Places to rent in Outer Banks, North Carolina - 03/10/2017 12:53 AM

The hubby and I are looking for a place to book and rent in the Outer Banks NC area.

So far the only two sites I have found is https://www.twiddy.com/outer-banks/ and http://www.outerbanksvacations.com/rentals. It looks like Twiddy is the better one of the two and has the most options.

So my main question is where is the best place to stay? There are SO many options it sorta honestly is pretty overwhelming. From what I have read it seems Duck, Corolla, and Nags Head are the best locations to be and stay. We will be booking it for 6 weeks so im just super paranoid about having to get it right.

Thanks all!

Have many years experience dealing with Twiddy realtors. I love them - their rentals are well maintained and must uphold certain standards. I like the fact that all their rentals are equipped with bed linens all ready made up fresh for each turnover. Towels are also supplied which saves packing space when driving. If you should have a maintenance problem, they are very quick to respond. The area where you stay depends on your personal preferences. Duck is a little more congested than Corolla but has great shops. We are staying in Southern Shores this year to be a little closer to the main highway. Homes south of Nags Head, down toward Cape Hatteras, are much less expensive but then you also have a 20 to 30 mile ride back up to the main areas of the island. Some people prefer being in a more remote area of the OBX. Individual towns have very low speed limits so driving can be a pain during the busier months. It's just something you have to deal with. We usually go in May before the crowds come. We love OBX, different vibe than other places like the Jersey shore, less frenzied and more laid back.

I've gone to Nags Head for at least a week every summer for the past 34 years, so I am a little biased but I've also stayed in Duck and places south of Manteo as well.

Keep in mind I have a very pro Nags Head bias, but my super simple breakdown would be:

Duck - too yuppyish/congested
Towns south of Manteo - too remote/isolated
Nags Head - just right smile

Avon quit being remote and isolated about 20 years ago.
If you like to do the 4x4 beach thing and you have never seen down to Cape Point, head south.
With 6 weeks you could jump around.
