Stolen Boat out of Cane garden Bay? - 04/17/2024 02:57 PM

Anyone hear about this?

Missing/Stolen yacht
From The Moorings Tortola, BVI, we have a missing 42' monohull named Sloop Dog, last seen last night in Cane Garden Bay. Possibly stolen. Do we have any captains or crew in Jost Van Dyke or elsewhere who could keep an eye out for it, please?

In all my years of going to the BVI I have not heard of this happening.

Stolen or not secured properly? A few years back a catamaran untied itself and drifted down to St Thomas from CGB.

I recall the last successful theft of a sailboat in the Caribbean was a charter boat that wasn't returned and the credentials used to charter the boat were subsequently found to be fake. That gave the thieves 2-3 weeks to disappear the yacht. I'm more in MIDiver's camp in thinking of another reason for a missing boat - who is going to flee at speeds around 10 miles-per-hour maximum over a distance of at least 100 miles (assuming SXM - the USVI patrols the waters pretty aggressively for incoming boats). If it had been stolen yesterday it would just be arriving here in St. Martin about now smile

I recall a private boat stolen out of the North Sounds of VG a few years ago. I think the owners left it unoccupied for a few weeks and then it disappeared. I'm not sure if that one was ever found.

In this day and age, why doesn't every charter boat have some sort of GPS tracker on it? You would think this would be standard equipment nowadays.

@Standrea - they do, many also have a broadcasting AIS signal.

Conch charters had a boat simply disappear once! The crew however came back in the dinghy with all their baggage. Claimed the boat simply sank and they had no time for a distress call. Owner had been trying to sell the boat for some time and was upside down on the loan. A friend of his was chartering. Despite the reported sinking spot being not deep the boat was never found. Conch even had a guy parasail the area on a dead calm day looking for the boat since it sank with sails up and should have been easy to spot. Never found!
If I were a betting man I would guess it was 2 miles further off past the south drop off when the “sinking” occurred!

They had time to gather all their luggage but no time for a distress call?? Nothing suspicious there!🤣

I know the crew and believe them when they say it was stolen. They were allowed to leave the BVI and the charter company was hospitable. I think if there was suspicion they may have been delayed a little bit longer. I'm disappointed at the complete lack of info out there on this. It would seem the powers that be are keeping it quiet.
