Car Rentals

Car Rentals - 01/28/2022 03:15 PM

Kind of a Tortola newbie. Thanks to everyone for the ton of information posted on this forum from you regular visitors to the island. A while back, six of us had an epic time bareboating May 2019 with BVI Yacht Charters for 10 days, but this time just the wife and I are renting a studio in Lambert Beach. Plan is to day trip from Trellis to North Sound, Anegada, and Jost. Itinerary: flying into STT and then taking the ferry over, arriving Road Town early afternoon. Can we get some recommendations on a car rental? I imagine they might be difficult to obtain, but what is the current situation? Pick up would be Wed. March 16, drop off March 23th. I guess close to the ferry dock is best?

Here is the standard car rental information we provide to guests:

Good Afternoon
Below are car rental recommendations for Tortola. You will find a variety of vehicles, prices and services which you can pick from to best meet your needs.
The below are located in West End and all provide pick up and drop off at the ferry docks and airport.
Jerry’s Car Rental:
Web Site: https://www.jerryscarrentalbvi.com/
Phone: 1-284-496-4111

Denzil Clyne Jeep Rental:
Web Site: http://denzilclynerentals.com/
Phone: 1-284-495-4900

If you something other than a local car rental, there is a National Car Rental at the airport and also one located at Maria’s by the Sea which is within walking distance from the Road Town ferry dock.
Web Site: https://www.nationalcar.com/en/car-rental/locations/vg/beef-island-tortola-airport-kv01.html
Airport Phone: 1-284-495-2626
Maria’s by the Sea: 1-284- 494-3197

If you find one of these does not meet your needs please provide me details on what you are looking for and I can provide other options.

Thank you, Jason. Renting from a local business appeals to us the most. We will definitely be catching a sunset at CGB one evening. Which day should we try?

There is music at the Elm on Friday and Sunday, Quito's on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, Myett's on Wednesday and Saturday, Paradise Club on Tuesday's. Any of those are good days.

On Monday, Quito's and Indigo House are closed so I'd pass on Monday.

When you talk to the car rental place, ask if they'll meet you at the ferry, or at your place on Lambert Beach. I forget the name of the place we used in November (might be able to find out if you need it), but they came to the TMM base to give me the car, and then told me what he wanted me to do with the keys so we could drive ourselves to the ferry and left the car there for him to pick up, and saved ourselves a taxi ride. Did the same thing a couple of years back when I needed a car for a couple of days. Incredibly handy, but you have to ask!

Good luck and have fun!

Seriously considering Jerry's for the car rental makes me wonder if there would be an advantage to clearing into Immigration at West End. What is the latest one might expect them to be still open?

I have had a strange week with my rental ( we are slowly trying to bring my VW Thing back from the dead post Irma and Covid). I have long used one rental company with few problems..this week I have gone through three rental cars..two broken fan belts and one flat fire which took three of us to change because there was no handle for the jack! I suggest giving your rental a good check before driving off or you could get stuck on a dark hilly road!!!

Thanks for that heads-up, Manpot. I guess hard-to-find replacement parts are being used for reactive repairs rather than preventative maintenance. Did you find vehicles hard to obtain otherwise?

The BVI does not allow foreign franchises, which is why you don't see Starbucks or McDonald's. So places like Avis, Hertz, etc. are local businesses using the reservation systems of those companies, in the same way Scrub uses the Marriott reservation system but isn't run by Marriott.

We have used National for years. The ladies recognize Ratman's voice when he calls, and they treat us very well. Their cars are well maintained. A bonus is being able to park at Maria's when in town!

Water Taxi is the only way to clear in West End. No ferry options.

Actually, as of now, Smith's Ferry will stop at West End on the 2:30pm ferry if they have at least a party of ten people or larger on board that have let them know in advance that they want to be let off at West End. This lets them get dock cleared of water taxis in advance of ferry arrival. I only know this as we have been in touch for our large party in June and they said they did this a week or so ago. Of course, anything can change in the future.

I'm renting from National/Alamo on this trip (trying to burn some points). Anyone know if their DAIHATSU TERIOS are 4WD?

Bump. Looking into car options myself for upcoming trip and this looks like the latest thread on the subject from my search.

What is your question?

Re: Car Rentals - 06/13/2023 11:48 AM

Are the Terios 4 wheel drive? Are they powerful enough for the hills with 4 passengers?

Asked Ratman and he can't recall which models have which features. I would call National and ask.

Thanks, will do. Also, I forgot to ask: does anyone know if the National office that used to be near WE is still there?

How did your trip go, Techie? Were you able to use free days with National/Alamo? I rent with National a fair amount for work and have a day or two, but have found that they won't let me use them in the BVI. Wondering if you might have found a work around?

Used Jerry's back in May.
Suzuki Grand Vitara ( automatic) at daily rate $72 inclusive of tax and insurance.
They met us at TMM with car when we returned our boat and then we left it at airport.
Car was a little worn but clean and the AC and brakes worked well.
We were staying at Coconut Breeze in CGB and we drove it up and over the top a couple of times.
Have fun.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of service I'm looking for. A reliable vehicle where I don't have to take a taxi to get or drop off the car. Appreciate your input.
