Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett - 09/14/2017 12:28 AM

Kenny was pretty quick to respond to the need for Irma funding....anyone know if Buffett's camp has done the same? He has certainly profited just as much, if not more, from island inspiration?

Just curious as I have seen nothing as of yet.

He has in the past been right on top of it. I'm waiting to hear as well

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/14/2017 02:12 AM

My wife and I were just discussing this. He's been very quiet. Very odd.

I did receive an email letting me know there were new Margaritaville shirts available online.

Not all good-doing is seen. Heck, he could be behind some of these large anonymous donations that are popping up on many of these Caribbean fundraisers....who knows.

I would point out that he is much more directly and personally tied to Florida, and the Florida Keys, than he is to the BVI. He grew up in Florida. His home (well, at least one of them) is still in Florida. As such, it would not surprise me if he is putting most of his resources into the disaster relief that is required there. And there is a lot of disaster relief needed, particularly in Key West.

He grew up in Alabama. Most every burger dive on the redneck riviera (Alabama and NW FL) coast claims that they are the original Hamburger in Paradise. smile

Trey Anastasio of Phish penned a long, heartfelt post about Tortola yesterday, appealing for help/donations:

That's funny - because Jimmy's own website (https://www.margaritaville.com/faq) says the famous meal took place in Roadtown.

Cool. I'll have to look it up.

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/14/2017 03:34 PM

True story from Jimmy to me..although he has changed it in print..Cheeseburger in Paradise was the old " Stanley's Welcome Bar" where he hung out and played when he rented the house at the end of CGB. He played one night there with Peter Tosh witnessed by one late TTOLer. Not sure why he changed the story but he told me that in 1984 over a cold one..

Sandy's place ?
that would be a great story

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/14/2017 04:20 PM

I guess that is my point. He is well connected with Social media, websites, etc. But searched and have found nothing from him concerning the Hurricanes. Not even a "Hey hope everyone is OK" tweet. My only thought is that the guy with the password for his twitter account still doesn't have internet.

Village key Marina's restaurant in Roadtown years ago had on their menu the Home of the Hamburger in Paradise.

I wonder why Disney isn't donating hurricane relief to the islands in the Caribbean considering they made a ton of money on the Pirates of the Caribbean series of movies.

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/15/2017 12:21 AM

How do you know they didn't? Do they have to take out an ad to say they are donating.

Bridget, don't go there <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />

You don't have a clue.

Disney announced on 9/12 that they were contributing $2.5 million to Irma relief.

Evan...thou knowest me way too well. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />...I was ready to go there....and NOT to defend that mouse but to bury him....

How about all the dough they've made with their cruise line??

Not sure if anyone else saw this from Tim Duncan of the Spurs:
https://www.theplayerstribune.com/tim-duncan-hurricane-irma-us-virgin-islands/

Very heartfelt from a guy who has always been a class act as well

I think we need to flood social media pages - our own and also local and national news - asking why the hell the islands get so little coverage.

That's all very well and good....but since he made oodles of money singing about these places....he needs to be OUT THERE and talking about it. When I am seeing video snippets on FB of people I love like family who have waited days for food and supplies...and they are crying and I feel so very helpless? anyone who can make a big difference in awareness about what's going on down there right now?? With a big voice? Needs to RAISE it.

Very good, are BVI and other Caribbean countries also going to receive funds from their donation or is it for the US only?

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/15/2017 12:20 PM

DJ on Radio Margaritaville said something to the effect that Jimmy Buffet and Margaritaville will be doing something for hurricane relief, but no details were given.

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/15/2017 12:30 PM

Honestly, I would prefer to NOT hear about celebrities, and their charitable deeds. Do it privately. Do it anonymously. I don't need to be told over and over what a wonderful, caring, compassionate human being you are. That's between you and your conscience.

Just my two cents worth.

I didn't mean it that way at all - I could care less how much they give - I just think they can use their fan base to raise awareness so OTHERS are prompted to join in the giving - glad to hear that Radio Margaritaville is saying that - NoShoes Radio is doing the same. This is all good!

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/15/2017 03:15 PM

I totally agree with Winterstale. Having been the president of our local ( but sadly, now defunct ) Parrothead club, I can tell you that Parrotheads are the kindest, most giving people you'll ever meet...especially in times of crisis. I can guarantee you many of Jimmy's fans have already contributed in some way. That being said, like Kenny Chesney's No Shoes Nation, Jimmy could round up his "troops" and encourage more contributions. And he certainly could do that without tooting his own horn. ( just my two cents)

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/15/2017 03:45 PM

he may have already

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/15/2017 03:48 PM

Any Buffett fan worth his SALT is already well aware of the damage to the islands and Key West, and as Parrotheads, are certainly digging deep.

I agree about us Parrotheads being very generous and sympathetic. But where is Buffett and what is he doing???? Come on Jimmy!!!!!!

Re: Jimmy Buffett - 09/15/2017 09:06 PM

why does he have to announce his support? he could have given generously already. Many starts and athletes have given millions.

I don't agree with you often, but I do agree with this statement. Do I have to do a press release when I donate to St.Judes?
