A Fun and Unique Experience in Marigot

A Fun and Unique Experience in Marigot - 02/24/2022 09:43 PM

We have gained a new appreciation for cheese! My wife and I have traveled to St. Martin many times and we really thought that there was nothing new for us to discover there; were we ever wrong. I am so glad we stumbled upon Le Comptoir des Fromages in Marigot. We spent an evening with Geraud where we learned everything from the history and science of cheese to how to properly cut, serve and taste cheese and of course what wines best compliment the different kinds of cheese . Geraud is very knowledgeable and his presentation was really engaging. We can't wait to continue our exploration of cheese, and wine, thanks to this enlightening evening. Not to be missed!

I like that they will come to your Villa and do the presentation as well. Muffinmn58 did they let you keep any unfinished wine or cheese?

Yes! We tried 9 very different cheeses from several different regions in France and he sent us home with pieces of all 9. We had great tastings for the next couple days. It was wonderful.

The purpose of the experience is to educate. He explained that cheese is his passion and that the French (and most Europeans) are much more interested in their food than us. The French will gather and have a 4-hour dinner and talk about nothing else but the food. We learned that there are over 1,000 varieties of French cheese categorized into 8 styles from 20 regions within France. We sampled 9. We learned about why certain cheeses are made in certain regions and not others. With regard to the wine question, we learned the importance of pairing a wine and a cheese that both come from the same region so that the taste and flavor profiles complement each other. We learned the importance of how you cut cheese and that cheese is never served with a cracker - either alone or with a piece of fresh baguette. And that the cheese course is traditionally between the main course and dessert. Really fascinating stuff if you are a foodie.

Their website says they also offer lunch: either all cheese or cheese & cold cut with a salad and glass of wine.

Delightful---beach all day, perfume making in Grand Case, wine tasing at Baccus and now cheeses in Marigot. What more could one ask for.
