So where are we, and can you identify the island off in the distance? I thought this was a very relaxing photo for hump day.
Well darn Carol, that didn’t last long at all. Carol is correct, your up! I guess it goes without saying then as to where I am, lol!
SXMFox--are you on SXM now???
The picture looked to be from a villa above Dawn Beach, and I know you can see St. Barts from there.
Much darker place than SXMFox's photo..
Because of your word choice, I'll guess Dachau?
EDIT--Fred, sorry, got my pictures mixed up, what was where. You are correct!!!
sleepychef--sorry, Fred was correct. I screwed up!
I hate to say it Carol, but no. That was pre Irma, and yes just above dawn beach, lovely view. Sadly that villa along with a couple more on that corner are totally gone including their foundations. It’s amazing as large and as well built as those homes were, that there gone. So sad.
Wow, that's sad. That picture must be really bittersweet for you..
Well I've spent a few hours trying to cover up a name and finally gave up and am using another picture. If someone knows an easy way to "erase" a name, flag, etc. please advise. Meantime, where is this?
I think Corsica but don't know the name of the town, so who does?
Sleepychef, Corsica is correct and the town is Bonifacio. You are up.
Well I've spent a few hours trying to cover up a name and finally gave up and am using another picture. If someone knows an easy way to "erase" a name, flag, etc. please advise. Meantime, where is this?
Fred... Really easy to erase parts of an image if you are using a Windows PC. Just use the ancient Paint application and the Eraser Tool as shown in the image below. If you are using one of those weird Apple devices I'm sure there is something similar.
P.S> I knew Bonifacio. Always wanted to sail into there as the entrance looks magnificent. Haven't yet had the opportunity.
Thanks Mike, it's a PC so I'll try your suggestion. I figured you had sailed to Bonifacio.
Hi Fred, lets see the next picture with your editing please.
Your pictures are better
OK, Peter here is the one I hoped to use but gave up trying to cover up a giveaway name. Guess I'll see if it took and where is it?
I was thinking Pompeii too, but that seemed too obvious. I am going to say Africa. No clue if there are any there, but I think it is off the beaten track.
I've seen that amphitheater before but racking my brain as to where.
Fred--You know, when I first saw that picture, I went to myself "Self, what is that purple blob on the stage??"

