Ellen, ironically after my guess I saw your picture on Smithsonian Channel Aerial America featuring Ohio. OK, what is the name of this place? Be specific.
The Bight on Norman Island, BVI
Saltwhistle Bay, Mayreau?
Mike, Salt Whistle Bay it is and you got it with the first picture. You are up.
Mike, most confusing to me - looks like a place protected by barrier islands hence relatively flat. I don't see any tropical vegetation like palms and the land rises sharply so I eliminated certain familiar places.. Just for fun, I'll guess somewhere in the Indian Ocean?
It's a difficult one this. Don't have any photos that will make identification easier so it'll just have to be a case of homing in on the answer. Not the Indian Ocean but you are in the correct hemisphere Fred.
This should narrow it down to the right country...
OK, we know it's Australia now. It looks warm to me so I'll guess somewhere in the Northern Territory?
(side note: I lived in the top floor flat of the building in the centre of the picture)
Nearer to Sydney than the Northern Territory. Wasn't actually that warm as it was winter. There is something unusual about the sand on this island. Can you work out what it is...

Well, there doesn't appear to be any sign of seashells. Closer to Sydney so I'll guess the obvious, Tasmania?
Looks like quartz sand, but not sure where in Australia.
Adrian... It is Silica Sand. Absolutely amazing because it doesn't stick to you and it squeaks just like the best powder snow when you walk on it. This photo is the island next to the original photo. It shares its name with one of the American Founding Fathers mentioned in one of the recent photo competitions...
Got me by the butt. Can't think of any island in Australia named like an American founding father.
That's it Fred. The island in the original photo Is Whitsunday and the beach Whitehaven Beach (
https://www.queensland.com/gb/en/th...c07b935fbe730dc52c-whitehaven-beach.html ). You may remember that Jean and I don't really like beaches (much to Malcolm's disgust) except when viewing them from the cockpit of an anchored boat but Whitehaven is different. The sand is incredible in that it doesn't stick to you and also doesn't get hot. Much more comfortable. than your average beach! Your go.
Mike, I forgot about beaches, but I do recall your disdain for kitty cats. Regarding your picture, I kept going through the alphabet and only after I looked it up I would have guessed Mackay. However, your clue led me to Hamilton. OK, here's one for now with a more revealing one later if needed.
So I just need to say that Zanshin has lived just about everywhere and sleepychef has worked the world over.
I’m a bit jealous right now.
But return to the game.
So I will randomly guess Canadian Rockies.
Beerman, I was looking for the name of the NP, but El Capitan could be in the picture so I'm giving you credit. My next one would have surely been a giveaway for Yosemite NP. Beerman, you are up.
Interesting - I thought of "El Capitan" and googled it, but none of the images matched, although the rock formations looked similar. I should have thrown out that guess after all

That is one National Park that I need to put onto my bucket list.
Wasn't sure if that was a side view of the face of El Cap? I'm hopping in the truck to head for the mountains now...so I'll keep the theme going...where is this?
Denali! Tried to post a pic from our measly 3000 foot mountain cabin in GW National Forest where we are now, but no luck.
Yes Denali! Sorry, it looked like sarcasm when I reread!
I think this will go fast
I think this will go fast
I'm keeping quiet.
Mike, looks like everyone is being quiet and you were on my suspect list. Maybe this closer view will help others.
Guess it didn't go fast after all. I'm pretty sure Mike knows, but if you were to post something about this place, it would be under Southern Caribbean.
...and everything is on this island
I'll make a very wild guess...San Andres?
Fran, it's not but where is San Andres.
If one looks at Southern Caribbean on TTOL, there is a list that will narrow this down. In addition, feel free to Google away.
Adrian, you are correct. You are up (after the basketball game of course). What was your clue?
In case anyone is interested, the strange looking buildings can be read about here
https://www.moonholecompany.com/
Fred, San Andres is about a hundred miles or so off the coast of Nicaragua.
Fred, I have heard of Moonhole before, but to be honest, I had to google the location.
If anyone has a picture, feel free to go ahead and post.
Those ant mounds are impressive (there are actually "air conditioning ants" that open and close the vents in there!) so we must be in Australia, but I can't narrow it down further yet.
Australia is correct. The mounds are made by the Compass or Magnetic Termite and they align north/south to minimise exposure to the sun...
https://termitetemperature.weebly.com/compass-termites-of-north-australia.html
I'm trying to remember which museum had a large termite nest that one could walk through and see how it functions as a complex system. It was very impressive - I think it might have been Sheffield, but perhaps the natural history museum in London. Wherever it was, it was very impressive. Since the area looks dry, I am going to narrow the guess down to the eastern half of Oz.
The next pic is of my nav station. I was just about to leave the east coast as shown on the laptop heading for the next destination where the first photo was taken. You'll need to zoom in to see the detail.
The hitchhiker didn't fancy the 800 miles west so stayed with us for a while.
The big mono in the photo is friends aboard a early 80s 76ft Swan...

