Sloop Jones

Sloop Jones - 03/10/2014 03:14 PM

Sloop Jones has a nice shop on the east end of St. John past Vie's snack shack. I bought a t-shirt there for $68. I feel totally pimped and abused. I should have listened to Macklemore and gone to the thrift shop. But I paid it anyway and I look really good in the Coral Bay area.

I don't understand. I try to go to Sloop Jones every St. John vacation. It seems they aren't selling as much lately. Where else can you find their clothing?

To the O.P. A friend introduced us to Sloop Jones last Fall when we visited St. John for the first time as land based visitors. Friend had purchased there in past and vouched for the long lasting quality and hand made aspects. Sloop Jones' work is really "Art" that you wear, not just a tee shirt. You did not get "had" you got art. Wear it proudly.

P.S. My first name begins with a "B" and last with a "Z" so I am not a member of the Jones family.

Last time I was in St. John I picked up a t-shirt at Sloop Jones. My wife, however, purchased a lot more, including some gifts for folks back home. Yes it is artwork you wear. I was having sticker shock at the price of a t-shirt, though.

I for one, see it differently. It's amazing how much you will spend, at say, an island gift shop. Perhaps a necklace, or a bracelet. You'll pay a couple hundred bucks, maybe less, maybe more. And it's a fine looking piece of jewelry !! You will tell yourself......this will remind me of my trip to St. John !! But it's a piece of jewelry that was made somewhere else, by someone else, and it really has no value to it. It has a pretty stone of some sort, not precious to where it has a real value that will be worth something someday. And eventually it ends up with the rest of your jewelry, in a drawer, or a box, or a nice little nic-nac shelf. But you were on vacation so spending that kind of money at a store that had a storefront with windows and lights made some kind of self-justification.

I would rather go out on the island, and see what the locals are making. In this case, we go out to Sloop Jones. And while we are looking over his shirts, dresses, tops, and signs, we notice that he has a family. And his family is pitching in to help create a memory. So I buy it, I take it home and hang it in my closet with the rest of my island wear. And whenever I thumb through my warm day attire, I come across my Sloop Jones shirt, and instantly....... a flashback of Jeeping around St. John !!Snorkeling at Trunk Bay, conch fritters at Vie's Snack Shack, and meeting Sloop Jones and supporting a local economy.

If I want sticker shock, i'll look at the price of my airfare and ask myself..... " Are peanuts, pretzles and pop really THAT expensive ?? "

I have 10 year old Sloop Ts that I still wear regularly. I was walking through the Prague airport and a local stopped me, she had on her Sloop T on too.

I also have kids' items that have been through a couple of kids, They wore well and are packed away for GrandKids.

When I downsize to two suitcases and move to the islands, my Sloop Ts come with me.

Cheers, RickG

I have a tshirt which is actually linen (bonus points for being made in the USA) I bought prior to my son being conceived so that makes it over 9 years old. My husband thinks it it getting washed out. I think it is just getting good.

Sadly I only have one child so when he grew out of his Sloop stuff, I out it in the Goodwill box.
