Pomato Point - 02/16/2024 05:06 AM

I have been many times to Anegada but never anchored at Pomato Point.
A couple of questions…..
What is Sid’s like for lobster ?
Can you arrange to rent a car here to get to Flash of Beauty etc.

Thanks
Bob

Sid's lobster is as good as anyone else's. The folks at Sid's can call for a rental car to be brought to you.

Make sure your charter company allows it. Most restrict Anegada to the main anchorage. Last time we ate at Syd’s the lobster was ok but would have been better if they let them grow up a bit!

Agree with George - check with your charter company before considering.

That said, the conditions have to be just right for anchoring to be safe and pleasant at Pomato. Any swell from N, NW, SW or S and/or winds from these directions and it gets very uncomfortable. And extremely hard if not dangerous to land a dinghy (be prepared to haul it up the sand incline a good ways no dinghy dock here). Swell will also wrap when from N and/or large from NE. You should be aware of condition forecasts within the next 24 hours as things can change quickly. As the locals say, the Atlantic can get angry - fast. We love it there when the winds/swell are light and from the E (typically in summer). It is a condition crap shoot in “season”.

The lobster at Sid’s is wonderful. We have always had BIG lobsters there - perhaps George ordered the kiddie meal? Smile. Really like the lobster tacos. and the ribs as well. They don’t rent cars there (and vehicles are in short supply) so you really need to rent one in advance and have it delivered there (hard to do if you don’t really know what conditions will be until day of arrival).

If you are allowed to proceed here by the charter company, and the conditions are right, follow cruising guide directions carefully for entry. Watch the reefs to either side. And station someone up front for lobster pot look out. There are a LOT of them in the area and you absolutely don’t want to foul one here.

Absolutely enjoyed several meals at Sid's last November. Great guy and a beautiful location.

I recommend Dean Wheatley (Sid's brother) for the rental. 284-495-9677 or dwjeep@hotmail.com

Chartered out of TMM last spring and anchored there. Left North Sound later with no need to rush to play the mooring ball game.

Reefs to the north and south of Sid's are clearly visible on the way in. Pick somewhere in-between an ease in toward shore.
Bottom comes up slowly so pick your depth and look for a sandy spot to drop.

We sent in an away team to scout out the beach. Beach in front of Sid's was very steep so we found easier access to the north.
Do pull dingy up a way and secure to avoid the occasional rouge wave!
Bring bug spray and let Sid take care of everything else.

We slid over to the mooring field the next morn before the conga line of boats arrived.

Enjoy!

We had the lobster with pasta last night at Sid’s and it was awesome! Great service and friendly atmosphere. We will be back soon for sure.

Thanks again to all for info on Sid’s. We enjoyed a great lobster dinner here. Anchorage was straightforward… we had good weather.
Only one other boat.

Probably my go to place next ti me in Anegada.

Cheers

I meant to say that the anchoring was very difficult. No way to land a dinghy, had to swim in !!
Not recommended at all !!

Cheers

The big thing to be aware of is that Pomato point is essentially unprotected. If there is any chance of Squalls or Thunderstorms in the forecast you don’t want to overnight. As I mentioned earlier in the thread most charter companies require the main anchorage be used.

Squalls, storms or just a good size north swell. A few years back we weren't paying attention to the swell forecast and woke up at 3 AM with the boat rocking badly. No one slept for the next 3 hours, when we finally had enough light to get underway.

I had the same experience in CGB once. Didn’t check swell forecast. Went to bed it was dead calm. Painfully rolled out of my berth at 2am. Miserable night!