No idea where it is, but I like your dual headsail rig.
Dan
No idea where it is, but I like your dual headsail rig.
Dan

It worked very well Dan. The wide beam of the cat meant I didn't need to use a pole to keep the two genoas filled all the way round to about 140 deg off the wind. Used that for the vast majority of a circumnavigation.
I thought Fran might have got the answer to this as he gave this location as the answer to my previous post
Ok, then I'm guessing Tasmania?
Ok, then I'm guessing Tasmania?
Try a city in the more northern guess you made...
Darwin? Sorry Mike, but you needed an extra coat of paint.

I saw that too Fred but I was at work and didn't get a chance to guess (well not really a guess) but you beat me to it.
Mike, I was thinking the Northern Territory looking at your nav chart but went south for some reason. Go figure.
Ok, then I'm guessing Tasmania?
Try a city in the more northern guess you made...
Knew I'd miss one. Couldn't believe there were so many occurrences of the name! The original photo is Fanny Bay which is where all boats arriving in Darwin have to be quarantined (long before Covid). They came with divers to inspect the hull and then injected stuff UP the thru hulls to kill anything living there. Nice bay but not somewhere you want to go paddling in the water as they remove about 200 Salt Water Crocodiles every year which then gradually work there way back again..
Darwin was a really nice surprise. Arrived not expecting much but really liked the place. Then of course the Outback starts at the edge of town with some amazing sights. Really nice.
Your go Fred.
Love your info Mike, also loved your boat when we chartered her. Sure miss old Bill H.
Love your info Mike, also loved your boat when we chartered her. Sure miss old Bill H.
Didn't know you'd been on Jeannius Fran! Bill was great wasn't he. Sadly quite a few people I've met through TTOL are now gone... BillH, Di, Saildoggie, BigJim, Bluebayou, Daix and now of course Nick. There may be others I don't know about as well. That's quite a toll.
Jeff Carlin is gone also.
I knew about some of those folks, but not all - time flies - especially the older we get.
Back to this fun game. Mike, you didn't miss any names, but you needed 2 coats of paint on some of the names

. Here is one I dug up and the town name please.
Question - is that stadium a cricket pitch?
Well I recognise the boat so I should recognise the location but it doesn't immediately come to mind. The shroud protection didn't last long and I didn't replace it so it is a pretty old photo. Definitely the Caribbean!
Zanshin, I don't know about the stadium. Mike, I wondered if you would recognize that shroud. Yes, the Caribbean.
It was the home made netting on the guardrails I recognised first.
I think it is Roseau, Dominica and the stadium is a cricket pitch.
Mike, this was a much welcomed landfall after beating from Tortola. Next stop was Martinique where I think you were meeting Jean for some kind of sporting event.
Zanshin, you are correct and you are up.
It looked familiar, and that was a cricket pitch in the picture rather than a soccer stadium

This one is a bit further north, but in a city in which I lived for a long time:
Mike, this was a much welcomed landfall after beating from Tortola. Next stop was Martinique where I think you were meeting Jean for some kind of sporting event.
That'll have been March 2007 and the Cricket World Cup I think. Several years later than I thought. I do remember that being a tough old passage!
I had tickets for the World Cricket Cup in Antigua, then my rudder broke off while at sea in the BVI heading to St. Martin. Not my favorite sailing moment...

