Leverick Bay to Diamond Cay

We'll be chartering our first catamaran in March and trying to come up with a tentative itinerary. Would a one day leg from Leverick Bay to Diamond Cay in Jost be too long? Maybe with a lunch stop. Can't wait. Thanks for the input.

Certainly can be done - longer than what we'd typically do since there's plenty of places to stop along the way.

I suppose that depends on what you consider too long. I think it's a great sail. You can always bail out and go to Marina Cay. Stop at The Dogs for some great snorkeling. Do get an early start. If the moorings are taken at Diamond Cay, there is room to anchor with good holding.

It's normally downwind and about 3 hours, so definitely do-able.

We had a similar question about this a few weeks back. Had some interesting responses with one saying they made that voyage, sailing, in 1.5h ...... sure, in a power boat at 18kts not sailing.

Its just over 25 miles as the crow flies and most said it would take between 2.5 and 4h. If I recall, when he reported back in, it took him just a little under 3h. The current set him to the North so, just steer a little more south than about 228 degrees true.

Its a very nice sail.

I think the thread a couple weeks ago was asking about sailing from Anegada to JVD, which also pretty easy.

last summer we followed Maytrix out of Leverick and met up at the Dogs for some snorkeling, then proceeded to Monkey Point for more swimming. They stayed at Guana and we continued on to Diamond Cay. We arrived just before sunset and were happy to find plenty of room at Diamond Cay. There's good holding to anchor just north of Diamond Cay and south of the mooring field. There's also plenty of good holding over in the area in front of the B-Line Beach Bar.

On another note, have you ever noticed the shoal to the SE of Diamond Cay? There's still plenty of water, but if you're not expecting it, it'll wake you up real quick as you watch the depth meter drop quickly.

total sleigh ride all the way. worst case would be a beam reach. no worries.
even with iron sails, it's not more than a few hours.

you have lots of plan "b" options. if diamond is full, little will be open.
plan c and plan d options abound

I guess the only thing I would say is..why? we "go to the top" and muddle down over several days.

We made this very sail on Dec 17, 2014. We really enjoyed it. We left Leverick Bay Marina at 8:30 am, motored thru the North Sound and out the pass/marked channel between Colquhoun's Reef and Prickly Pear Island. Hoisted sails once we cleared thru the pass and sailed on a true heading of 270 deg until noon. This was a very comfortable sail with following seas. We headed for Jost from there but had to motor because the wind was directly behind us (a Parasilor have come in hand then!). We caught a mooring ball at Great Harbor, JVD at 2:15 pm, dinked over to White Bay for some PK's at SDB then dinked to Foxy's and then back to the boat. We then motored over to Diamond Cay, arrived at Diamond Cay at 5:45 pm and caught a mooring ball. We pulled trolling lures most of the way and caught a Barracuda.

If you are staying in a slip at Leverick and want to leave before 8:00 am, you may consider paying your bill the day before. (Leroy and Tito open the marina office at 8:00 am)

We sailed that leg aboard Holoholo before the Cat Fight, in fact raced that leg with Blue Moon, we reached out toward Annegada at first to get a good Gybe angle to JVD.

Stopped at B Line, great little place!

We have sailed from The Biter End to Red Hook and back to pick up an unplanned guest. You can do it..... but, most members of most BVI crews do not want to spend that much time moving the boat. I would consider the weather each day when everyone is ready to move the boat. Then consider what all the members of the crew enjoy or at least will tolerate well.

We sailed on our last trip from North Sound to Sopers Hole (via north side of Tortola) on a 38' mono. My favorite day of the trip at the helm for sure.
