Economy in Puerto Rico

so how is everyone feeling about travelling in the near future to Puerto Rico with them maybe going bankcrupt?? How will this effect our stay there, gasoline, food & supplys for everyday use, even money???

it's not Greece. We are going to be in PR in January, never gave it a thought

PR isn't the only Caribbean destination close to bankruptcy. Unfortunately their are several more so if you are worried about it skip the Caribbean all together.

Beachboy2.....will never forget the caribbean forever...why that comment?...I had a very good concern & we are still planning on going, was just looking for some thoughts on Puerto Rico, why must people answer that way, if you don't have anything helpful to say to the inital question than don't comment at all

Prices theoretically may rise for mainland tourists buying goods and services primarily sold to tourists if increased taxes are part of a new austerity, but prices for local goods and services may fall if cuts in public employee wages and pensions also are part of new austerity. Overall, I think it unlikely that the situation (whether or not Congress lets PR go through a "bankruptcy" process) will have any appreciable negative effect on tourists such as us. If anyone wants to try to find an increased negative, it might be that if the island's economy really collapsed (which I doubt will happen), and people get really desperate, then crime could get worse. We really enjoy going to PR, specifically San Juan - usually to spend a few days before and/or after a cruise and the island's financial troubles in no way will deter us from going.

Lived in PR in the early sixties (I know, really dating myself), and have returned numerous times, as late as this last May with some first time visitors. Seems like PR has always been on the brink on some type financial disaster, but they are still going. I think I saw something about the US government saying they would not be "bailed out". that they needed to be more fiscally responsible. This, coming from our government that has gotten us into debt for trillions? LOL. Not wanting to start a political discussion, but I really don't think our folks in Washington will let Puerto Rico go down the tubes. But, with our new relationship with Cuba, if we don't come to the rescue of Puerto Rico, maybe Cuba will, with the bajillions of dollars we will probably end up giving them.

ok so now besides the economy & raised taxes being a concern, now there is a drought & the article I just read not sounding to good for water for showering or cooking or whatever...also said next 3 months will be affected
