Hike from Leinster Bay to Coral Bay

Hike from Leinster Bay to Coral Bay - 02/14/2021 10:37 PM

Has anyone hiked from Leinster Bay to Coral Bay?

Route should be Leinster bay trail (1.9 RT) to Johnny Horn (2.7 RT) .

How long did it take? Was it exposed/shaded?

I'd like to take some young children and adults on this trail to have lunch in Coral bay, but this may be wishful thinking.

I have read a few trail reports, one noted how steep the trail was near Coral Bay, and I read a few reports from a while back that mentioned the trail was overgrown some.

Any info. is appreciated.

We've done it several times. It takes about an hour and is mostly shaded. It can get slippery if there's been rain. We took a group in January 2020 - most enjoyed it but it was a bit much for our son's GF so fortunately we were able to find a cab to take us back to Annaberg. We've stayed in Coral Bay too late a few times and had to hike back in the dark, which is okay if you are adventurous and have flashlights.

I love it but it's a challenging hike!

It's a fun hike. The part from the top of the mountain down to Coral Bay is actually a road and there are houses along the way. If you like steep hikes you'll like this trail. The trailbandit.org map is the best one to reference.

We did this hike this morning. Volunteers have done a nice job of trimming back the undergrowth. Some sections are very steep. Not really suitable for younger kids I dont think. Yours might be exceptionally tough but I know my 6 and 7 year old grandkids would not have made it. We had a great lunch at skinny legs but hiking back after a big cheeseburger and a couple beers adds to the challenge. From the back end of the bay it took us right at an hour each way.

Thank you all very much.

Knotthead - How crowded was Leinster this AM, and in general around the USVIs?

Leinster filled up by mid afternoon. Francis bay usually has balls available, Salt pond bay fills pretty early. Lameshur bay has balls later in the afternoon. Caneel seems to fill up around early afternoon. We havent had any real problems. I think with the sustained strong trade winds many people are settling in early. Very strong east winds this week. Plenty of places to anchor in Round Bay near Coral. Brewers bay down by the STT airport was beautiful for a couple nights.

So the north shore bays were OK with the easterly winds? Weren’t rolly?
Wave, swell, and periods look great on Windy with ~20 knot winds

Heading down soon and watching the weather hourly! 😀

Currently in Leinster Bay. It's fine, just gusty wind. Same with Maho/Francis and Caneel. Hawksnest was very protected from the wind,, but the easterly swell (plus passing wakes from all the day boats) wraps into the bay catching you sideways. No north swell.

Leinster was full at 2 pm yesterday. Couple balls opened in late afternoon.. At 1 pm today there are 6 open moorings plus 12 boats on moorings.

Try to get to Salt Pond between 9~9:30. Saturday it was wide open as it's a turnaround for lots of charters. Yesterday morning Little Lamehur had 2 boats (3 empty moorings) and Great Lameshur had about 9 boats.