Looks like an amazing venue, but I have no idea where it is.
Not Pompeii but same country. Where is it Fran?
Carol, that was my first attempt at painting out a name-not much different than my home paint jobs.
go south from Freds last picture
Taorimino Sicily
(Post win comment...visited on a cruise stop in the early 1980s)
jphart, you are correct and you are up for a picture.
![[Linked Image]](http://www.traveltalkonline.com/gallery/38/full/6666.jpeg)
Sorry for the size, I still haven’t figured out why sometimes the uploads are thumbnails, other are so big😗
But size is a future hint.
He Stands in front of the Golden Gate at this seaside city.
Karl der Grosse (Charlemagne) usually carries a sword, and his home is Aachen. This statue looks like that of a scholar, and that globus cruciger looks Romanesque. Is this somewhere in Italy?
<heureka> I once read Gibbon's "Decline and fall of the Roman Empire" and remembered friends talking about another "Golden Gate" which isn't in California, so the location seemed to be evident - but my curiosity got the best of me and I had to google a reference in the book and that wiki page contained a picture of that statue! So now I need to wait for the timer to run out (how many hours is that?)
The cross on his head shows a religious relationship dating more than 1,000 years ago. So Arnd is correct about Roman influence
Statue erected 1929, later moved to present location. Besides the Golden Gate, there are three other gates to the palace in this city - all named for precious metals.
How about a seaside German city?
What was the Google-rule? How many hours?
I think it is currently 18 hours. If I calculate correctly that's about 5:30 pm in the US Eastern time zone. Seems like there were many more people participating when that rule was made so maybe moderator TomB might consider reducing the Google rule time?
No reason to reduce the time rule - every thread dies a natural death. But I am jumping up-and-down like a kid waiting for his/her birthday to start so that I can post the answer...
Arne, if Somebody gets it before I return go ahead and make the award winner. I’m off-line for the next four hours or so. Next hint, he is Gregory of Nin but there is no throne In this game.
What city?
Your splitting hairs Zanshin...
I think XRayman posted a picture just up from here surprised he hasn't guessed yet.
biding my time for the next couple of hours
18 hours. Not quite up yet.
I see it posted last night 7:25pm eastern....so 1:25pm eastern today...who will be the first to click in 1 hour 55minutes??? ;-)
Beerman, mine said 11:25 Eastern and that's how I came up with 5:25 pm. Is my time set wrong somehow?
Carol can you clarify on the time differences please
Right country, wrong city...
It's 18 hours from when the poster first posted. I need to think a minute about what happens when the poster and the reader are on different time zones. I don't think it should matter though... Thinking about it.
Beerman--I am almost certain you are correct, as to the correct time in this instance, 1:25 PM. I think Fred's clock has to be set incorrectly.
Fred--your clock should state the current time where YOU are. Are you on East Coast time? I don't think so. You need to look on the time zone settings and find the city which has the same time zone as you. For me, mine is New York City..
xrayman67 - yes, you've guessed it correctly. Split is grown around emperor Diocletian's retirement home
Here's the next photo!
Not Dubrovnik
But this character was involved in language.
Carol,
My dock now reads 1:45 pm EST. It says your post was 1 hour ago or 12:45 ish to me.
Is this correct?
What time do you have for jphart's first post on the statue?
East Coast time is Eastern DAYLIGHT time right now. Are you on Eastern Standard time? As I'm typing this post, the time is 2:24 PM Eastern Daylight time.
I'm going with a French palace, how's that for vague?
Precisely the time I have (within a minute now). I'm on same time as you.. It is still EDT
I'm going with a French palace, how's that for vague?
Not a French palace.
Split. splitting hairs, sorry!
My place
Yes, it was Split Croatia. Guess y'all missed the Palace and Game of Thrones hint?
For xraymans post:
I see peacocks...Iran?
Smallest country in the world, St Peters
On a technically, Sleepychef got it with St. Peters. This is the Court of the Pine Cone in Vatican City at the entrance to St. Peter's. The statue was cast in the 1st-2nd century. Sleepychef, you're up!
you always remember places with your own name.
easy one , i always say that but this 1 is.
Even though I've never been to that location there are a lot of clues - from the cloud base height and topography to the big parking garages and tour bus station. Right-Hand traffic and pickups on the parking preclude Europe. So I'm going to take a big guess at Florida and randomly choose Universal Studios...
I think Zanshin nailed it
I think not although he is close. I know where it is but since I worked for that company over 22 years and went into the area more times than I care to count I'll let someone else guess.
Not Universal but seems to be the place where Fran used to work, and Fran will know where I took the photograph from
If it's not Universal, I would say Disney World, which is 40 minutes from my house--and to which I have never been either!!
If that would happen to be correct, someone else go, as I am going to be offline for several hours, and I don't have any pictures ready to go anyway.
Not Universal but seems to be the place where Fran used to work, and Fran will know where I took the photograph from
Yup, sure do.
Fran, I've been waiting for a picture from you and since Carol declined, please post one.
Ok Fred, I'll try this again. By the way, sleepychef's photo it Downtown Disney, now known as Disney Springs and was take from the balloon attraction. The long rectagular building in the center distance is Team Disney, the FL headquarters.
If this picture works it might be pretty easy.
Yay, it worked. Also in sleepychefs photo, the round dome building is Planet Hollywood.
Turns out I have to leave for a couple of hours also. If anyone knows for sure that the correct answer has been given please feel free to carry on.
Sorry I have been AWOL
I am still in favor of the 18 hour google rule.
The original intent of the game was to share locations and places visited with the community (world wide).
I know most that are active in the game are in the US, but to give equal chance for those who live in Hawaii or Spain a time limit is required.
Remember using Google, Reverse Image Search, or reading the GPS information of the photo posted defeats the purpose of the game.
It is to take a journey to the destination with them through hints, stories, and additional pictures which keeps the game going.
Yes that makes it harder on the person that post the pic, but in doing so you take everybody along on your experience.
Unfortunately, it appears we are headed towards another lock down or more restrictions on movement due to the germ...so there is no need to get in hurry - we ain't going anywhere.
Of course that it just my input.
Tom, I'm good with all that and thanks again for starting this adventure.
Fran, I'll guess King's Mountain?
Beerman has the right city so I guess that would make him the winner. Do you know what the location is?
"Gettysburg National Cemetery"? I have a picture of my dad when he was maybe 10 standing there
Tom--I think most people agree with the Google rule. And yes, thanks for starting this adventure!!
Beerman is correct. The monument in the center is the site of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
Sorry for the wait.......where were we?.......
Continental Europe, but no buildings, mountains behind it. Rick's photography is always great.
But is the background photoshopped of details?

