Here's one I took last year. Apart from the glaring hint in the flag flag flying atop this residence, I can say that the view when turned around 180° and looking uphill is much more spectacular.
OK I'll start. Germany and blue and white flag means Bavaria?
Neueswanstine? No idea how to spell it.
EllenS - This is indeed in Germany, and you were very astute to see the non-standard Bavarian flags; the checkered blue-white pattern is far more prevalent.
Carol - While Neuschwanstein is in Bavaria, it is a very long way from this picture's location and it was built by crazy King Ludwig. This location is much older. European Royal families intermarry quite bit and this location has lots of roots to royalty in such countries as Russia, Belgium and even Great Britain.
OK, that's the only castle we went to, other than Herrenchemse (which I'm sure that's not correct spelling either), so I got nothing!
I'm hoping that nobody answers in the next couple of hours. I have a really nice picture that I took of the object behind the camera; a telephoto night shot. Even without Google! that should clinch it considering the audience here. If not, I'll add some written clues.
Back to game 4
Great Hint EllenS with the song! It blew right past me.
LOVE IT!
No guess from me, my depth of knowledge of German castles is pretty thin.
I'll wait for the picture.
Germany has a bunch of Castles!
I think it was the one North of Nuremberg
But I cannot remember the town
Was working in Nuremberg and one free day we just drove around looking at the country side
Cannot wait to see the night shot!
So? Zanshin, you were looking for the name of the castle? Or the name of the town? Of course, I don't know if Bremen is the town or not..
Just a guess of a place in Germany
sleepychef - No, not Bremen (the highest elevation around Bremen is the local landfill, no hills and no castles there)
Here's a picture taken from across the town, the location where the first picture was taken is just off the bottom right of this one. This is the original fortified castle, the first picture is of the "habitable" castle that they built and moved into to avoid the drafts and long walk up the hill

The name of the town is good enough for me, once someone guesses it.
Das Schloss Ehrenburg in Coburg?
18 hour still the rule for googling? I have a guess....
18 hours is up - go for it
Fortress Marienberg, Wurzburg?
The next picture goes to xrayman67 - the first picture is indeed the Schloss Ehrenburg in Coburg, Germany. Queen E. the first stayed in the 2nd floor centre room on that picture. Queen Victoria of England's hubby came from Coburg, as did the first king of Belgium and the Saxe-Coburg family sent their three daughters to the Tzar of Russia so he could choose one of them

The place has a lot of history and I'm currently in quarantine here - I see that castle from my front door
I'll give this a try!
"Das Schloss Ehrenburg in Coburg?"
I guess I should not have guessed in german 😅
xrayman67 are we in Switzerland 🇨🇭?
Italy is straight south of Switzerland but I'm leaning towards Spain for some reason.
You may find a cannoli there!
Quick look at a "paper map" I'll guess.....Sardinia?
Not Sardinia, but on a slightly larger island. Italy, yes.
Sicily, yes! And very close to Italy's "big toe".
Corleone....now the music is in my head
Corleone....now the music is in my head
Farther east.
Sleepy chef, you got it!
"The Bell Tower of the Cathedral of Messina"
Beautiful port town
An easy guess for first time players
Funny thing, today I decided to return to searching out my ancestry and the surname of my fathers side dates back to the Norman Conquest of 1066...thus our heavy English dna. I have to guess at this pic, because honestly it could be anywhere, even at a Minnesota Vikings tailgate party!! ha! I'll start with Norway?
Fred was much closer but Vikings didn't really make it to Scotland
TomB - I'm sorry I missed your post!!! Ich bitte vielmals um Entschuldigung, das wird nicht nochmal passieren.
I started looking at the thread from the bottom up rather than from the top down, hence missed your guess. I see that the thread has progressed since then - sorry.
Guess it’s not so easy
I’ll go with a parade in Iceland.
Lower and to the east, its part of Scotland but you wouldn;t know it if you asked a local
I think the time is up and I believe the guy is part of the Romans Return to Vindolandia near Bardon Mill and Hadrian's Wall
you have moved further away.
My son was born here and it moves UK public holidays around to suit this festival
Based on one clue, it seems Shetland Island folks may not consider themselves part of Scotland - at least sometimes.
They truly don't Fred I was shocked and shunned when I wore my Kilt up there for Up HellyA in Lerwick, Shetland. They also move UK Public holidays around so they can hold the festival on a Tuesday & Wednesday recovery day.
TomB - I'm sorry I missed your post!!! Ich bitte vielmals um Entschuldigung, das wird nicht nochmal passieren.

