You will arrive with Delta in Terminal B. Cape Air departs from Terminal D. It's about a 10 minute walk. You do not have to go back through security to change planes. Enjoy your trip.

Delta uses gates at Terminal B, at least in my experience. Yes, if you have checked bags, you will have to retrieve them off of the conveyor belt and then go back through security to get to Cape Air, which uses Terminal D (and it's a trek, let me tell you).

If you have Global Entry, you can hopefully avoid a long wait in the security line; under the best of circumstances you might get through in half an hour, but this is an extremely difficult thing to estimate so be prepared for it to take as long as an hour.

Going through that airport is always the worst part of my trip to VG. A tip about taking bags onto Cape Air - if you have checked bags from your departure airport that have stuff in them which might violate TASA carry-on regulations, you can check them at the Cape Air desk that is in the main terminal (i.e., before you pass through security), and while you can thereby avoid having to schlep it down to Terminal D, you'll get charged a fee for it.

Was that with separate tickets, Fitzhugh? I think they transfer the bags if both flights are on one ticket. It is a hike to the little planes, and you have to go down stairs and walk out to the plane.

Mrs. Ratman, yes, it was separate tickets. However, once when I used a Delta codeshare with Cape Air, I was still unable to check it through to Cape Air, so I had to undertake the dreaded retrieval of my bag off of the carousel (why do they use that nomenclature, which implies something that's fun?), take it up on the elevator and then check it at the Cape Air desk.

On another issue, it's been so long since I travelled through San Juan with only carry ons that I really could not recall if indeed one does not have to go back through security.

Carry on and checked baggage at CapeAir are basically the same thing. They are going to weigh and tag it at the gate. If the flight is full up with passengers it’s likely they will leave some bags behind but they will run a plane with just bags late in the day and deliver them to you.

that is good news, so even if our bags don't make it they will follow shortly. we get into virgin gorda late afternoon, so i guess it would be the next day since there are no lights at the airport and they could no land. this is stressful. we have always flown into st thomas on tues or thurs and taken speedy direct to virgin gorda. it was a big loss when they scaled this run down to saturdays only. as of now our plane is not full, so hopefully our bags will travel with us. we are so excited to return to virgin gorda. thanks everyone so much for all your information.

Baggage on a Cape Air connection works differently coming vs going.

San Juan to Tortola: Your do not do anything with your checked baggage. It will be transferred directly to your Cape Air flight. No need to go through security - you will remain inside the secure zone for the entire time.

Tortola to San Juan: You must pick up your baggage at customs baggage claim and walk it through US customs and Immigration, then take it to Delta to check it in. You will be outside the secure zone, and will have to go through TSA security to get to your departure gate.