I don’t think TomB has a rule about that?
Not photoshopped. I did a spot edit to remove a flag on the dome and 2 shields on the gates
Les Invalides, Paris is correct!! Time didn't allow us to go into the Musee de l’Armee or see Napoleon's tomb, maybe next time!
Zanshin you are up!!
I'll remain on the topic of grand buildings.
I worked in this location for a year, and this picture was taken on my daily walk to work; my hotel was on the other side of this edifice and right up next to the walls in a building as old as this one. Fortunately, the plumbing had been modernized...
Holy Moly someone stole the flag 😉
Would this castle be on the Neckar River?
Hello TomB - although I use Adobe Lightroom to manage my images and have Adobe Photoshop, I used MS-Paint to hide the flag

. This isn't on the Neckar River, here's a picture taken from the same location looking 180° from the first.
Got to be England somewhere with the castle and those pedal boats
I got that bike for the equivalent of $15 and rode it around all over the place, including this location located in the same town, but a different body of water. And this time I used photoshop to obfuscate the writing on the building.
Stratford on the Avon or Stratford upon Avon
never know which one is right
Wow! That’s one narrow lock
TomB: No, this is not the home of that famous Bard, although you do have the correct country.
jphrart: These are called "narrowboats" for a reason. I almost bought one so that I could tour the country at a leisurely walking pace. Here's that double-lock when filled.

Where I live in Worcester is on the River Severn, right by where the Worcester to Birmingham Canal joins the Severn. That narrow boat is from the Alvechurch Boat Company, which is based about 15 miles up the canal. However, the canal isn't the Worcester - Birmingham as the lock operating mechanisms are the wrong type. They do have other bases but I don't know where they are. So a pure guess to start homing in on the location... The Grand Union Canal.
The canal is part of the Gand Union Central (1 lock of 166...) but the goal is to identify the city in which the edifice in the first picture is.
P.s. I once worked just up the road in Rednal.
I'd forgotten about the original photo which I couldn't identify at all. Now with all the clues though I know it to be Warwick Castle. I've been there but don't remember the river.
When were you in Rednal? I lived just up the road in Kings Norton when first married and then just down the road in Bromsgrove for many years.
Warwick castle is correct! I lived right on the castle walls and worked at nearby British Gas.
I was in rednal recently, doing a gig for a big food and hospitality company. The whole Birmingham area was nice
Right. I'll try to find a new photo. Don't have access to my full library at the moment.
While you are all waiting, here's more info on
Warwick CastleAn easy one I think...
Leverick Bay?
PS--If that's right, someone else go, as I don't really have any pictures right now.
Wrong country Carol but right part of the world.
Guadaloupe?
I also stayed in Kings Norton , Man in the Moon
Nope, none of those. Guadeloupe the closest.
No, not Montserrat. Below is another, perhaps better known, harbour on the same island. I'm hoping for the name of the harbour in the original photo.
The last picture is perhaps Shirley Heights, Antigua? But I personally don't know the name of any other harbors in Antigua..
It is indeed Antigua. A very 'happy' (there's a clue) place for yachties.
No, not Falmouth Fred. Falmouth is the one in the distance behind English in the photo a couple of posts back. The one I'm looking for is on the west coast and is mostly surrounded by sets of Row (called a terrace in England) houses which are pretty horrible looking. I rented a nicer standalone house in this 'happy' (think of another word that means happy) harbour.
Ellen--by Jove, I think you've got it!
Well done Ellen. Your turn.
So onto something completely different. Ignore the lovely ladies in purple, the key to this picture is behind them. Where am I?
If you know this one, it might go quickly.
Yup, thought I had a slight chance of it lasting a little while. You are up!
If you are wondering what we were doing on the racetrack, it is an annual half marathon called the Indy Mini where you run a lap on the track. Not sure if they still let you as this was a bit ago, but it was very cool to enter the track and see/run the banked turns as well as the pole and the bricks.

