curacao converters?credit cards?

curacao converters?credit cards? - 02/24/2018 01:33 AM

Couple of questions, because trip time is close!
#1-electric- do we need converters for our electric stuff?
#2-credit cards for payment-on SXM because dollars are accepted there is no charge for currency conversion when we use our credit cards. Is this the same for Curacao? We have heard that they will take dollars and pay you back in guilders but not sure if the charge in dollars or guilders?

Thanks in advance!

#1 - We didn't need converters at The Natural, but that is our only experience there.
#2 - Depends on your card. No fee with Capitol One. Dollars accepted everywhere we went, change usually in Guilders. Conversion rate is essentially at the whim of the vendor.

#1 - we did not need converters because our phones and iPads run on either 110 or 220, so that depends upon your personal electronics. Usually it tells you on the plug what it will accept. We did need to use adapters for the plugs.

#2 - conversion rates depend on your bank. We also use Capital One and did not have any conversion fees, so that depends upon your personal credit card. US dollars are widely accepted in Curacao, though change can be given in either US dollars or guilders. It was never a big deal to us though. We actually found having a few guilders was good for thing like parking meters downtown or beach bathrooms.

gitter, A little off the topic but you say you are heading down soon. Check TripAdvisor's Curacao forum, there are a few new trip reports from some that are very positive and ideas on where to go once there. I am sure you will like Curacao. Hope you can write a report when you return. Have a safe trip!!

Yes, excellent point. Also small food vendors may have trouble with $ so carrying local is useful. I wouldn't bother converting, just keep and carry what you receive back from others.

There is a lot to like about Curacao, have fun!
