08/2016 05:51 PM

Most restaurants are attached to some type of parking lot. It is a very good restaurant with decent prices, a nice selection of food and a loyal following, both local and tourist.

Re: Mark's Place - 11/08/2016 05:54 PM

I wonder--does every restaurant you go to in SXM have to have a view or be on the water? If so, then you have a point. If not, I see no difference between Mark's and, say, Temptation, which has no view of anything, and is right by the casino, or any one of dozens of other restaurants with no view. At least at Mark's, you don't actually SEE the cars and smell the car exhaust, like you do at The Palms. I refuse to go back to The Palms, because I feel like I am literally eating in the middle of the road there. At Mark's, once you get inside, you really don't have any idea where you are. It's not fancy cuisine, but just good food, and plenty of it, with good service. You should try it!

Re: Mark's Place - 11/08/2016 05:55 PM

Everyone has to do what works for them. A stop at Marks is always on our to-do list, and for sure, we're never disappointed in the food, the service and the prices. It's not high-end French gourmet but it's still good eating, and once you're inside, you forget all about the parking lot part, particularly in the evening.

Re: Mark's Place - 11/08/2016 07:07 PM

Carol, when we dine at The Palms we always eat indoors as we find the deck area is very close to the road. We do love the food and hospitality there. The Palms has received many food awards so perhaps you should give it another try and sit at the tables inside. We enjoy Mark's too,but not crazy about the location there either.
Posted By: Carol_Hill

Re: Mark's Place - 11/08/2016 07:37 PM

Elizabeth--sorry, the tables inside are just about as close to the road as the ones outside. And we were not particularly impressed with the food, for the PRICE, considering the (lack of) ambiance. I will not be back.

Re: Mark's Place - 11/08/2016 11:08 PM

We've also been going to Belair for 25+ years. We delayed going to Mark's Place for a few years for the same reason. I can only say that you are missing great food and fine service because of its location. The locals love it and so do we.

Re: Mark's Place - 11/09/2016 07:32 PM

I certainly do remember his original location and it was fantastic! It is the same kind Dutch gentleman with excellent food. Try the Snapper filets encrusted with toasted almonds! Amazing dinner with a salad, starch and veggie for $17.00.
