How are food allergies handled in restaurants?

How are food allergies handled in restaurants? - 03/28/2017 01:37 AM

I know you are all probably tired of my questions.......here it goes. My son has a severe peanut and tree nut allergy and I am wondering about eating at restaurants in SXM. Are there any restaurants that cater to people with allergies? I wanted to eat at Karakters but the fact that they have a peanut sauce is concerning. Cross contamination is a big deal. Do most restaurants take nut allergies serious like they do in the US? Any places I should definitely avoid? We ended up in the ER in the Bahamas once and hoping not to repeat that experience in SXM.

Hi, We went in July and my son brought his girlfriend that has so many allergies to so many foods. We were very specific every restaurant we went to and didn't have any issues. (thank god)

Just tell them ahead of time of what not to serve. That seems simple enough. I would imagine you can go anywhere, so long as you tell them of the what foods you do not want due to reaction...

I would be familiar with where medical facilities are and emergency numbers.

With many of the lolo type places you can watch the food go from the grill to the plate....skip the sides and you would be safe.

Good luck. Can't imagine the anxiety this would cause as a parent.

Yes and even more anxious for my son. He is very worried about cross contamination. Poor kid would rather not eat then take a chance. We may end up feeding him at the condo first so he can relax. I think that ambulance ride in the Bahamas when he was 3 scarred him for life! Most places in the US are very allergy friendly and luckily we never had an issue in Mexico. We were very familiar with the spanish words for peanut and tree nut. We even made him a landyard with a sign that said No cacahuates y nueces por favor. Then also explained in spanish that he could die if he consumed them. That way they knew how serious it is.
