Cellular communication - 04/01/2024 11:33 AM

I just happened to spot this press release on the BVI government registry.

Dan cheers

The BVI Office of Telecommunications has awarded a contract to Ocean Connections Inc., to provide improved cellular communications for vessels traversing the area between Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Tortola. A total of six buoys will be installed in the area, each acting as a 5G base station for mobile service.

The buoys will communicate with each other and with land-based facilities via microwave relay links, and will be powered by a combination of solar arrays and electrical generation via wave action. This will allow each buoy to operate independently, with no need for fiber optic backhaul cables or electrical power interconnections across the ocean floor.

Construction and installation of the buoys and support facilities is expected to begin in October 2024, with scheduled completion in March 2025. For further information please contact the Office of Telecommunications at info@bvi-telecom.vg.

Wow, the one hour my cellphone would not work sailing to Anegada was a big factor in my decision to go or not! This will be amazing. I can stay glued to Tic-Toc the entire trip!
What will get the buoys first? Will it be hurricanes or boat collisions?

Edit: Bit that hook, line and sinker! 1 Apr!

I would not be surprised if it were true.
