What size boat

For a trip in January of 2017, there will be 3 couples plus skipper. Right now I am looking at 2016 40' Lagoon. Would that be a little tight for 6 adults plus skipper? 2 of 3 couples are newbies and have never been sailing on a trip like this. My wife and I are the 3rd couple and our only prior experience was on a Privilege 435. We were the only two with skipper on that boat so we had plenty of room obviously. Should I be looking at a bigger boat?

most of the time you'll be on deck or out in the water (assuming your group likes being in the water) so I think you'd be fine. Last March we were on a 38' cat with 1 couple (my husband and I), 2 adult kids and 2 more young adults. We never felt cramped.

You'll need 4 cabins. A 40-foot cat will work. We've had 8 in a 4-cabin Lipari 41. It's tight, and there was not really enough storage space for us all, but it worked. Bring soft luggage that will squish down to nothing!

Twanger, when you say it's tight, what do you mean? It's tight in the sleeping quarters or tight up top in the common areas?

Both. A 41-foot cat, ours had 4 heads, has very little storage space for as many as 8 people. The heads are tiny and the cabins are small and have little storage space. The main salon is hard-pressed to handle 8. Requires deck chairs or a cooler for 1-2 people to sit on to get 8 people around the dining tables.

You'll have 7 people, and that makes a difference when you're pushing the capacity.

It would actually be better to only have two heads and use the extra space for storage. (That is, if you don't mind sharing a head with people.)

A 44-foot cat, like the Helia 44, has MUCH more storage space and living space.

Much depends on the actual boat configuration.

Some boats are going to a little coffee table in the main-salon vs. a real dining table. Not sure what they are thinking... not a fan of this trend.

A lot depends on your (1) budget and (2) the people you are sailing with. If the six of you are hard-core sailors, then you are probably used to being a bit cramped and the 40ft lagoon will work fine. But if you think the group might prefer a little more personal body space, then go for a bigger boat. If the budget is not a significant concern, then go for a Leopard 48 or similar.

None of us are hardcore sailors by any means. Just love being out on the water.

I only have the Privilege 435 to go off of. Will I notice a big difference in space with regards to salon, trampoline, aft deck, etc compared to the 40'?

Twanger, the Lagoon 40' has 2 heads so I presume that will lead to more storage space and maybe more communal space as well.

I just don't want to assume the 40' will have enough space for the 6 of us and then we show up and I am disapointed. But I may be over thinking it, which I am prone to do!!

We sailed 4 couples for years on a 44 foot Voyage and had ample space for storage and for crew. However by the end of a week you often feel a little cramped just because you are with friends all the time on the trip. If your budget allows it I would go bigger and go with 4 heads.

The number of heads doesn't really concern me as much as salon space, deck and trampoline space.

Can anyone else give thoughts on noticeable salon, deck and trampoline space of lagoon 40' versus 44' or 46'? Thanks for all the replies so far. Tough being a newbie and picking a boat!

As far as space goes... a feature of the Lagoon 450 that I really like is the full length (side to side) sailing cockpit. It allows everyone to be a part of the sailing and have a great view of what is going on. Some cats only have room for two at the most to be at the helm station and involved in the sailing.

On our first bareboat trip, 16 years ago, we had 10 of us on a 38' cat. Never seemed crowded. Last year we had 10 of us on a 50' cat, seemed a little crowded....LOL. It really depends on what you get use to, we keep moving up in size, so we are getting spoiled.

I think on a brand new 40' Lagoon, you will have plenty of room for 6. We prefer to have a head for each couple, but if that is not important, then you should be fine.

We're on the Moorings 514 powercat in May. Bareboating with 8 adults. Anyone know about the storage for rolling duffel bags on that boat?

Splurge and go for the Lagoon 450. We have had it with 8 people, 6 people and 5 last year. Each cabin has great storage and their own bathroom AND thermostat for AC. But the most favorite part for all our guests is the helm having room for 8 with a cushion Bimini. It's so nice to all be together while sailing. We also utilized the big happy hour pit in front. Check out the video for L-450. You will love it.

40ft boats have much more usable space these days than they did 10 years ago. My guess is a current 40ft model will feel just as big as a Privilege 435.

If you were in the BVI you were probably on my boat, Jeannius, or maybe Snowbird?

Hi Mike! Yes. My wife and I did sail with you on Jeannius in 2012. We absolutely loved Jeannius and the trip you provided was just amazing. Would you say aft deck, salon and trampoline area are comparable to Jeannius and a lagoon 40'?

I am partial but I LOVE Lagoon 450. Check out www.coolchange.life for photos. The 450 has a ton of living space inside and out. I love all the outside space and the huge bridge deck and sun loungers on top. It really is an awesome boat especially if you are looking for comfort. It feels like a floating hotel to me:)

I remember you well. One of the last charters I did before leaving the BVI.

The Lagoon 400 probably has bigger trampolines, similar salon, similar cockpit and smaller fore cabins than Jeannius. Make sure you get one of the stern cabins!