No worries my friend. I have had plenty of pics to post. I was just teasing you

I figured that is what happened
I know at least one player will get this immediately.
We've already had this location in an earlier competition Fred

The wonderful Isles des Saintes, Guadeloupe. Can't see Jeannius there. Have you been more than once?
Need to go back....
We had a wonderful week in Saint-François, Guadeloupe
We too would love to return also
Tom Saint-Francois is way in the background in this pic. Your pic reminds me of how calm the water was one night for us, no wind and unfortunately we didn't have gen a/c. I would give anything to be sweating in this bay today!
Mike,
I didn't get in on the beginning so I missed it along with St. Helena and even my own hometown. I was on Skyelark on this trip which is the blue monohull in the right center and in addition to Jeannius, I've been there with Cap'n Rick on Sophisticated Lady.
Tom,
You were bypassed earlier, so go ahead and post a picture while I go back and see what has been used previously.
I realised afterwards that it must have been much later than our trip as the mooring balls are a more recent enhancement.
You'll recognise the person in the next photo if not the location...
Jean yes, but location I haven't a clue.
Jean yes, but location I haven't a clue.
That's good, I was worried you might have been there.
Good guess Ellen but not correct. No clues yet
I'm stuck on it being a volcano, Mt Etna.
It is a volcano as Ellen guessed. Not Canary Islands, Mt Etna. It is an island. I know I have a suitable clue photo somewhere but that'll have to keep for tomorrow,
They don't let you get this close on Monserrat...
![[Linked Image]](http://www.sailbvi.net/images/P1010963.jpg)
Not much in the way of Health & Safety control around here. Still, they haven't lost a tourist yet
Lack of rules, I'm going South Pacific. But without google, I am at a loss.
How about the Galapogos, I am grasping at Straws,
Here's a notice that was on the board at the custom house when we cleared in. Should help narrow down the location...
Correct Tom. The island of Tanna.
The volcano is continually erupting at a low level and they will take you right up on to the rim. There was a more violent eruption about 20 years ago which resulted in the fresh water lake in the island centre emptying into the sea. The next photo is the former lake bed covered in ash...

