Miscellaneous observations - 03/15/2021 02:42 PM

Two of the three pelicans at the airport roundabout are already repaired. This morning, two metalworkers are repairing pelican #3. The work is happening on site.

The workers at the ugly skyscrapers at Mullet Bay Beach (now called "Fourteen at Mullet Bay") have finished pouring concrete on Tower #1. It has reached 21 stories. It's dreadful. It looks like work is proceeding on the foundation hole for Tower #2.

On Sunday, the beach at Club Orient had lots of sargassum. Cedric was cheerful and upbeat as usual. Visitors were few, and when the Happy Hour bell was rung at 1:30, there was no line at the Perch. People approached the bar one at a time. The Perch still makes one of the best mahi mahi burgers on the island.

The Cupecoy beach near Shore Pointe has had no sand at all for the last few days.

Ocean temperatures are cooler than normal. The ocean has been calm, however, the last couple of days.

Porto Cupecoy has two empty commercial spaces where restaurants used to be (on the right side of the fountain, beyond Altro). Rendezvous, Altro, and Mama Pizza are still in business, as well as a new smaller takeout restaurant that appears to have few customers.

On Pelican Beach, the hurricane-ravaged resort to the left of Simpson Bay Resort (Flamingo) is now spruced up and appears to have guests. Reconstruction work is ongoing, but the exterior painting is done.

The beach in front of Divi Resort has very few people on it on Saturday. It would appear that the resort is 2/3 empty, but that's just a guess.

There was live music (Connis Vanterpool & Betti V) at Karakter's on Friday night.

If you're referring to Flamingo they just had grand opening last week and is 99% complete other that some final projects like installing palapas.

thanks for the note. I was wondering if someplace has taken the place of Mario's. It sounds not, from your note.

I think the resort you are referring to is Flamingo. If so, surprised that they are still working there. I thought it was done.

Glad to hear the pelicans are about done.

Remaining work at Flamingo appears to be at the snack bar at the corner of the building.

No , Carol there's no replacement for Mario's at Porto Cupecoy. Steve's is the new take out place there. There's another place on right side next to Mama's Pizza that appears to be another Italian place.

No nothing is in place of Mario's. The take out named Steve's is just before you go down the stairs to the water.

Enter Porto Cupecoy

Casino on left across from guard shack followed by Carrefore. Parking lot at right, stairs ahead then

Right side: Rendezvous, then a retail store, Altro restaurant, then where Mario's was. Ernest something or other is gone

Left side: clothing store, another Italian place (used to be orential foods) then Mama's Pizza.

Straight ahead is a kiosk serving take out.

Downstairs another place that wasn't open the Sunday we were there. Not sure if anything is in there.

Nothing ever seems to last too long in the old Mario’s location at Porto Cupecoy. We ate in that spot once as Il Bateau Ivres and another time as Le Moulin Fou Steakhouse, both before Mario’s and I’m trying to recall if there was one other restaurant in that spot or not. The front corner table is wonderful when the moon is full and there’s a gentle breeze blowing. The sounds of the rope hardware clanking on the masts of the sailboats below is like a lullaby.
