Is the Carrefour that had the fire back open. If not when do they think it will open.
Not open. They said 60 days, about 60 days ago.
I don't think it's been 60 days yet, as the fire happened a couple of days before we left and we left on June 25
Thought I read somewhere, September.
Thought I read somewhere, September.
I believe you read about Cost U Less.
I thought Cost U Less had been open all along, but that they had had no refrigerated section?
Cost U Less announced yesterday they will be fully functional September 1st
OK, regarding Cost U Less. We never shopped there a lot, but it's nice to have another option again. And I'm sure it seems like forever for Carrefour to be non-operational, when it was your primary grocery. 60 days from when that fire happened seems like an awfully ambitious timeline to begin with.
Super U has long ago become our primary grocery store. Nor did we use Cost U More often as we don't have room to store bulk purchases. Do miss the Carrefour/GM smoked pork chops!
We will be on Island first 2 weeks of October. Loved Carrefour next to Mark’s. Where is Super U located?
In Marigot by the gas station.
Funny--I would have said, "in Marigot, by the Mcdonalds"!!!
Elaine--OK, sorry, I thought you had said before that Carrefour was your major market, but I definitely do get why Super U would be your number 1. Over the past couple of years, we've gone to Super U more times than Carrefour (or Grand Marche before), but sometimes there are things that Super U doesn't have, like American brands..
I do get some things at Carrefour like my paper goods because I do like my brands with that sort of thing. I go to Market Garden for my milk (special brand) and cheap chicken legs! When people ask where do I shop, the reply is "depends on what I'm shopping for!" And we have two Carrefour express' just here for running out for quick stuff. Got lovely garlic (hard to find here), fresh rosemary and thyme there this morning. Lamb shank for dinner!
Lamb shank sounds good! What time is dinner??
we do alot of shopping at sunny, being on island for months we go to different places for different thing. sometime we go to daily extra right on airport road for small things. We have gone to cost us less, but only for steaks, as they were good and tender. we actually will not miss carrefour but have been there as well. we think sunny has some great products... but again being there for a week as apposed to monthes we have to really shop around... We have been on Island for short periods and just get basics but when it comes to shopping? must shop here and there for different items... Sure if someone is there for just a week or two not alot of cooking or needs...
Super U is our choice too but it's very crowded on weekends . Perhaps because lots of locals shop there and probably work weekdays. As to location it's in the Howell Center and I would have said---just past the athletic field if coming from airport area or Cole Bay.
Past Athletic field on the right hand side. Other nice stores in that Howell Center.
It's next door to a GIANT McDonalds.
Yup, that's what I said.
Any word if this store has reopened? The Carrefour website seems to imply they are open.
The Carrefour website looks not to be updated since Irma, as it also lists the store in Cole Bay.
As of last Saturday when we drove by on the way to the airport they were not open.
The only Carrefour stores open are the two express markets in Cupecoy
Thanks for the responses. We leave for SXM in 2 weeks and was hoping to check the store out for our provisions. Their website makes it appear that the store is open and I was just looking for confirmation. Looks like we'll have to go elsewhere.
Not sure where you're staying, but do check out the Super U. It's a nice store! Just no US brands. Also, check out the store that has reopened in the spot where Fresh Market used to be. They looked to have lots of US brands.
Carol - Is Fresh Market the one that was at the corner of Welfare and Billy Folly (by The Atrium)?
No , that is Market Garden and it is still open. Fresh Market was just outside Phillipsburg on your way to Orient Beach.
Oh, I'm glad to hear that there's still a market there. I imagine it's changed but it should be a good 'first stop' after arrival.
We're staying in a VRBO condo on Pelican. This is our 1st time on the island so I'm not familiar with areas but that Carrefour looked like a standard US supermarket (Publix here in FL) and google maps showed it as not too far away.
deputy--unless you're cooking a lot, Market Garden is right there close to Pelican and it will suffice for what you need. It will be closer than Carrefour anyway. They have US products there. It's not Publix, but it will do!
Cost-U-Less reopens early in Sept (recently announced). Nothing yet about Carrefour.
Thanks for that. Cooking? Don't really know but snacks, possibly a few breakfasts. Just figuring out what is nearby. Good that there is Us products, not because I think they're better but I don't speak or read a lick of Dutch and/or French, LOL!
deputy, I shopped at the French super market in Hope Estates, near Cul de Sac, last trip and couldn't figure out how to buy a box of crackers! LOL
what about shopndrop, a sponsor here? Jeannie takes your order online and arranges delivery so you have a stocked place upon arrival.