I'm sure that was fun!!! First thing I saw were the old bricks in the racetrack! I'll post a photo shortly.
Here you go!
Given the color of the seats, I'll say Tallahassee and FSU.
Not sure where it is but it’s a big concert with a piano. I’m going Billy Joel somewhere.
xrayman--Yes, I recognized it immediately also.. I didn't have any pictures right now anyway.
Fred, you got it! This is the civic center where the Noles play basketball. We were there for the Jimmy Buffett/KC/Toby Keith benefit concert after Irma and Maria, "Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season". I'm sure there were other TTOL's there as well!
xrayman--YES!! We were there!! What a great concert!!!
Here is one out of the airplane window and a little less of a "giveaway" than some other pictures I have, but I'll see how this goes. I'm looking for the major city name.
Correct Sleepychef, and I thought that might last longer than this one. You are up.
Entrance to which town
No idea, but just to narrow down somewhat, the Pacific northwest on the Canadian side?
Any chance it's Port Angeles, WA?
Went to see these chaps after we got off the ferry at the town
Further north about 2000km
Further north about 2000km
That's too far north for me to ever go! Anchorage? The only name I know up there.
If North Pole is correct, can you name the middle one Adrian?
How about Petersburg, AK?
Beerman is closest so far use google its about 150km north
We have a winner! Your up Beerman
I've never been to Haines, is it as beautiful as the pictures I just googled? sleepy looking town?
Where were we......
No idea why I'm guessing it, but Nevis?
Maybe next door St. Kitts?
so close Carol, but St Kitts it is! any idea what island is in the background?
Fred you are up!
No problem, Beerman. Beautiful photo!!!
Without looking at a map online, I would just guess Montserrat?
BEERMAN, considering where the fort sits on St Kitts I'd guess that island might be Eustatia (sp)?
OK, here we go.
BEERMAN, considering where the fort sits on St Kitts I'd guess that island might be Eustatia (sp)?
yep Statia!
Bom dia,
Unfortunately, I can't find another picture except the one above from another angle. My tee shirt from here says "The Emerald of the Atlantic"
Obrigado
So it is either Portugal, or Brazil (or Angola or Mozambique). But that looks like Brazil - but without resorting to Google I only know large cities.... but I have a friend from Bélem so I'll guess there...
Praia da Vitoria, Azores from your clue Obrigado
Not Belem Zanshin, but you are closest so far.
Brazil, yes and I thought my clue might be more revealing than just language.
<fingers are tickling for using google...>
Since there hasn't been much response and I don't like the doldrums, go ahead and use Google now.
Correct and did you use a clue I gave or a map? Regardless, Zanshin is up.
I kind-guessed a bit and googled island and Brazil... So I somewhat cheated. I'm not proud

What city allowed this building to be built?
For no particular reason, is this city in Mexico?
...and for hardly any reason, I'll guess Union Island.
Neither guess is correct. I had thought that this one would be answered quickly, as the color and architecture of this house is rather unique. The next pictures were taken within a couple of yards of each other and just a couple of hundred feet away from this house. What city are we in?

Close - because this city name also begins with a "P"...
Based on that hint and the PC on the auto tag my next guess would be Panama City.
Correct Hemisphere, but wrong city
I'm using the google option if it's time..............;-)
With the "P" clue, Port of Spain?
No, not Port-of-Spain. Let me add another picture. Same docks, but this time a panorama
xrayman67 - yes, it is Portsmouth, Dominica. You are up.
Here you go!
Zanshin, I think you have the record for the quickest right answer!
I spent over a month waiting for a replacement rudder (which fell off at sea, a somewhat disheartening experience) from a berth with exactly that view one time several years ago, so that view is ingrained in my memory. As are discussions with the gent next to me at the marina, Mr. Morgan Freeman on his Shannon "Afrodesia".
Where is this?
Please do tell about Morgan Freeman. He seems like he would be an extremely interesting man!!
Trellis Bay?
He was unrecognizable, but very personable. We talked about single-handing sailboats and once I heard his distinctive voice I knew who he was! He goes by a pseudonym at the docks so that tourists don't recognize him immediately. At the time his wife was building a house on island and he disassociated himself from the project by spending time on his boat and reading. I spent time talking with him as a neighbor and watching the cricket world cup at the local bar on the only TV. I was impressed by his polite demeanor when people barged in on our table and demanded autographs - I suppose that is a price of fame! I also had a great experience a year or two later with Brian Johnson (of AC/DC fame) at the docks - I'm sure he enjoyed it more than I since I didn't recognize him until many beers and stories had passed!
No, not Trellis Bay - somewhat further south...
You have great stories!
Ellen

