Time’s running out......12/10/2020 - 12/11/2020 01:10 AM

Idle thoughts on our time so far........

What a gorgeous morning to awaken to but I can’t help thinking that three days from now the view will change drastically along with the climate. We could still sit out on our porch at home but I’m thinking maybe NOT! White beachsand vs white snow? 80s give way to 30s? And I’ll be back to wishing away my days to April.......

Not that it matters to us as visitors but does anyone ever notice how many cultures and nationalities are represented on this tiny little island? I don’t know the numbers or the ethnic breakdown but I’m always amazed and can’t help but wonder how so many different nationalities have ended up here and why this, over all the other places in the world they might have settle? And while in honesty, I don’t really recall seeing a lot of Chinese here, it is evident everywhere you look they play a huge part in SXM’s day to day living, and not just in the number and quality of Chinese restaurants. I happened to flip over a plate here in our villa the other day and I noted it was made by what sounded like a US company with a US email but the plate was marked ‘made in China’. So I started paying more attention and I’m amazed at the amount of trade items here that do come from China. No intentions on my part to make a political statement, for sure, but curious as to why/how I never noticed this before now. Or is this more a sign of the recent times? Anyone know?

We spent a very quiet day at the pool here at BSV. We had contemplated going to Mullet Beach earlier but other guests here told us they were just back and the waves were killer type today, thank you very much. We chose to pass. Lots of people leaving on Friday and then it’s our turn but I would like to get to Mullet myself this trip before we head back to the land of snowflakes and icicles.

And while I don’t have a lot of details, I just heard there was a shark attack fatality at Orient Beach today, and this after another shark was found dead earlier this week at Plum Bay. Of course we know there are sharks in the waters here but we’ve always been comfortable swimming in the ocean before. Perhaps we need to rethink this. The pool is looking better and better all the time.

And my yacht and the near islands are all back. Yay! Next big decision is dinner.

Last November we saw this new-to-us restaurant (or perhaps just a bar as we honestly didn’t know.....) called the Bodega in Jordan Village right next door to Barcode. We never got there but since then we’ve heard so many good things about it we were determined to give it a try this year and tonight was the night.
It was very good and I’m so glad we tried it. We each had apps - roasted Camembert cheese with apple slices and moules au gratin, both of which were yummy. John had another rib steak - 12 ounces nicely cooked which he said was delish and I had a seafood linguine dish - also very good. He had the floating island dessert and I had wine and when all done, with gratuity, our total check came to $105.00 and it was very much worth it.
As you drive by the place you don’t get the full picture of what its all about. It’s a full dining room, nicely done, with prerecorded music entertainment and it appears to be really catching on with the trendy young people of the island, but have no fear, they welcomed us old-timers, too. If we had more nights I would definitely return. ,So thank you, Kim Burns and Lesley Bruce, for the recommendations and so glad we followed your suggestions.

Thank you, Carol. I have enjoyed doing them but once my reality changes and I return to the land of ‘CHILLY’ I doubt the incentive for me to write or anyone out there to read will be greatly diminished.

Pat, I was told staff at Bodega were not wearing masks. Was that your experience?

BTW - there are about 110 different nationalities on the island!

Thanks for another update. Sounds like another good day. Enjoy your last one and hopefully you do get to Mullet Bay.

Now that I’m thinking about it, they did NOT have masks on. We wore ours in but once seated we removed them. The table seating was well distanced and even though you’re ‘indoors’ it’s very breezy and airy but no, I don’t think they were wearing masks. Woopse!!

Thank you for the update Pat. I've enjoyed the daily reads and will be sorry to see them end. I'm sure, you'll be even more sorry to not be able to write them. Like Kim said, brace yourself. Just saw our forecast for next week. Quite the difference from what you've been accustomed to the last couple of weeks. Enjoy every minute you have left. So glad you and John are having such a wonderful time.

Lesley - maybe you want to let the owner know that now two people have mentioned that the staff is NOT wearing the masks.

Leslie - have you been there? This is the second person I know who have said no masks are worn by staff. Eyewitnesses.

I almost missed this one.

I know it is sad coming home, especially to this weather, but today wasn't too bad.
Now I have to check next weeks, since it was mentioned--yup snow!!

The restaurant sounds good, I'm getting hungry reading about it.
If it is owned by Jules, I'm sure it is!! I love his pastry and his coffee is soo good.

Hopefully, we will all be able to get our vaccines by the next trip!!!
