Possible TSA book ban?

Possible TSA book ban? - 06/26/2017 12:44 PM

Early this morning I was half listening to the radio and I thought I heard a quick blurb about the TSA considering the possible banning of books in carry-ins? Really? Or did they mean you had to carry your books on in your hands?

I did a quick and half-hearted search and can't find any mention of it. Did anyone else here this or was I dreaming? It was pretty early........ That would be a huge issue for me, much as I want everyone, myself included, to be safe. Any insight gratefully appreciated.

Pat, here's a link to an article. Not a ban, but a search.

That's when we need to bring back tuna salad, egg salad and canned sardines. I hope it doesn't ever come to that....... <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />

Am I missing something? Books are scanned with your carry ons. Couldn't they see if something was hidden in a book? Is paper to X-ray scanners as lead is to Superman's X-ray vision? This annoys the heck out of me. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cloud.gif" alt="" />

Not directed at anyone in particular, but TSA doesn't make this stuff up. There had to be some intelligence that let someone know that this was something the terrorists are considering. The heading of this post is misleading, as there's no talk of "banning" books. Frankly, whatever it takes to keep planes in the sky; I'm all for it.

You beat me to that same comment. If scanners can't detect something in paper then what's the point? Really...just hand inspect EVERY bag. Since most times the walk through personal scanner is just looking for metal objects they should be frisking and residue swabbing everyone for explosives also or use the xray, hands up, spinning scanner 100%.

Seriously...what could be hidden in a book/magazine that couldn't be just placed in a toiletry bag, box or ANY other container. I think maybe they are really checking for certain books that would fit a profile and initiate an additional complete security check...

But I guess this way it will be interesting to see what everyone brings to read on vacation.. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" />

Right on. Makes absolutely zero sense, unless they are looking for content, which they know is illegal to do.

Hubby explained to meet it's when they hollow out pages, etc to hide something.
But that sh*t could be caught by the X-ray when carry on goes through IMO

Yup, that works when hiding stuff in a book on a shelf at home but, as was mentioned, everything is scanned in the airport. Why not refit a camera lens to conceal whatever you want...or ANY object. Is that Lindt chocolate brick really chocolate?

I guess if the book is thick enough it could block the scan but maybe an effort to improve the scan would be more appropriate.

Most people have lots "stuff" in their carry-on bag these days. It's not the book that's difficult to see on the x-ray, and clothing isn't difficult for the x-ray to see through either. It's the jam-packed carry-on with a book sandwiched between an iPad, a Kindle, a phone, a bag full of jewelry, etc, etc, which is the issue.