I'm glad I posted the photo! Love your stories!
Ellen and Adrian--Agreed! Great stories!
try somewhere in the Grenadines?
Nobody has gotten close yet.
Fred - you've nailed it; it is the village of Deshaies on Guadeloupe. The next picture would have been of the church which many would recognize from the "Death in Paradise" television series.
OK, here's one to start.
Could this be the airport on St. Kitts - it looks like it might be there (I used to be a pilot so I tend to remember approaches and runways)
Carol - If I was correct I was going to post a St. Barths shot as the next picture; that one is very, very different and much more difficult. I'm not sure if I am correct about St. Kitts, though - I think that runway had a taxiway... but it does have a significant upwards slant when coming in or taking off in that direction.
Zanshin--Well, I thought when I posted it, that it looked too GREEN for St. Barts. Didn't realize you were also a pilot!
Carol - I flew gliders (competitively, even flew for the USA team at the worlds years ago) and single-engine until recently. I've looked at the St. Barths approach from the top the hill several times and don't know if I could land there even in optimal conditions in the type of aircraft I'm used to. Although one of the gliders I flew had 90° dive brakes/flaps and I could land that baby on a postage stamp...
Neither of the above 2 Saints - Kitts or Barts. Here's another hint but most of my pictures are dead giveaways.
The vegetation leads me to think Caribbean. But it isn't Saba and St. Kitts and St. Barths are out. St. Thomas, Beef Island, St. Martin (both airports), Antigua and Guadeloupe are out. Îles des Saintes abuts on the sea, Dominica's two runways are also at sea level ...
WAG - Mustique?
Saba is supposed to be very 'interesting' so I'm guessing at that.
I'm going to be away from my computer for a few hours, so here is a pretty good clue. I will have my phone so I can respond to answers.
"V2" is Antigua and it certainly isn't Antigua or Barbuda! The closest island that might have an airport like that is Montserrat. I haven't seen that airport but there's nothing else I can think of that is in range of a helicopter....
Montserrat is correct. The background is not a thunderstorm but a cloud of smoke from the volcano. You are up.
With the helicopter tail-number there was no other option
I noticed the tail number but thought the chopper was based in another island.
Not St. Croix - they speak Francais here.
No, not Haiti, this is further east and south of this location
Francais in Cuba?
I realized my error in the previous post and corrected it - this location is to the east and south of Cuba
Francais in Cuba?
I realized my error in the previous post and corrected it - this location is to the east and south of Cuba

LOL, missed that clue!
Don't have any idea if that is correct or not, but whoever solves this one, please start a new post. Thanks!
Marie Galante? A SWAG from a Francais speaking place. ("S" is for statistical which is different than regular WAG).
Marie Galante? A SWAG from a Francais speaking place. ("S" is for statistical which is different than regular WAG).
I always thought the "S" was for Scientific.
Dan
Dan, You are correct - it's "scientific" and still better than plain WAG!
Not Marie Galante, but you are close. This fort (finally one not named after Napoleon) was built to defend against the British. This picture is taken from the same location but turned counterclockwise and facing SSE
Here's a panoramic shot of the entrance
There is a fort at Isles des Saints.
Two of them (sort of), in fact. The one you thought might be the one in these pictures is, unfortunately, called "Fort Napoléon des Saintes"

The other is on Cabrit island and I don't think it has name, but it isn't it...
Marie Galante, the Îles des Saintes and even Basse-Terre on Guadeloupe can all be seen in the pictures. So which town is the fort in? Or what is the fort's name? The fort protected this area:
xrayman67 - Yes, "Pointe à Pitre" would have been sufficient, or perhaps even "Guadeloupe" but you've nailed it exactly.
Here you go!
Hi. No idea where that is, but whoever solves this one, please start a new thread with your new picture.
Need to travel north and west.
Further west. I will post another photo clue shortly.
Another photo from the same town.
Looks like central America, but I'll start by guessing Mexico and the town - ciudad de somewhere?
Mexico is the right country. The city boasts one of the longest ship piers in the world. 4 miles
Not Cozumel, but correct region of Mexico.
You're getting closer. Still further west. It is a port city.
Just tossing out names now - Veracruz?
Just tossing out names now - Veracruz?
Not Veracruz. Close to a very popular capital city. We took a tour of this port city on a double decker bus and had to duck our heads to keep from being decapitated by the power lines.
My recollection of the Mexican coast is vague and without Google, I'll toss out Merida.
Where is Carol with her cruise ship knowledge?
Carol's not the only one that enjoys cruises, although we haven't been on as many as her, only 19.

The only place I can think of with a long pier is Progreso. If that's correct let Carol go with the next one I have to go to work and will be off until after noon.

Progreso is correct! We need to start a new thread.
We've never actually been to Progresso, as that is kind of a recent addition for a dock in the area and we haven't been on a cruise that went to that area for a long time, much preferring the Eastern Caribbean route. My understanding is that Progresso was just a made up area, that there was nothing there before and the government just created a dock and some shops there.
I don't have any pictures right now. Tom, if you're out there, how about you post one?? If Tom doesn't post a new pic by 11 AM EDT, anyone can go!!!
In the meantime, I will close this one.