Dis you have to turn round or did you make it to St Martin?
Without a rudder (unlike with a jammed rudder) a sailboat is inherently unstable and unsteerable. After many hours of trying all the alternatives I could think of (heavy seas: balancing sails won't work without a rudder, motoring just goes sideways and then in circles even with trailing line, pushing/towing the boat with my 10HP dinghy in those seas didn't work) I drifted until the bottom was only 50 feet and dropped the hook and VHFd for a tow. It was an inauspicious day, as everyone with a boat was off looking for an infant that had gone overboard on a vessel that ran aground going between Fallen Jerusalem and the Baths. I waited 24 Hours and Speedy came by with his twin-engined "Unbelievable" fishing boat to tow into Spanis Town. Needless to say, anchoring in a full 6+ foot swell at sea, I was looking a bit green

p.s. I though of using one of my internal cabin doors as a makeshift tiller but in the end I negotiated a tow price that was less than the cost of replacing the internal door so I didn't try that. I had tried dragging weights and fenders on spare lines to get directional stability with no success as well.
Well done for getting to safety without having to call visar.
Back to the photo... Germany?
Mike - you've got approximately the correct latitude for southern Bavaria, but this building isn't in Germany.
The middle lane in the stairs are reserved for slower traffic, for those climbing up on their knees...
Wow, I think I will pass on climbing those stairs, either way!! No idea where it is though.
Don't know why exactly but guessing Canada?
I've heard of this place. Now all I've got to do is remember where it is without resorting to google
This is indeed in Canada. While I loved growing up in the snow as a wee kid, I now much prefer warmer climes. So where in Canada are we?
I'm guessing hte French part of Canada. They seem least likely to crawl on their knees, so it seems mostly to me.
Pretty sure it is indeed Montreal. We were on the on/off bus a couple of years ago and made this stop. Could see the old baseball stadium in the distance.
Edit:
Here you go
It is indeed
St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal. My family lived in a block of apartments just to the left (north) of the picture. I still recall looking in awe at ll those crutches mounted in the alcoves and the woods around Canada's largest church made for excellent playing grounds.
I guess it's open to anyone to post another photo.
Have you visited here?
![[Linked Image]](http://www.traveltalkonline.com/gallery/38/full/8329.jpeg)
If some one can tell me how to resize this, please PM me.
I have no idea where this could be - but I like the name!
Here’s the menu on the window, on a main street in this town.
Despite the suggestive name and menu all patrons wear clothes! And yes, it is an after dinner establishment.
OK, the street is a U.S. highway
I've heard of this place and I know there is more than one but I've never seen them. One in Key West and at least one in Savannah. The seahorse doors make me think it's near the water and your clue about the highway makes me think of A1A or US1 so I'll go with Key West.
Yes it is Key West. On US1 Just two blocks from Duval Sy
Go ahead and post another if you have one, or anyone else feel free.
Should be easy!
Happy Easter!
Holy Cow! One of the most popular islands in the Caribbean and nobody can identify this stretch of land, island or body of water?
I saw those two cell towers and vegetation and thought of St. Martin, but I don't recognize those hotels/apartments. And the hills are too low for that to be Pic Paradis. The only other island that built up that comes to mind is St. Thomas, but I'd have to google to find out where. Perhaps Red Hook?
Yes, sailing Pillsbury sound towards Red Hook, St. Thomas.
Wow - I didn't think I was going to guess it. I had thought of the resorts south of Red Hook, but google maps just told me it was north of Red Hook. But I'm not proud (quote stolen from "Alice's restaurant") and will take that as a correct guess.
Which city is this?
No, not Veendam
Looks like the Dutch flag in the first photo so... Zierikzee? Only nice little harbour I can remember.
This is not in Holland. The first photo is the pedestrian zone of this over 800 year old city, the second is of the headquarters of an organization that every adult citizen of this country knows, and fears (and it's not the local equivalent of the IRS).

