Landing in St. Thomas March 7th. We have done this 4x now. It's been awhile , but I remember feeling ripped off by the vans that would take us on a 10 minute ride from the airport to the ferry. They would charge us per person and per bag , adding up to $50.00 a person. Does anyone have a suggestion or a reliable taxi driver for 4 people that I can contact.
That's actually about the going rate.
We use Wells, who hangs around Frenchtown and CYOA.
His number is 340-513-2722. He's very reliable.
I doubt you'll do better than $50 for 4 people with him though.
EDIT: Wells costs us somewhere around $10-$15 a head to go from the airport to the CYOA dock. The ferry dock is not all that far from CYOA, and probably roughly equal distance from the airport.
The original poster said $50 per PERSON. Not sure if that's what he meant, but that's what he said.
Yikes! Somehow I misread that! Added an edit.
We were there on 1/27 and took one of vans. We were charged 10 pp. -No charge for bags. (We gave a couple of bucks a bag).
I assume you are talking about the downtown "Charlotte Amalie " ferry. It's always around 11 or 12 $ pp with bags a short crowded trip. Now if in a hurry and want to take the van alone it cost us 85 one time. You can order a private taxi to be standing by but I believe the taxi association caused them to raise prices so it is a lot more for that service. Though seems a little chaotic unless you have a particular reason, I would go with the flow and take the "load em up" vans. They fill quickly and you are usually the first stop a few minutes later at the ferry building.
Yup, a few weeks ago we paid $12 (plus tip) per person including bags. As you say, the van filled quickly and the ferry terminal was the first stop.

Taxi Rates in USVI are regulated. There use to be a few illegal operators, but you did not see them around the airport.
Here is a line to the rates:
STT Taxi RatesScroll to the bottom for rates by location (To - From)
do the cab drivers own the cabs and get all the money or is there a taxi company that employs all the drivers?
The taxi business here is so very convoluted. There is a "taxi association" that is supposed to police all the taxis. There are separate organizations that have the right to pick up from the airport or the ferry dock. The owner of the cab is supposed to have a medallion, but they are available for sale and, more frequently, rent, from people who bought them when the Model A was the mode of transportation. And then there is the corruption...
And then there's the Port Authority sticking their nose in things, too.
I'm not quite sure I'm getting the cash flow of the cab business.
There are few people in the world who are getting the cash flow of the all cash taxi business. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cloud.gif" alt="" />
Just got back. I was charged $10 from the airport. Added a $2 tip. There was a pamphlet at the Road Town ferry terminal with rates published in it and it is supposed to be $7/each way. On the return trip I gave the driver $10. I didn't ask for change and he said "Thank you".
still have to go with Kevin Campbell 340-643-0025 If he can't make it work, he will give you an alternative
