One day in Anegada

Posted By: JulieD

One day in Anegada - 05/10/2022 02:19 AM

We are going on our 3rd trip to the BVI in June, but we have never made it to Anegada. It will be my husband and myself, 2 college girls, and 2 16 year old boys. Would it be reasonable to rent a vehicle to explore, take a tour with Kelly or Sherwin, and have a nice lobster dinner all in one day? I feel like that’s a lot, but don’t want to miss anything either!

It very easy to do that. Leave the North Sound about 8 AM and you should be anchored by 10:30. Cars are available right in the small town at the anchorage. You can leave your dinghy at the Anegada reef hotel or Pottors.

You could do the Conch Island tour with Kelly in the morning (highly recommended --- bring your snorkeling gear), then rent a open air truck for the rest of the day. Not too much for one day, esp if your trip is short and you want to maximize the adventures. Have a great trip.

Isn’t the tour with Kelly or Sherwin a half day? If so that would be hard to do that and explore the island in one day if you arrive into the mooring field between 10 and 11. We typically stay two nights at Anegada (just exploring have never done the Kelly/Sherwin thing).

We have done Captain Kelly 5x and take college kids...MIDiver is correct that is a lot and if you snorkel with Kelly your crew will be tired. Bring noodles to snorkel with. I recommend the tour first thing then take a taxi to Cow Wreck Beach for Happy Hour and then end up at Potters or Wonky for late lobster dinner.

If you run late then skip Cow Wreck...

Skip the old Cow Wreck. Go to Ann's Tipsy, just to the east of old Cow Wreck. It is a much nicer place, lots of activities, especially for teens.

Consider staying for 2 days to make it easy.

I was assuming you were starting from Anegada in the morning. If you are starting from North Sound, I would get up early (6am) and do a sunrise sail there. Your teenagers may not be awake, but you will have a beautiful sail. Then have Kelly pick you up from the anchorage and do the tour. Back by noonish, and you are in your car/truck to sight see the island all afternoon.

One day is not enough with a Kelly/Sherwin tour. 2 days will give you a chance to see much more of the island. If you do a couple of days, besides Cow Wrek and Tippsy, check out Sid's. Sid is a great guy and the food is very good. The view from there is really good. Multiple great choices for dinner near the docks.

If you're doing a morning trip, Kelly and Sherwin usually like to get started at 9am.

For sure 1 day is a huge tease...

I have the same question as the OP….
What about this for a time line? Northsound to Anegada by 10-11am, drive/explore for the afternoon, lobster dinner in the eve., THEN next morning do a half day with Kelly to the conch island and bug outta the anchorage for Camanoe or Guana island before sunset…

Though as I type it, I hear myself having said before “I don’t want this next trip to be “rush-rush-rush” to the next anchorage”

Assuming you’re chartering, you’ve got to be moored or anchored before dusk. Getting back on board after a morning conch island tour and rushing to make it down to Guana or Great Camanoe in time sounds stressful to me, even if you succeed.

Skytrucker - We did exactly what you describe last week. The only difference is we went from Anegada to Little Jost, which is a bid further. We anchored right off B-line around 530 with enough time to enjoy a sundowner and game of cornhole.

It certainly can be done, but why rush your time on Anegada? Nothing better than waking up AND falling asleep over there

Re: One day in Anegada - 05/15/2022 02:10 AM

Good to know it can be done - Anegada to Jost seems farther than I’d like to push it, but I might try for guana or maybe as far as cane garden for the night-
I agree with the “why rush” ideas too though, with so many cool spots to stop, I feel the pull of the next anchorage, but I’m trying to temper that with the slow down, experience “island time”…
Probably end up playing by how we feel, day-of whether we leave or stay in Anegada, even if it means skipping something along the next way…..

Thanks for the input!

As a reference, my buddy and his girlfriend were just down and did Sherwin's Tour. They said it was absolutely the highlight of their trip and Sherwin was amazing. Great snorkeling, great tour guide and history and they loved the fresh conch ceviche with his secret blend
