White Bay/Guana Island: Wind from South

White Bay/Guana Island: Wind from South - 03/23/2018 03:12 PM

I am wondering if it is frequent to have wind from south in the White Bay on Guana Island as right now when the prevailing wind is east to south-east? In the south part of the bight it could be a cape effect of course but in the northern part where the wind is also blowing from south there normally should be winds from east. But that is not the case.

Does anybody have some experiences with the wind directions in this bight? I am asking because of wanting to anchor instead of taking a mooring ball and I am not sure if here are special changes of the wind directions have to be taken into account at this spot...

It's happened to me there. Wind seems to bend around the hillside.

We visited White Bay for the first time last June with a E-SE wind and it felt pretty exposed - even on the north side of the mooring field. It is a nice place, but our 43 cat was putting enough pressure on the mooring ball that it was under water in a 15 kt. wind. We are pretty confident on anchor, but I would have preferred a mooring ball on this day. My assumption is that things died down some that evening, but we left in the afternoon so I can't speak to overnight conditions.

Keep in mind that if the forecast is for any chance of thunderstorms moving through the anchorage can turn nasty in minutes. Make sure the forecast does not include a possibility of squalls.