It is amazing Ellen
Diane... Tonga was a good guess. In fact, when I was searching for photos, I went to our Tonga folder first of all as I was convinced it was Tonga, not Vanuatu
From Petecost where they learn to bungee jump hardcore
Very cool photos! Thanks!
Very cool Mike,
I was trying real hard to find one !! I do remember you saying your very favorite part of the SP was the marquesas though? Do i have that right?
Hi Diane... Yes, the part we enjoyed the most was the Marquesas and the next island group west, the Tuamotu Archipelago. We would have enjoyed Fiji, Tonga and Vanuatu far more but we had loads of boat problems around there. The electrical part of the generator was repaired in Fiji but they made a complete mess of it and while we were on the way to Tonga and Vanuatu, the crankshaft broke on the generator engine, presumably as a result of the electric bit being badly reinstalled. So we were in the tropics in very hot and humid conditions with no generator, and therefore no air-conditioning, until we got to Australia. So we didn't enjoy that part of the trip as much we would have if all had been well with the boat.
Well what port are we heading into now?
Well that was quick! xrayman67 nailed it!
We were lucky to make the transit aboard my son's ship at the time up the Savannah River. Even better watch him get promoted with the city in the background. Savannah is a great place to visit.
![[Linked Image]](https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bqe6D39vWJg/X05cZVGCmjI/AAAAAAAAGqg/P2la3QCN75sLsK83T19GV02JqcKGCwU3QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1024/Eagle.jpg)
xrayman67 you are up
You broke your own rule TomB by leaving the Georgia Flag in plain view
Haha... I was so buy erasing the name off the back of the tug that I did not notice the the flags on the stern
Flags also disappeared on a bunch of buildings.
Sometimes look past what is in the front of your face.
I think xrayman67 has probably got it. I've got photos of a tug that looks just like the one in the photo (except with more rust) and also photos of the gold dome.
I see I'm too late! Spent too long looking at my photos.
Tom, you can go again if you would like. Seems like I owe you one for the Ehrenburg Castle. I actually didn't notice the flag, but the Brunswick guess by sleepychef got me to thinking Georgia!
Thanks xrayman67
This one should go quick, but I bet not many folks have been here and a lot more have seen it
I have been here as per my first guess of the game so will leave it for someone else
I don't know it, but I like it. I like all the shapes and angles. Almost seems like the Who (as in Dr Suess) village of sorts.
xrayman - nope not Portugal
I figured sleepychef had been here thanks for letting it slide today... ironically it is Tuesday
EllenS - good observation, but I wanted to keep with the Coast Guard theme from my last post.
Then it has to be Malta? I remembered Malta becasue my daughter spent a summer there (I didn't) and always wanted to go.
Yes, Ellen you are correct!
Sweethaven Village or Popeye’s Village in Malta was the location for the Popeye movie with Robin Williams.
The set was left standing and it became a tourist attraction.
It has become so popular that a few years ago the original set burned down and they rebuilt it.
Yes, Popeye was in the USCG
“I would gladly pay you on Tuesday for a hamburger today” Whimpyyour up EllenS
So where did we enjoy this?
Yup, but where in Bavaria. I was so sure you were going to tell me you worked here...
Ellen I found it....waiting until 0830 to google answer ha!!
Just recognise the beer...
Orlando, FL
We went for the famous castles and found this as well.
I think so. Nothing about maps in the rules just google.
I thought this one would be easier. Anyone who gets close wins
would it be very close to the grounds of Schloss Neuschwanstein
(Neuschwanstein Castle)
Well, as far as maps, I guess they are OK to consult if it's a paper map and not online!!! That would be my take on it. No online maps, as that seems like google to me.
Ok give it to Tom. We were on top of Tegelberg via cable car watching the kites jump off. Very close to the castles. Village of Schwangau. I think I spelled it correctly.
Tom you are up.
well here is a new port of call we have not visited in the game
First timeI ever went sailing I sailed through the Corinth Canal
sleepychef has brought us to the right region, but not the right place...
I have to ask... it must have been hard to tack in the Corinth Canal
No I know where it is , I was giving a clue. Lol engine all the way after the light went green and the bridge dissapeared uder the water .
We were in a lil 36ft sailboat called Megabucks brought out of Split due to the war and it lost its crew a few days before coming into Bari due to a force 9 storm. I was hitch hiking heading to Corfu but should of been in Brendisi , standing in the queue to buy a ferry ticket and a Captain just strolls up to me and asked me iwhere I was going, then informed me I was in the wrong port and then asked me if I had sailed before, i responded in the positive( didn't mention it was the ferry going to Arran) and away I went with my 2 travel companions on our firt sailing adventure!