There looks to be an 'onion dome' in the background of the pedestrian photo, the original has flags (hard to see though) that could be Russian and those folks still fear the KGB so I'm going out on a limb and guess St. Petersburg.
This city is about 1400KM (870 miles for those still using the archaic imperial system) from St. Petersburg. "Fear" might have been an exaggeration regarding this government entity, "healthy respect" might be more appropriate.
There's a common saying and popular T-Shirt logo that says:
"<this city name> is just like a payback card. Collect enough points and you get a bicycle" (n.b. it loses a bit of poignancy in translation to English)
No, this is not Hamburg, but you've got the correct country.
I'm going to guess Bremerhaven
Bremerhaven is close, only 150 km as the crow flies but 328 km by car and is further away than Hamburg from this city. It has a population of over 90,000 so isn't a small town
xrayman67 - you've got it. Was it Google or did you know which town it was?
While Flensburg is a pretty city, every driver in Germany knows of it because the central German authority for driving licenses resides there. The number of points on your license is stored there, hence everyone in Germany knows about "points in Flensburg". If you get too many, you lose your license and get to drive a bicycle
I had to resort to Google... If anyone wants to post a picture, go ahead.

That is a fascinating piece of information, thank you. That is why I like this game so much, the things you can learn.
Next photo.
The St. Kitts and Nevis flag on the boat looked promising, but the read of the background doesn't match. Are we further north than St. Kitts here?
The St. Kitts and Nevis flag on the boat looked promising, but the read of the background doesn't match. Are we further north than St. Kitts here?
Yes. Another pic.
Too easy - that new picture gave it away. I'm off for a couple of hours, but if someone else doesn't guess it, I will!
Since nobody has chimed in, I'll guess that we have Soper's Hole / West End of Tortola in the BVI in this picture behind the schooner.
Arnd, you are correct! We sailed by this tall ship last time we were down in BVI. She was a beautiful sight!
It wasn't an easy one - but I know that area far too well

I spent time in this city/country. I was doing irregular work at the time and it was exciting (frightening at the time).
Where could this be?
Just a pure guess, based on the outline of the building--Egypt?
That is one moldy looking building. I'll guess somewhere in India where it rains a lot.
Fred - in real life that building looks worse than in the picture. It is not in India, nor is it in Egypt. It is one of the few architecturally interesting buildings in this capital city.
I've spent some time in Jakarta, Indonesia and the traffic situation and general scruffiness fits. So, Jakarta.
No, this city is about half the size of Jakarta; and this is about the most interesting architecture there... Jakarta has real skyscrapers and some flair - unlike this place. Here's the other interesting building in town:
Perhaps somewhere in Myanmar, like Yangon?
No, not in Myanmar - this is a Roman Catholic cathedral.
Racking my brain trying to think of places which meet your description - is Timor or East Timor a country? If so, I definitely don't know the capital; just hear of periodic trouble there.
No, we are not in Asia but solidly in Africa. I spent some time working here and it is one of the places I would not revisit. One of the few times I was not armed while there I was ambushed, but fortunately their firearm either malfunctioned or ran out of ammunition (probably the latter, as it was an AK-47). While the country has gotten better in recent years, for the most part it makes the ghettos in US cities look safe in comparison.
Are we in the right area on the map?
Fran - Africa, not Asia
What's left of the name on the building and the Roman Catholic Cathedral makes me think of a former French colony - Rwanda?
No, not Rwanda - but they do speak Français there.
OK, how about Côte d'Ivoire?
Fran - yes, it is Abidjan in the Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)! I was doing security work there and would not return again.
Someone please go ahead with another photo.
Might be easy, might be hard.
Hint -- it's not in the BVI.

