Generators

I know one of the most needed items in the BVI are generators. There are hundreds of available and unused generators sitting on wrecked boats. I know in the islands boat generators are used ashore and rigging them to work out of a boat is not that difficult. Perhaps the charter companies should discuss with insurers about removing gen sets as a humanitarian effort. A generator recycle station could be setup to salvage the sets and modify them as needed.

What a caring and compassionate idea! How do we get this idea out there!!!

At minimum, this would need the consent of the owner or the insurance company (and with this the owner would be forfeiting some of their insurance coverage (as they willfully reduced the value of the vessel by giving generator away).

To achieve this, the boat "donating" the generator would need to be declared "totaled" by the insurer. And the likelihood of generator of "totaled " boat that is not submerged is difficult. If submerged(sunk), then generator probably not usable. If Boat s totaled, the insurer tries to minimize their losses by selling the usable parts of the vessel. It is the business they are in. If costs are not minimized, then their premiums go up.

There have been generators, and batteries, and engines removed from vessels that are not totaled . This is called looting. While I can certainly understand procuring food, water, blankets, tarps , etc in these times, at some point it becomes criminalized. We saw this in the USA when people driving cars and trucks stopped and ran into a building to "save" sneakers from Irma.

Just pointing out some issues with your "caring and compassionate idea".

A "caring and compassionate idea", without any issues would to do as I and many on TTOL have done and make a cash contribution to a worthy charity directing aid to the BVI people.

With all due respect the repurpose of 220 marine generators directly from boats in good or bad shape will harm people. The units where never built for most of us to repurpose.

I hate to bring up a practical flaw with a good idea but marine generators aren't easily adapted to land use. They will need fuel tanks, cooling (biggest difference), exhaust systems, electrical taps, and possibly control systems. Doable, but not on a large scale.

It is good to think outside the box. That is how great and innovative ideas form. However perhaps not in this instance based on adaptability, but keep thinking on ways to help.

I personally have donated $$$ but there must be other ways to be resourceful with what is available at hand.