Luvin the stories with these photos!
For all you mythology fans this location is named for the son of Poseidon and the father of Palamedes
(BTW... I am not a mythology fan and I had to look the clue up)
and I wait until 1600hr to place my guess.....;-)
With every guess comes a clue
Not Hint - But just for info...
The little islet in the center of the harbor had multiple purposes.
On the far side of it one barely make out a sandbar.
Invading ships must come through the near side
A heavy chain stretched between the islet and the wharf
Hence ripping off the bottom of unwanted ships
The Islet also served as the home of the city's executioner, and is where he preformed his duties.
In the lower right corner (not shown well) is how we entered the harbor. Beautiful Motor/Sail
Raise your hand if you know where the Argolic Gulf is located...
And you will be that much closer
I'm in Greece, but the chain story through me to Constinatinople. So bottome line I'm lost.
An ancient village is nearby and much more famous , well to me anyway as this is as far as we sailed before heading to Marmaris
EllenS - definitely stay in Greece
Head to Porto Heli and take a right North
There are also sorts of things and places to see in the region if you like antiquity.
But I found my best meal in Greece in this small city
And then I walked the 999 steps
18 hours are up!
Google is legal
sleepychef has shown great patience
and also provided some pretty good clues
are you visiting Palamidi Castle, Nafplio?
and Beerman stole it !!! Well done
and Beerman stole it !!! Well done
Thank you for your patience!! Like sleepychef I've been known to hitch a ride....where was I?
The Beerman is Up!
I loved this city!
I had the most fun in Nafplio and on the island of Kythnos on our Greece trip.
I do not think either are in the top places to see in Greece
Maybe that is why I liked them
Doesn’t it say St John on the back walk?
I see St Ohn......but where on St Ohn??
I knew it wouldn’t last long, but I miss that island especially the quiet side. They painted over that mural years ago unfortunately. It sits by the Moravian church. Go Toast!!
I was just in St John beginning of August, was heavenly, despite it still being 2020...lol.
Here goes, my first choice I deleted was too obscure. This one was my Son's only request to visit on our vacation in 2016....
Not even one guess? I will give a hint, on the continent of Europe.......
Is this a statue of Icarus?
Don't fly too close to the sun! Is it in France?
It is not in France and has very little to do with the "Sun" ...
Hint, good thing this statue is actually in a "fountain"......
Toast - would it be a fallen angel that vive en España
I am almost 99.9% it is near the Crystal Place in Madrid.
Our hotel last year was about a 1/2 mile away and we spent lots of time walking in the parks and botanical gardens
Tom B you have it correct, the fallen Angel in Retiro park right by the Crystal Palace, I thought the fountain clue would help.
YOu are it!
ps, I wasn't thirlled that the number one thing my son wanted to find was a statue of the devil.....
just read it sits 666 feet above sea level...eeeeesh
Well folks have you ever had a rum punch in this location
I don't recognize it, but I'm guessing maybe USVI?
Carol,
Nope not the USVI
Special place when the moon is right!
Nope xrayman it is not in the BVI either
The picture I posted was pre-hurricane Irma
However the facility has been rebuilt - looks better, but still the same
Actually never been there myself, but is it Bankie Banx bar?
Carol, That's a great guess. i was going to say somewhere in the Grenadines.
I think I've been there and it is on Anguilla. Can't remember the name though.
Anguilla is where Bankie Banx's joint is. I think Carol was correct.
I think I need to put it on the list, looks fun.
Carol is indeed correct!
It is Bankie Banx's Dune Preserve on Anguilla
I have spent some real quality time there!
Home of Moon Splash festival the largest music festival in the Caribbean
Moon Splash 2007I had to laugh Mike when you said I could not remember the name...
maybe you had the other punch ;(
All righty then! First one I've gotten right in some time! Have a couple of pictures I'm thinking about...
Well, shoot, the picture I wanted is at home, I guess.
So, this one should be easy!
Sort of, and not the name of the glacier. The name of the body of water.
I had to laugh Mike when you said I could not remember the name...
maybe you had the other punch ;(
Ah, that explains it!
Looking online now I can see from the location that I have indeed been there. Also Gwen's on the other coast. I remember Gwen's as I left pretty soon after arriving due to the miserable staff and poor service. That was probably 12-15 years ago so worth another visit for the location if nothing else.
No way! i did not know that...
I think Alaska also, we saw Portage Glacier?, but it was smaller than that
I had to laugh Mike when you said I could not remember the name...
maybe you had the other punch ;(
Ah, that explains it!