Dan
San Francisco hotel. Stayed in tower room years ago. SF classic
Off of Union Square.
Sorry, had a busy day. You're correct of course. I did not stay there -- just walked past.
If no-one got it, I thought I might post this photo.
Dan
Typical vehicles found on this street in this city
Well, actually it is an Avenue.
I saw some cars like those in Monaco?
I'm thinking Palm Beach, FL.
I'm thinking Washington DC.
Rick, Drive isn’t Avenue!
Yes, NDFAN, it’s Palm Beach, but what’s the name of that Avenue? It’s a name as famous as Rodeo Drive.

That’s a Rolls, Ferrari, and a Bentley, btw. There was a chauffeur standing by the Rolls!
This was going to be another hint of a nearby street. Uniquely named: Royal Palm Way
Oh, I see Avenue now, I'm slow like that!!!
It’s Worth Avenue. I used to live on Brazilian ave and Atlantic ave.

Winner, winner! TravelHat has the chicken dinner. But in that zip code dinner starts at $39.95 ala carte!
Post away TravelHat

Well that was 1980-1988 so it was a little less at Hamburger Heaven or Testa’s. I will look for a picture in the AM but I may be out so if anyone has one, proceed
Well, TravelHat disappeared and it’s a rainy night, so here’s an easy one.
Extra credit if you know from where the pix was taken.
Very easy - I'll continue to play the game; I still believe that you shouldn't guess an image unless you have one to post. This is the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, taken from Hog Heaven. The docks are Leverick Bay while you can see Saba Rock sandwiched between Prickly Pear island and the Bitter End.
Yes, of course. Exactly correct. Actually from 2013
Is Hog Heaven open these days?
As the barber says: “Next!”

Sorry I got caught up in this thing called “life”. I will refrain from solving if I can’t be prompt in the future.
What city is this in? I have a series of 3 pictures for this one, each image being easier to guess:
TravelHat, don't worry about it, guess away. Carol has already stated you don't need to have a photo since so many of us have run out.
And the next picture...
I'll venture a wild guess - Munich?
Fred has it. The "Chinese Pavilion" (a beer garden) is in the middle of the
Englischer Garten in Munich, Germany. The Park is bigger than Central Park in New York and is wonderful in summer and winter alike. The first picture is of an iconic tram/bus station next to the park called "Münchner Freiheit", and when I was working in Munich I lived in a flat just off the picture. This is in the middle of an area called "Schwabing" which is the part of town with all the live music, theatres and nightclubs so I loved living there!
Zanshin, I walked through this park about 30 years ago to get from my hotel to Schwabing. I recall asking the desk clerk if it was safe to walk there after dark and he looked at me like I was crazy - "of course it's safe to walk in the park anytime" he said. I couldn't remember the park's name, but something in the back of my mind told me there was an exotic structure there and hence my guess.
Well, on with the show. I scrounged this picture up in my disorganized sd cards, but I won't have many follow-ups so here goes.
I thought for sure someone would have gotten their vaccine here - guess not. Here is another clue.
Before it gets too late for our European/UK friends, here's another. Sorry for the fuzzy picture, but my others are all dead giveaways.
xrayman--that's what I thought, but don't have a picture to post.
Adrian, you are correct and what was your clue? I'm curious if it's the subtle ones for which I posted the picture. Here is an example of one of the dead giveaways I had left.
Adrian is up, and time for a new thread.
Don't know about Adrian, but I thought the picture showed Hemingway and that led me to Havana.
Carol, that was why I posted it, but thought it might be too fuzzy for many to realize it was Hemingway without careful scrutiny. However, with the recent PBS documentary, that may have him more on the minds of US folks.
Actually watched "Hemingway and Gellhorn" on HBO Max just the other night. Hemingway was the kicker, but before that I was leaning toward San Juan.
I didn't watch the Hemingway thing, as I was under the impression it was a multi-part deal? It seems like I always miss parts of them.
PBS had a multi part docu series a couple weeks ago. It anyone wants to start a new thread, go ahead. Otherwise I'll start one this evening.
