Diamond Cay in a north swell

Looks like there's a 4 ft north swell predicted for next Wednesday when we're planning to be in CGB. 45' Lagoon. I've spent some uncomfortable nights at CGB in a monohull during a north swell that wrapped around and had us bucking like a bronco. I'm thinking of Diamond Cay that night instead (will of course be monitoring the forecast as we go). Anyone have any experience staying in that mooring field during a big swell? Seems like that reef between and LJVD would probably block it. Thanks.

We've tucked in there on a Cat in a north swell.

we have stayed there a number of times with big swell and had no issues at all. Great view of the breakers on the reef between JVD and Little JVD

Thanks. Do you know if it's possible to anchor at Diamond Cay? Usually drop the hook at Green Cay in good weather, but would not want to be there in a swell for sure.

It's relatively deep between Diamond Cay and Little JVD so this is one place I usually just grab a mooring ball. I've anchored just north of Diamond Cay (west of the mooring field and roughly in line with Taboo's dock) and just south of Diamond Cay (in about 20' of water) though both anchorages are bit more exposed than the mooring field if there's a strong E-NE breeze. Entire bay gets a bit rolly if strong SE winds.

Its not cool to anchor either in front of Foxys Taboo or on the side of Diamond Cay where there is sea grass that needs protecting. There are more moorings than there used to be due installation of about ten in front of Bee Line

Curious if anyone has been docked at Scrub Island in a North Swell and had any problems?

You may be experiencing Christmas Winds. Depending on the strength, They can be very, very strong up into the 30's. We would not anchor there, regardless . But, this time of year, the winds can be much stronger than when we are there in May,


Our experience last trip.

In May, if the wind, veers to the E, or SE.....as far as we are concerned , Every harbor on Jost would be open to the sea and wind.

Last trip, just before Irma, we planned on Jost for a few days. The winds were SE, and blowing hard. Diamond cay was out, we tried Great Harbor, it was pretty rough.

So, we made a missed approach at Jost, and headed over to Cane Garden Bay. The winds were strong as we came thru the pass in the reef, but as we got closer to the moorings in the lee of the mountain, it was near calm.

Problem is , if the N TO NE winds / swells wrap around or veer, to E or SE., Jost has unprotected anchorages . But, you can always enter and take a look . We did , and we left.

There were plenty of boats and cats, moored in Great Harbor, but all of them were pitching up and down, and rolling about , and lines yanking on their moorings.

plan B. We had a great time at Cane Garden Bay, snug on a calm mooring, and NO BLOODY CRUISE SHIPers, Lovely beach, and good times ashore.

Our traditional BVI sailing vacations are in May, mostly settled weather, , NE or SE winds 12 to 20 plus, with great sailing, double reefed, small jib . No engine required for the jeanneau 36i.

We are hoping this coming May, to get back to Jost. 1st Daimond Cay, and then the B-Line. Then, possibly Harris's Place in Little Harbor, or Great Harbor for Corsairs and or Foxy's, and walk over to White Bay.

But that is with the permission of the gods of wind and sea.

What is great about the BVI, we can always go to a plan B, and the fun times just continue .