Mike,
The times we have been there it has really never been crowded enough to worry about service or really did not care because we were going to be there for a while.
Sundays are great afternoons to be at the Dune Preserve - Bankie has Sunday School.
Local Players take the stage and Bankie normally joins them for a few songs.
I cannot take too much sun anymore so Janet hangs on the beach and I do the shade in the Dune Preserve.
I am not real fond of the monkey that hangs around, but it is has been awhile since I was there - maybe he is gone.
If you can, a great day to be on Anguilla is their Independence Day, which is May 30th.
I would definitely plan my next trip to be on AXA that day.
Just fun and a great sail race. Here are some shots from the day
Anguilla eXcellent Adventure - Race Day
No guesses on the body of water? Almost the most famous body of water on Alaskan cruises..
I had to laugh Mike when you said I could not remember the name...
maybe you had the other punch ;(

Ellen--nope. Much further north!
Gulf of Alaska, Prince William Sound
College Fjord, accessed by Gulf of Alaska
Ellen got it!! Glacier Bay! You're up, Ellen!
Keeping in the water theme.
Well, how 'bout the obvious...

Lake Norman?
Lake Norman is a tad flatter. Sunrise on the lake about a year ago.
I’ve traveled between Reno and Sacramento a few times and like it there, I like lake Norman too! Ellen or somebody else please post a pic in my place, Unfortunately I can’t post one tonight.
Someone else can go that has one ready!
I'll jump in quickly, as I might not get another chance. What city was this picture taken in. Rather than clues to this picture, I have several more pictures taken around this city which will certainly suffice for a positive identification.
I'm going to guess London. This is based on the single Native American (is that the correct term, I can't keep up) Pocahontas perhaps, surrounded by old British type architecture in the foreground and then modern cranes building stuff in the background. If I'm wrong then I haven't a clue!
Mike - No, this is not in Londinium of anywhere along the Thames. But the city is within the boundaries of what was once the Great Roman Empire
I'm in my home-office today and am bored, so I'm adding another picture from the same town, this one taken relatively close to where the first one was taken. For some reason the forum software won't allow me to add a picture to the previous post, hence this new one.
The mural is an interesting perspective of time. At least a thousand years.
Second photo looks Italian.
Milan?
Definitely Spain as Ellen says because of the red and yellow signs in one shop and the Spanish language in the second photo. So I'm going to guess this is something to do with Christopher Columbus. Beyond that I'm stuck as I can't remember which ports he sailed from or to.
Though Christopher Columbus says Portugal to me, so I'm going out on a limb, even with the Spanish language, and saying Lisbon.
(Glad I blacked-out certain portions of the pictures)

Here's one more picture from the city. The picture after that will will probably give it away...
OK, one more before I post the spoiler:
Sleepychef - you've got it. I was going to post this picture, which might have given it away

I was in Nantes to visit the Jeanneau factory, just outside of town in Les Herbiers, to see my boat while it was being constructed. See
Zanshin Factory Tour for details
WAIT A SECOND - You changed your post from "Nantes" to "France" - that's not right!
Wow i thought i was off but knew the country, so it was Nantes
Ok this should be easy as most have been here, I think.
Fred, your too good! We have a winner
El Morro in San Juan? Not sure where Fort Morro is?
I hope this isn't another repeat on my part.
No, but it has something in common with Montserrat.
Nevis? Not certain, you normally see Nevis from the St Kitts point of view.
I think I better get everyone out of the Caribbean and this picture should do it.
Well, we have covered Mt Etna before
Who cares about the game--d*mn that pizza looks GOOD!!!
Well, we have covered Mt Etna before
I don't remember Etna coming up before. Fred may not know if it did, he started late.
Carol - I agree about the pizza and it was the best. I did not go to the top of Aetna or Vesuvius, but I did take this picture at the top of ? You hike up late day and watch the "fireworks" after dark. I only show these recent college graduates to show their attire as a clue - especially the helmets.
I'll let this go until Google time before giving an easy clue.
Got it now, I think. Of course it isn't Etna, that's on the rather large island of Sicily. So, these photos must be Stromboli?
Mike, you got it
Thanks Fred. Stromboli can be really impressive at times. We were on holiday in the south of Sardinia and one evening could hear these tremendous explosions. When asking the hotel staff where they were coming from they said Stromboli. I couldn't believe it as it is nearly 300 miles but they had no reason to lie so I suppose it must have been true.
Now to find a photo...
![[Linked Image]](http://www.sailbvi.net/images/CB-20120907-00073.JPG)
You have to be really precise on the location of this one. Not quite as precise as 'the bow of Jeannius' but not just the general area.
Appears to be an American flag and some tall buildings in the far background so a wild guess is on the outskirts of New York City.
Close Fred. I knew it wouldn't be long before someone recognised NYC. That's why I want a bit more

Another view of the same location...
Hi. IF that is confirmed as the correct answer, please start a new thread.
Thanks!
No, sorry. Can't believe the only person who's been to this place in NYC is a Brit!
Right there in Manhattan, a city owned marina. The only place you can park your boat for less than about $1000/night,
Sleepy chef worked there😂
I live within a few miles of this location, on the Jersey side, but I'm just not familiar with the marina. Is that the 79th Street Boat Basin? The tall cylindrical building in the background is called Stonehenge.
Dan
That's it Dan. The winner.
A really great place right there in Manhattan where 6 of of us stayed for around $100/night. It's gone up a but since we stayed but still only $3.50/foot/night. Must be the cheapest way to stay in Manhattan...
https://www.nycgovparks.org/facilities/marinas/10
Good one Mike! Kinda funny that I've never been there, so I had to rely on the background.
I'll start a new thread.
Dan
Thanks, Dan! This one was kind of long.
